Is Microsoft Pissing Off Japanese Game Makers?

In the West, Microsoft is king. Well, queen. In Japan, it's not — not by a country mile. The software giant needs every ally it can find. But even its most ardent supporters seem restless.

Tokyo-based arcade developer Cave brought a handful of its shoot'em up games to the Xbox 360 instead of the PS3, helping carve out a home-grown niche for Japanese players. Until Japanese developers like Cave got on board, the general perception among Japanese players was that the Xbox 360 was populated only with games foreigners like to play.

m$ need to get out of japan altogether peace out ?

In the West, Microsoft is king ?
USA + UK = WEST ???? I need to go back to school then .

ChristianGamer2520d ago (Edited 2520d ago )

Agreed, you should go back to school. Microsoft have North America, South America and UK, if that isn't most of the west on lockdown then I do not know what is. On top of that they have the Australian continent. They do not need Japan at this point. They should just focus on their strong points and for the love of all that is good announce core exclusives. This Kinect focus is starting to scare me, I gotta be honest. Forza 4, yes sequel to the greatest racing game this gen, and Gears 3 are not enough. Kingdoms is one huge tease, dunno when its coming out!
Rare needs to come out of its casual games phase. Lion's Head need a new IP!

@ ChristmasGamer
NO NO.. I think you shoulld stay in high school now, even moreso if you think Austrailia and UK are in the west. Just sayn but I went to school in Bahrain (If you can manage to find that) so I might be wrong. Someone here can correct me.

You can't blame Microsoft for not trying. They had quite a few exclusive jpgs early on, but the japanese market just didn't want the x360 (maybe it was the RROD or because it was an american company). After some tries Microsoft just gave up on the japanese market.

With the launch of Kinect, Microsoft seems like they are trying to relaunch the x360 with some japanese games being developed for it.

InTheKnow2520d ago

M$ spent a boatload of money on the Japanese market with really nothing to show for it. I think M$ has learned ( the expensive hard way ) there lesson but who knows. Nobody is buying those Japanese games...not even the Japanese.

Things might change with Kinect. The Tokyo game show had an incredible among of games coming in 2011 for Kinect that actually might sell really well in the states and elsewhere...wait and see I guess.

otherZinc2520d ago (Edited 2520d ago )

stonecold3,
You clearly dont understand business. M$ is in Japan to show respect & respect only. M$ is so dominant in America's with a lead over the PS3 by 10million, it could do away with Japan but M$ respects the business.

Kotaku,
It doesn't surprise me that Kotaku would write an article without doing their homework. I stopped listening to their podcasts almost a year ago when Brian insulted Collegiate Athletes across the world saying: athletes dont go to school to earn a degree. Really.

Well, if Brians staff did their homework, they'd understand why American products struggle in Japan. I wont give Brian the answer, let them do their research as I did, earning a college degree as a Student Athlete.

FrigidDARKNESS2521d ago

The Jap developers think they're better than everyone else "saying foeigners". This shows you how ignorant Japan culture is as of today.

garrod2520d ago

Obvious troll is Obvious

FrigidDARKNESS2520d ago

back at ya dude....this is not a troll comment.

tacosbell2520d ago

lawl you misspelled "Foreigner's" are you sure they are the ignorant ones?

FrigidDARKNESS2520d ago

typo error dude get over it.

tacosbell2520d ago

lol but that wasn't all thats wrong with what you said. I mean "This shows you how ignorant Japan culture is as of today." what is that even supposed to mean? lol

LiL T2520d ago (Edited 2520d ago )

(edit) @Frignorant
I am pretty sure that calling someone a a "JAP" is alittle more ignorant then calling someone a foreigner because you know thats kinda what people are when they are "Foreign" to a country, but I guess you knew that since your not ignorant at al.

Clarence2520d ago

What the hell are you talking about. It's America who thinks they know what's best for the world, which is why a lot of countries have a problem with us. Think before type.

And this is how the 360 is suppose to be selling faster than ps2 did at this time around last generation according to some people on here.

Both playstation one and two sold extremely well in every market not just a one a half.

But on topic, if things dont change soon we could be looking at a sega dreamcast all over again, only in the form of a 360 in japan.

So much for all those exclusive rpgs they pay for early on."oh well cant say they didnt try though"

Cherchez La Ghost2521d ago

How?! Mofo's over there are not buying the system. If I was MS, I would reduce the production down by 70% until demand increases. Here some ideas I would do to revamp the brand.....

- Japan has tons of Anime and Manga that MS can create. Start new IP's from this source (Claymore, Samurai 7, Black Lagoon, InuYasha, Sekriei, Soul Eater).

- Assemble some studio's with feash talent that knows what the hell they're doing.

- Get feedback from the consumers. Ask them what they like to see for upcoming games in the future.

Hell, let me run the 360 Japan business for 1 year. That's all I need.

denero12520d ago

makes perfect sense to bad companies don't do this

cemelc2520d ago (Edited 2520d ago )

What makes you think that MS will put effort in creating new ip for japan, if they dont even put effort in america??? The last new ip from them was Alan Wake and the next one is Kingdom that gods knows when that game will land.

Cherchez La Ghost2520d ago

True. MS have no other choice to get some new IP's. Alan Wake was not a bad game. MS did not push advertising for it.

garrod2520d ago

Good Idea but what you aren't taking into account is that between Sony and Nintendo they have most of the more popular Anime/Manga series tied up all for themselves. And it makes sense since they have been around longer. But that just makes it that much harder for MS to get a foothold :/

EasilyTheBest2520d ago

Buy Sega would be a great start.
Get a load of games into the arcades which by the way are still doing great in Japan. Then get them out on the 360 or Microsofts next console.
Bring out a Sega branded Handheld console.
