Irrational Passions: PSP2 Thoughts/Hopes

Today, January 27th 2011, Sony announced their next handheld console: the NGP (Next Generation Portable). Yeah, we know its dumb, but its just a code name. This IS the long-awaited PSP2, which is hitting sometime holiday this year... in Japan at the very least. There are quite a few details out there about the system, and here are some of them.

I find it funny how that one guy said Sony doesn't know what to give consumers just because the PSP 2 is a multimedia device.. are you kidding? Why is it that the majority of people buy devices like androids or iphones and all that jazz? because they love to have multimedia devices! PSP 2 is no exception.. very very excited for it!

Nicely said. Its funny to because the next guy talked about how sony gave the fans what they wanted... which means they filled everything weve ever dreamed of.

Exactly! Either way I am super excited about the system.. it is a very sexy piece of tech.. the only thing we need to know now is the price.. my guess is $250-300

If they have learned anything from the ps3 its pricing. Hopefully. They also said affordable for a handheld. Handhelds have never been more than consoles (dont include wii) and the ps3 is about 300-400. Hopefully they make it less than that. 350 max

"Joseph Fait [Co-Host of Podcast, Write for site]:
So NGP…. Does this have any profound impact on the industry? Simply put, no. From all the specs I’ve seen the handheld is indeed impressive, but it shows a trend of Sony not knowing what to give the consumer, at least here in the west. Sony is striving to be the luxury car of the console and handheld market, and by all means they’re doing a great job at it. The thing here is that people in the West don’t exactly want that. Keep in mind I’m speaking from a broad perspective. Almost every console generation the weaker console wins, and this is true with the PSP vs DS (hardware sales).

I honestly have no clue why Sony is trying to pitch the idea of great tech being for everyone, and unless they can have the price competitive to the 3DS it won’t be."

Hes literally saying that people dont want great tech that they will choose the weakest console over the more powerful one. That is complete BS the reason why the DS outsold the PSP by a lot was because of price and fanbase. Not because of tech i bet if the PSP was released at 50€ less than the DS it would have sold way more. If the NGP is priced similarly to the 3DS then Nintendo could loose some marketshare.

Hey guys, I was just saying that history has proved the weaker consoles almost always sell less.

Great tech is awesome, but the masses don't care about it.
