Dead Space 2′s creative director Wright Bagwell (who has an amazing name) has revealed that the developers chose to turn down the scare-o-meter for sections of Dead Space 2, after players of the first game found it to be too constantly intense.
Less scary? Man. I wish I could tell.
Here is Dead Spaces way of being 'scary'. Walk down corridor, enemy jumps out, kill enemy,, walk 10 metres, an enemy jumps out, kill enemy, repeat 4 times. Turn corner, enemy jumps out, kill enemy, repeat 5 times. It isn't scary when its so predictable. If you guys think DS is scary, harden up!
Depends on person, but that's the reason I stopped playing Dead Space after few hours. Stopped being scary once you realise the scaryness comes from surprise.
What scared me most was the sound. Like that bit in the elevator when your hear the woman scream, and your wondering if your going crazy or its someone screaming. Then you get to the top and there's that dead person that limps off around the corner, and the whispering voice 'make us whole again'... That's the kind of shit that scared me.
@Tachyon_Nova Or you could not be a jackass and like so many other who watch movies, read books or play games FU<KING USE YOUR IMAGINATION AND EMPATHISE!!!!!!!!!!!! That's when the games are actually enjoyable, and yes dead space was scary. Back to COD for you now, I get the impression you don't like to think a lot.
You forgot these parts. *Walk through dark as fvck place, sudden loud static noise from television turning on in front of player, scares sh!t out of player* *Walks down corrider, Isaac enters hallucination and sudden unexpected noise makes player jump.* Also I really dislike this whole "developers chose to turn down the scare-o-meter for sections of Dead Space 2, after players of the first game found it to be too constantly intense." quote. That's what made the first great. I've only played about the first 15 minutes of DS2 to check it out cause I want to finish Extraction first but I do feel the whole, Dead Space 1 was ALIEN and Dead Space 2 is ALIENS (cos faster pace) thing going on, especially the whole running to safety bit when the game starts.
well that sucks. Especially since I didn't think the first dead space was scary. I have to keep reminding myself that I am "old" now and when I was in high school I was playing much scarier games like Silent Hill and the First Resident Evil games. The people who think dead space is scarier must be the younger generation that doesn't know any better.
Honestly, the first Silent Hill was a completely new experience for video games for me. I remember the first time I walked through the fog/ash in the city and you couldn't see anything... and then the weird noises off in the distance. If you want to be scared or at least put on edge, play Amnesia: The Dark Descent on the PC. That has many moments where I was truly full of trepidation and on edge.
The early Resident Evil games aren't all that scary. Hell, when i was playing RE3 it was using those pop-out boo shock tactics some people complain about in Dead Space. At least Dead Space throughs in a bit of psychological horror. I'll agree with Silent Hill being superior in the scare factor though.
I think u are mistaken Visceral this time by making it less scary.
scary or not i love this game
The only games I've found scary from all the time I've played videogames are RE1-3, Silent Hill 1 and Fear 1.
Man I remember playing Silent Hill in the dark by myself. That game was twisted. I miss those days. Dead Space 1 and 2 are far more gory but not half as scary. Fatal Frame was another good one.
Yeah man, the only game I have played in the past couple of years that was scary or creepy was the Pnenumbra games and Amnesia: Dark Decent. If you like horror games try those.
Yea fear scared me because of the girl alma. Monsters and zombies arnt scary to me but supernatural sh** like demons and ghosts scare me, creepy sounds that build up to something. Dead space was more of a panicky gam to me trying to run or shoot everything before thy got you.
Idk Visceral. I'm only on chapter 3 and i've screamed "OH SHIT!" atleast 10 times lol
why do i get the feeling....... you scream oh shit more out of surprise... than actually being scared
I'm on Ch 8 and I actually do find it less scary, but that's because I prepared for it. Dead Space 2 is still an AMAZING SEQUEL!
I hope Dead Space 3 won't get the RE5 treatment
Eh? I wasn't even scared in Dead Space 1. (Great game though, loved it; just no fear factor for me.) So it's disappointing to hear it's even less scary now. I guess I'm just totally desensitised. (<Yes, that's British English spelling, deal with it.)
Interesting then that the reviews seem to say the Dead Space 2 is as scary, if not scarier than the first game? I don't mind. A lot of the time I'd find myself only playing in short bursts or even too scared to play the first game. Though I did find the first 4 chapters to be much scarier than the rest of the game...
A WARNING TO ALL: There are several trolls on YouTube who are spoiling the ending to the game. Seeing as how history often repeats itself, spoiler trolls will inevitably make their way here. It's probably in your best interest to avoid the comment areas until you've completed single player.
Dead Space 2 is more faster because was "necessary" to put the online mode. But if you make it faster and more action instead of survival horror then it is obvious it gets less scary.
Less scary? hell I had to clean my room up for a week after playing the demo.
the gameplay didn't scare me in deadspace it was the sound. play dead space with no sound on i feel relaxed. The first game wasn't really scary but it did make you feel like you had to be alert all the time.
dead space was never scary to me just was full of action/gore :)
thats sad because the first deadspace wasnt scary at all, i started game on hard and it was WAY to easy, how can a game be scary if its easy?? barley died and the bosses were AWFUL. and DS2 seems fun since the melee actually works but still i know it wont be scary cuz the demo isnt scary and now we have this "intentionally less scary" people are scared because they are supposed to be afraid? wtf? makes no sense, its a game first off lol, i dont see anyone scared when they get sniped in cod so how the F is a monster without weapons supposed to do? haha retarded
Shouldn't they concentrate on pleasing the people who found the first game's intensity just right rather than apease those who didn't?
Never got scared with the first, it was more predictable then scary. Dead Space 2 has a lot more jump moments though with the sound design and the Stalker enemies are a blast to fight against. The tension feels greater during these parts and better over the first game.
Ugh the article doesn't say anything like that. Please read the article! All it says is it changes the method of scare tactics. DS1 was predictable because you knew every time there was a corridor there would be an enemy, in DS2 that is not the case. It makes people not always be on their toes and than BAAAMM scare em when they least expect it.
Looking forward to an element of surprise for a change!
I assumed so. They seem to have added more general "sci-fi" stuff and brought the "horror" down a bit...probably because the first game wasn't scary. Either that or they are saying it was intentional because nobody thinks the second one is scary.
