Norway: Sony's PS3 "updates" actually downgrade system

Norway's Consumer Council, an independent government agency, has received multiple complaints from PlayStation 3 owners over the removal of the "Other OS" functionality of the console. It has now taken the complaint to Norway's Consumer Ombudsman, with the Council claiming that Sony breached the Norwegian Marketing Control Act by removing a key feature after sale.

It was removed thanks to the hackers.

kaveti66162460d ago

Maybe if Sony put it in a little more effort they could have created firmware updates that would have strengthened the security of the system without removing features.

How many years did these hackers try to hack the PS3? How much time and effort did they put in?

And at the first sign of trouble Sony immediately removed a feature? They didn't even try to patch the security?

IMO, Sony was being very cautious, so they got a little lazy.

ComboBreaker2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

Sony spent so much time proof-hacking the PS3 and fighting hackers that Sony didn't have any time to create Cross Game Chat and other gaming features that us loyal gamers truly deserve.

It's all the hackers fault. Everything they do, it falls back onto us. They pirate. We and developers suffer. They hack. We and developers suffer. They're scums and deseve to be prison, where bullies will show them how their hacking skills are no match for bullies' shanking skills.

Anyway, just look at how much time and effort were put to making sure the PS3 was unhackale. And it remain unhackable for so long.

Sony also doesn't have unlimited resources and time, unlike hackers who can spent 24 hours a day hacking away in their basement for years and years straight.

Mad that Sony took away the OtherOS feature?
Well, you should thank the hackers for that.

dragonelite2460d ago

Hacker hack not pirate.
Pirates pirate.

With that kind of logic i could also say boats pirate the internet pirates. Heck microsoft amd, intel and other computer parts manufactors pirate because they help pirates to do there thing.

Tommykrem2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

Sony can't create security meassures against other OS, as whatever "other" OS people install will (most likely) not be made by Sony. So they removed it. Which is a shame.

They can of course update the PS3s system security... hmmm... Bugger if I know really. I just don't want to download more firmware updates that only improve security.

@Dragonelite
That's a bit simple. Action - consequence. Seriously, there's not THAT much else to do with a hacked PS3 than play pirated or unlicensed games. People who have a cracked console are probably 90% likely to get pirated games.

Active Reload2460d ago

Just buy a used PS3 and hack away...

nycredude2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

Are we still talking about this? When did this happen?

gypsygib2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

I agree with 'ComboBreaker' - the money spent on defending against thieving pirates means legitimate users get less resources spent on them.

Just look at 360 DVDs, there maxed out at a paltry 6.6 gigs due to security measures.

Companies spend hundreds of millions fighting those pirating vermin, that money could be spent on making better gaming experiences

ComboBreaker2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

"Hacker hack not pirate.
Pirates pirate."

Pirates can't pirates by themselves. Pirates rely on hackers to hack so pirates can pirate.

"With that kind of logic I could also say boats pirate the internet pirates."

That is some very bad logic you have there.

Government let you have gun. You want to abuse the gun and let criminal to use it to kill? Goverment gonna take away your gun. And you're gonna be put away for a very long time.

Sony give OtherOS to hacker to play around with. Hacker want to abuse it and open the gate for piracy usage? Sony gonna take away OtherOS and hackers are going to be put away for a very long time.

Very simple and easy to follow logic.

Commander_TK2460d ago

Hahaha. Lol, det er alt for sent. Hvor har de vært i det siste året?

gamingdroid2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

The difference is the Government punishes the guy that uses the gun illegally, while Sony punishes everyone including the innocent bystanders like me!

How about we ban video games (and put you away for a long time), because somebody played Killzone 2, went haywire and killed a bunch of people.

TotalPS3Fanboy2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

"How about we ban video games and put you away for a long time because somebody played Killzone 2 and killed a bunch of people."

Your logic is nonsensical.

This is more sensical...

You play Killzone.
You kill peoples.
You get jailtime.

You play Killzone.
Somebody plays Killzone.
Somebody kills people.
Somebody get jailtime.
But you don't get jailtime because you didn't kill peoples.

You hack the PS3.
You don't gives the key to pirates.
You don't get jail time.
Pirates get keys from somewhere else.
Pirates get jailtime.

You hack the PS3.
You gives out the key to pirates so they can steal games.
You get jailtime.
Pirates, if caught, get jailtime too.

Very simple to understand.

BattleAxe2459d ago

Norway should just stay out of this.

gamingdroid2459d ago (Edited 2459d ago )

That is my point!

You don't go after the people didn't do anything illegal, yet that is what Sony did by removing OtherOS.

I was simply responding to this posted by ComboBreaker:

"Sony give OtherOS to hacker to play around with. Hacker want to abuse it and open the gate for piracy usage? Sony gonna take away OtherOS and hackers are going to be put away for a very long time."

ComboBreaker is fine with punishing innocent people like me, that don't have anything to do with the piracy community yet lost OtherOS functionality i.e. Sony removed it for everyone including pirates and innocent people.

The "OtherOS" was NOT a key feature. No where was it advertised;
Here the back of my PS3 box brought Pre-OtherOS removal.
http://i54.tinypic.com/2610...

This case has been done before and Sony won that case because Sony had proven all those whinging where just doing so to gain some attention. End of.

dragonelite2460d ago

It's a feature and if it was taken away you should feel mad. Would be like Ford taking away your turbo because your car goes faster and people can get hurt by it.

Dont get me wrong im a bystander for hacking a console and run homebrew but im against pirating because im planning on going in the industry later and if ms and sony are smart just put Linux on your consoles next gen or let them run homebrew heck microsoft was already doing it well with XNA.

Oxymoron0282460d ago

It wasn't advertised, so why should I be angry that it was removed?

I mean I did buy my PS3 to play games... Wait, you lot do know that's what a PS3 is for right?

SixZeroFour2460d ago

OXY...nothing is for a single purpose anymore, gaming consoles this gen were always about the whole package. streaming music/movies, web browsers, bluray player etc. they arent just solely for gaming anymore...same with ipod, its not just for music anymore, you have the apps, videos, pictures

Oxymoron0282460d ago

MrAnonymous:

It is sold as a games console, anything else it can do is just an extra. Complaining that an extra is removed because it poses a sercurity risk is just stupid.

Secondly, Sony already won this law suit back in 2010... doing it again wont change that.

SixZeroFour2459d ago

true, its sold as gaming console first, but they do also market those extras as well...like backwards compatibility, and the numerous memory card slots in the original ps3 and even blu ray was a selling point for ps3, and then they started making models without the extra memory card slots and took away backwards compatibility...are you saying, they shouldnt be complaining about that? fact of the matter is, this isnt the first firmware that took away a feature

gamingdroid2460d ago (Edited 2460d ago )

It was removed thanks to Sony. Sony has the power to remove it, not the hackers!

That's like blaming the gun for murder, when it is the person that does the killing!!!

Because something can be used for illegal purposes, doesn't mean you should ban it. You should punish those doing illegal activities.

kewlkat0072460d ago

I think it was removed pre-maturely because Sony got scared. They pretty much screwed themselves when they did that. The other OS feature was there but not many even used it. When it was taken out it seemed to angered the hacking community.

Then again, some have the right to be upset if they bought the ps3 based on the fact it had the otherOS feature.

It's seems like they live in a cave or something. They have no clue WTF is a going on.

vegnadragon2460d ago

They removed that a few years ago.

gypsygib2460d ago

People care that much to have Linux on there frickin PS3. What they don't have computers1? All this does is give companies incentive to give consumers less features. Why give more than the barebones if companies are held liable for taking aways things that they later discover poses a security threat or is unprofitable. If sony takes away Home are people going to sue them.
