Check out the lifetime-to-date and year-to-date (2010) hardware figures for the PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, and DS. The numbers include data up to the November 2010 NPD report.
the gap between the ps3 and 360 in "USA" (just USA) has gotten bigger since last year from what i can remember. But world wide is totally different story. Wii sales are going down, and ds remains constant.
This is a very sensitive subject... tread carefully!
Yeah i can tell i have hurt quite a few people feelings by stating nothing more then just a simple observation. People here on N4G need to grow the F#CK up! I would re-post my epic 'essay' i had about the culture and fanboy dominance of n4g pertaining to how this website has become less of a gaming channel and more of a battle ground led by a few generals (gaming publications) and followed by mindless soldiers (n4g users) but if any of you are interested in reading it, check out my comments history. This site has some major issues, which start with the mods and administration and the trickle down effect starts from there.
Sensitive subject? No I don't think so. Just don't go around thinking USA is the world and we're all right.
What are you talking about the 360 has been outselling the PS3 World Wide for ages.
You need to change your wording if you want it to be true. Since its release the PS3 has been outselling the 360 worldwide. The 360 has sold more total consoles. The PS3 has been selling faster than the 360.
TinaSumSum Sorry if I am butting in on your trolling, but the PS3 continues to outsell the 360 every year. It has a faster selling rate. The PS3 also has been outselling the 360 in every country but America, minus a few weeks here and there for over two years. The only reason the 360 has world wide sales advantage is because of America. Americans have an adverage of 2 360s per house that owns one. The billions MS puts into America is rediculous too. America is the only country that games and has little to know idea what games are on PS3, and most of the time whats on 360. Hence Alan Wake and GT5 doing bad in the states. American gamers in the majority have poor gaming tastes.
The difference in USA numbers is almost made up by the different in Japan numbers.
FrankMcSpank if that crapstation 3 has been out saling the xbox every year in worldwide sales. Why is it that 4 years it hasnt been about to close that gap between the 2 systems at all ? In fact the gap between them is now bigger then ever. The crapstation 3 if falling more and more behind the xbox each and every month.
FrankyMcSpanky needs to wake up and smell the coffee. The gap between the 360 and PS3 is getting bigger by the day. btw Spanky, if your going to talk shit, how about you provide some proof? Alan Wake is a new IP that had almost no advertising compared to Red Dead which released on the same day. GT5 is an exclusive racer. Since FPS are so popular, racers have not recieved the same attention they would've got years ago. Your last part about American's having poor gaming tastes is complete BS. What's the most popular game on PS3 & Xbox in your country? Black Ops? NO fuckin way bro!!! Buut buuutt buttt.. stfu!
@k-lan "Since FPS are so popular, racers have not recieved the same attention they would've got years ago. " You might get your feelings hurt by GT5. Proof for PS3 gaining on x360? How about financial statements? Or have you ever tried to combine NPD with Media create?
k-Lan and thats_just_prime are two of the most idiotic posters here. The gap is wider? Are you serious? The gap has shrunk majorly. I suspect you two are the same idiot.
lil' DS tearin' shit up...
Wow at DS numbers... Impressive.
... So... Pachter was wrong? =/
Pachter was talking about December sales, this is only up to November. The December NPD hasn't been released yet.
Learn how to read old timer.
Reggie said Wii hit 7 million in the US for 2010..so expect huge numbers when NPD hits. :) why not wait till December data comes in? Nintendo everything is always more on point than this...
Should be noted that this doesn't include Dec, so its 11 months out of the year.
This is old. New NPD on Thursday.
Wow to bad this is missing two other systems, PS2 and PSP. Yeah what the heck Nintendo.
Sony has been stomped into the ground in the U.S. this gen -- Competition is not what they're use to, that much is clear. Wow! I remember they were like 3 million behind xbox 360 in world wide totals before the holidays and now they're like 8 million behind in just the US. I'd be afraid to see what the world wide totals would be now, 10 to 11 million? Sad.
You seem to be confused. Your numbers make absolutely no sense. The last release of PS3 numbers was 41.6 million worldwide till end September. Add some for Japan this quarter - say, 42 million straight (being very conservative there; at 75k per week lately, obviously the PS3 has sold far more than 400k in the past 13 weeks in Japan). Now, pretending the PS3 was taken off the market in the US and Europe and SE Asia and everywhere else and literally stalled at that number, MS has announced ~50 million world wide Xbox sales till early Jan. Therefore the 'largest', in a pretend world, gap there could be between the two is 8 million. And, again, this is pretending the PS3 ceased to exist 3 months ago - there is actually no physical way the PS3 could be 10-11 million behind. Not only would the PS3 have to have stopped selling completely, but 2-3 million PS3's would have to disappear off the face of the planet. Give it a conservative, say, 3.5-4 million sales and the gap 'might' have pushed out by 1-1.5 million to 4-4.5 million world wide. 'Might'. And again, that's basically assuming the worst case for the PS3's sales up against what are known/declared numbers from MS (ie. 50 million). Seriously, for someone claiming not to be a troll, you do an awfully good impression.
Actually my numbers seemed generious in Sony's favor. Xbox 360 – 23,565,075 PlayStation 3 – 14,252,196 Let's round these to even numbers, ok? We'll even round the xbox 360 numbers down since the Ps3's numbers are so close to 14. So we got 14 million Ps3's sold in the us 23 million xbox 360's sold in the us that is a 9 million gap between the 2, not counting the odd thousands we rounded down. Then we got to take the world wide numbers into account here, you know Europe and Japan? While I don't know those numbers off the top of my head -- I'm pretty sure the gap between xbox 360 and ps3 is around 3 to 4 million in Europe. That's 9 + 3 = 12 million gap world wide That is my best guess. Might be off a little but not more than a million. Sony's behind, case closed.
Balt, time to wake up. PS3 outsells 360 in Europe in LTD numbers by more than 2 million And in Japan by 5 million
@ Balt. LOL!! Those are LTD (lifetime to date) numbers. Try the numbers for this year. The Europe comment was gold too. The only advice I can give you is "NEVER INJECT CRACK". I know it would have been more useful to tell you that before you posted you're BS rant but it was more fun this way.
No, you're numbers make absolutely no sense (i'll try and 'de-confuse' you, but i'm not really sure how you've got so muddled to know where to start). Without trying to break it down into bits and pieces peculiarly divyd up and scribbled here and there , the numbers totalled are '50 million Xbox360's worldwide till early Jan 2011' versus '41.6 million PS3's sold till end September 2010'. Thus, again, 'if' the PS3 ceased to exist in September 30th 2010, the largest possible gap now could be 8.4 million. These are the numbers. Period. 50 million 360's till early January 2011 worldwide, 41.6 million PS3's till September 30th 2010 worldwide. "50 - 41.6" does not and can not equal "10-11 million" Now, given that we know the PS3 didn't "cease to exist on September 30th" to get like for like numbers you can at least add 500k from Japan. 320k+ for October US. ~550k for November US. That get's you up to 43 million. Then add US numbers from December, and all the rest of the world excepting Japan from October/November/December. Even if the PS3 had a modest December in the US - say 750k - and only pulled a couple of million in the rest of the world for the entire Christmas quarter, it would still mean sales of something like 46 million. Against the Xbox360's announced 50 million. Ie. 4 million gap. And again, that's being _very_ conservative with PS3 numbers - there's a high probability the PS3 sold more than 750k in the US in December, and more than a 'couple of million' in Europe/rest of world in October/November/December. No offence, but i hope you're taking the piss. It's either that, or off your rocker. Your numbers - especially this "10-11 million gap" - are quite literally impossible.
lol, well done snp. You did a pretty good job of explaining the facts to Balt but he will never get it. He thinks Europe is a country and Japan is somewhere in Mexico.
Lol. I just got a message from Balt. He's upset. Balt. You don't add the current LTD sales to the old LTD sales to work out the gap. I don't care if you do have to kick your shoes off to count to twenty. YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT YOU ADD SALES SINCE THE LAST REPORTING PERIOD TO THE LTD SALES! You can still send me messages of rage though. They make me smile.
@ Balt what SNP said is extremely accurate. The only additional item I would like to add is I wonder what you will say when the PS3 hits $200. This year onward will be the time where the PS3 will surpass the 360 in it's last bastion ~ total sales...although those who aren't blind to reality already know that the 360's total sales are a padded number because of all the failures, bans and repurchases these have caused. If it were truly possible to count all working consoles in consumers hands it would be a different story to what many fanboys so deeply believe.
So why hasn't the PS3 simply continued? Someone at Sony messed up and has continued to mess up for the last 4 years. They left a period of absolute and crushing dominance in the US and now are way behind. Its not like if they can say what PS3 fanboys say and just do "Ehh, its only the USA, its the world that counts." Cause at the end of the day ts money out of their pocket and lost of faith by their stockholders. How do you go from destroying the competition and outselling them worldwide by about a 5-1 margin, to still being behind even though you have been on the market for 5 years now. The one year headstart should have been eradicated just as easily as the one year headstart the dreamcast had. I guess on the good side, thank god for competition. Without it we would have been stuck with either a malfunctioning console or one that costs 600 bucks. Competition is good. We need BOTH to survive.
You do realize how dumb your statement is, right? You make it sound as if the PS2 had the same serious competition last generation as they do now. Xbox and GameCube were decent but they didn't come anywhere close to matching what the PS2 offered. The PS2 had GTA, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, and hundreds of other games. Xbox had Halo. Considering things like online play didn't exist for half of last generation and non-game features were limited to playing DVDs, games were basically the only thing that mattered, and Sony had all of them. Pretend it's entirely Sony's failure all you want, but the reality of it is that Microsoft and Nintendo both put up much better competition this time around and seeing how Sony mopped the floor with both last time around, it's no surprise they haven't achieved what they did last time.
Actually xbox had most of them games too check out some facts first
Yeah, Xbox had MGS2... An inferior version of it that released a year after the PS2 version. Xbox had GTA. It got GTA3 a whole two years after PS2 got it , and they got Vice City a whole year after the PS2 got it. Then Xbox got San Andreas six months after PS2 got it, which I might add, was after 360 was announced, at which point, even MS didn't give a crap about the original Xbox. And you point this out, why? Does it somehow affect the point I was trying to make? No, because these games all helped the PS2 immensely and by the time they ended up on Xbox, nobody cared. So tell me, did you completely miss my original point, or are you just pointing this out because you have nothing better to add?
Okay. But it's all good when the ps3 gets mass effect 2 a year later?
Did I say that? No, I didn't. But if you must keep trying to pick apart what should be simple logic, I'll play along... It's pretty simple... GTA helped the PS2. Mass Effect helped the 360. The difference is that the PS2 still had tons of exclusives even without GTA and by the time GTA even went to Xbox, the PS2 was by far the most popular console and there was no chance in hell the Xbox was going to catch up. It's a different situation this generation. Neither Sony or Microsoft can afford to lose exclusives because there are so few. So losing Mass Effect hurts 360 a lot more than losing GTA hurt PS2. Need more proof than that? Think about how much better the PS3 would be doing right now if GTA4 was a PS3 timed exclusive. The fewer exclusives you have, the more it hurts to lose one. It's pretty simple.
I really don't care what console I play something on as long as I play it. Fuck exclusives make them all multi platform
do people still think the ps3 is going to surpass the 360?
Honestly, don't know. Pragmatically, this late in don't think it makes a whit of difference either way. To date, expect the gap worldwide is probably pretty similar to what it was last time quarterlies came out (ie. about 3 million). It might be slightly increased or decreased to one or the other camp. Looking forward, it'll depend on price cuts, games and motion controller success and longevity.
You just need to look at the trends. For December, 360 will be up year-on-year at least 50% (Wedbush Morgan predicts close to 100%) while PS3 will be at 0% at best (probably in the negative though). At this point there is no way the PS3 can ever catch the 360. Obviously not in the US, but not worldwide either because the other markets can't make up for the US sales gap.
Trends swap and change pretty quickly, though - hell, the PS3 outsold the 360 for the September quarter worldwide by 750k (which being a set of smaller sales months was a bigger % gap than it seems). I believe it also outsold the 360 even in the US as recently as October (only two NPD's back). And year on year's for last year saw the opposite, if i remember right (the PS3 up and the 360 down - though i'd have to check). As for 'not worldwide either because other markets can't make up for the US sales gap' - that seems to me a bit of a guess. All prior quarterlies this year demonstrated the other markets not only could but did see the PS3 bridge the gap. What's happened this October-December outside the US? Is it enough to mitigate an upswing in 360 fortunes in the US? Don't know. Far as i'm aware, excepting Japan - where nothing really has changed - there is no hard data at this point. I haven't seen anything yet that talks about the effect GT5's release in France, Germany, Spain etc. has had on PS3 sales..? The Xbox360 has jumped by ~5.5 million in shipment numbers since end September. How many of those shipments went to the US, how many went elsewhere? How does this compare with PS3 shipments over that period to various regions? You're free to take a punt - and you may well be right - but without any hard info on Sony's recent fortunes, that's all it would be seems to me. And, as i said, that list of game changers could apply at any point to.
Yes. Kinect is what is driving these sales and once that product is exposed for the rubbish it is things will return to normal. That is, xbox reigns supreme in America but that is not enough to offset the dent Sony puts in everywhere else. Also, most 360 kids are gonna get jack of all the kinect focus this year and switch to a system that services real gamers, not pensioners, middle aged woman and babies.
It still is rather shocking how well the Xbox has done this time. When PS3 launched, lets be fair here, even us Xbots thought it was going crush 360 like it wasn't even there- and that was regardless of price. The Sony brand seemed completely unstoppable until either Sony dropping the ball or MS really understood their American market It must surely hurt Sony fans just a little though and articles like this must make them a little mad- although you'd hardly think this being how every Sony fan is happy to be in 3rd- well it's all about games of course Personally i'd like just the one Format then you don't have these stupid wars Anyway here we are now and it still amazes me
Yeah, the Xbox 360 success really surprises me too considering the strong Playstation brand let alone the Sony brand added. Then of course you have to consider the hardware failures and it is amazing it continues to sell. With the re-design and now Kinect, it seems Xbox 360 is poised to do well. I'm enjoying Kinect Sports and Dance Central, but looking forward to the announced Japanese developed games.
They've done well. I honestly did believe that they would do better this generation than last generation, but I wouldn't have believed that after a whole 5 years on the market the 360 would continue to be ahead of its closest competitor. The Wii was the biggest surprise to me. I was a little bit worried for Nintendo after the Gamecube, but they made some smart choices and opened up a new market, which has rocketed them past the other two consoles. I appreciate all the platforms. The PC is my favorite, but the HD consoles are close behind, and even the Wii serves its purpose in my life. The breadth of the industry is greater than ever before and I think the competition between all the platforms is bringing us better gaming experiences in general.
True.Sure is mad though but the good thing here is Nintendo has bounced back well, MS has also done well and it's unlikely Sony is going anywhere soon either despite getting a bloody nose from MS.Such an enormous share in the console world isn't a good thing i reckon so i'm glad of the change
MS has the muscle so to continue regardless of what would happen in this generation, but I'm glad Nintendo is financially well enough now to put up some serious heat the next generation. It's healthy for the industry to have some competition, and two competitors really aren't enough. I'm secretly hoping for a fourth one... Sega bring us the Dreamcast 2!
Yup RROD can't of exacty helped and you wonder if maybe MS could have been even more ahead
The US is the 360s territory land of the shooters not surprised there. when ever these articles get published. Its like watching a bunch of hookers fight for territory for their pimps
Why r u guys so serious in number? MS and Sony both are neck to neck but MS did very good job this Gen with hardware number, on the other hand Sony pretty much lost it in US.
Starting to notice the trolls, Tinasumsum and balt. Balt, did you pluck those numbers out of tina's head. 10-12mill, ROFL. I'm a PC man and also play the PS3. But the fake numbers on show here give vgchartz a run for their money. Channel flooding ftw.
That gap in sales is less then the amount of Xbox that died with hardware problems... so... in true... if we count ACTIVE, WORKING consoles I'd say the number must be very close to eachother, you can see that on software sales, some multi-platform games sold MORE on PS3 in US, with the exception of shooters like COD of course. Xbox brand got VERY powerful in US, the constant marketing pushes by Microsoft (in showing the X360 being played by every celebrity in all channels and other stuff like that), added to the blinded patriotism of Americans citizens couldn't hurt either. But all in all, what I know is that in this generation we have 3 very different consoles, each one with AWESOME content and functions, so we all win, who tha fuck cares if one sold more some million then the other? Do you have a percentage of profit the companies make?
B-b-but is not the world!!! Teh rest of the world is much more different and everyone there loves Playstation. Especially on planets like Jupiter, I heard they had great Move holiday bundles there...
Sony should raise there white flag in the U.S. and concede to MS.
and goes with the 360 in japan to they should wave the white flag to...
now we need the numbers.
It's funny, no one applauded Sony when the PS2 became the highest selling console of all time last gen. Now that there are two other consoles besides the PS3 doing really well everyone wants to bash Sony. Thats the kinda vibe I'm getting from reading all these comments...am I wrong?
sorry but the wii kicking ever butte ass if u add the numbers between ps3 and the 360 it does not even come close to the wii number so what does that tell u ooo the wii is kicking the ps3 ass in japan and america and u people talking about the ps3 and 360 the numbers come on people wake up ps3 in 3d who cares as long the ps3/360/wii bring out good games ....
