Greg Miller's response to criticism of his Dead Space 2 Review

Greg Miller has been verbally shot up at Reddit.com for his Dead Space 2 review that people are calling out as something "a middle school kid reviewed". To counter, Greg has posted on his blog that this was the first time he's heard of Reddit and that after reading through the comments, he's pissed. Of course, that hasn't prevented one user from providing a witty response.

Well,the whole thing came out of a reddit thread, so check that out if you want to see what's wrong with it. Won't link you, you can find it, I think. Pretty much they said it was as if a middle schooler wrote it.

As I stated elsewhere, it is one thing for you and I to write free form on boards and sites such as this but a review from a prominent site such as IGN should carry with it a degree of professionalism. Such professionalism should entail a modicum of grammatical correctness. Instead we are treated to disjointed sentences, run on writing, and the punctuation of an ADD affected 10 year old.

I'm not sure what was 'wrong' with it, but there wasn't a lot right with it. The whole thing was more of a story of his experience than a review of the game and its aspects.

See, there was once Digg. Reddit came along and ate them up.
Basically it's like a huge news aggregator with like a toned down version of 4chan merged in for good measure. There's a huge amount of Subcategories or SubReddits that deal with every topic imaginable.

Its a toolbar you install that lets sites know when you've accessed them, it then gathers this data up and ranks the sites in order, also it gives you information on the sites. It also allows sites to pay them to display their ads in your browser.

Personally I class it as spyware and wouldn't let that sh*t near my PC

IGN = Garbage. They consistently low ball their scores for hits. The reviews are total bullshit. I won't even give the site a hit.

This rabid IGN hate is ridiculous. There is nothing wrong with the review. Sure, there are some grammatical decisions I would have approached differently, but really? The guy is not writing a dissertation, it is a short review for a gaming (predominately) website. Most of the criticism people have are poorly argued and really the people complaining simply need to learn how to read. If IGN made a mistake or did something, then fine, bash them. But there is nothing wrong here.

I agree, it's a review for a video game. As a consumer and video game enthusiast I'm much more interested in his experience with the game rather than his grammatical errors. People find anything to complain about nowadays. Hell, I'd care less if the review was written in texting language.

Being a grammar nazi is something I will never be. The second someone attacks one's grammar, when that is not the primary issue, is the second they've lost the said argument.

The only case I can think where grammar would be an issue to attack is when you really, truly, absolutely, cannot understand what someone is trying to say. But that is very rare.

I think you're all full of it.IGN are a good bunch of game loving guys.You might not always agree with them(I don't)but reviews are always subjective.
Listening to the podcasts(and many others),I think IGN have greater transparency than most sites and seem to have some balance with PS3 these days.The Beyond crew are still the most entertaining podcast(Scoop good also)and they wear their hearts on their sleeves.
There's a lot more bullshit from sites on here than IGN,but then being the biggest always gets you undeserved criticism.Look at Playstation.

I want to hear about the actual game. The sound effects, music, graphics, gameplay, etc. Are there many bugs? Describe the multiplayer.

I don't care how "pimped out" the weapons are or if he was sitting on a couch with his heart. I care about the quality of the game and that's what I read reviews for. Half of his review was just him talking about himself and how much HE liked it, but never does he mention any details about WHY he liked it. He just liked it! I guess that's all we need to know...

I don't think he even played DS1 or DS2.
Most of his "review" was just a Wikipedia summary of the first game.

Regardless, my copy of DS2 should arrive in the mail any minute now. :)

He definitely played DS2, if you actually believe he didn't something may be wrong with you. And stop pointing out "grammatical errors" people from reddit first addressed. The author is clearly trying to be relevant with his context. To say something is "pimped out" may not be appropriate for a professional piece, but for a gaming article, you better believe it is appropriate.

If you can't, from context, figure out what he is trying to say, you need more lessons is reading, and less in critiquing someone's grammar. It may not be the best way to creatively describe something, but to be confused by what he is saying? Please...

I didn't point out a single grammatical error in my comment... If he actually played the game, that makes his "review" even worse because he fails to mention any of the details of the game other than a giant plot summary. Like I said, where does he comment on the multiplayer? Where does he discuss the musical score? Etc. If I wanted a plot summary, I would have read the game box. I want INFORMATION.

I wasn't confused by what he was saying. It was just improperly worded, which isn't okay. This is his CAREER to write professional reviews. It's okay to goof off a little in the video reviews, I'm all for some humor. But this is just very poor writing.

The game is incredible, though. Happy gaming.
