Gamesradar: PS3 piracy - it begins. First hacked game shown running on unmodded PS3

Gamesradar: After last week's cracking of the PS3's master key, it was only a matter of time before the first full pirated game booted up on PS3. And... it has. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow has been shown running off a hard drive, with the PS3 convinced it's a PSN game. GeoHot, the hacker responsible for publishing the key online, may well be 'totally against piracy', but the pirates in question are gleefully touting 'GeoHot's custom firmware' as their springboard. D'oh.

That is how all ps3 games should've been handled from the get go -- Sony should have given us the option to install our games to the hdd and run it from there. It's more convenient. It cuts down on laser eye wear. It makes the system work less. It's just a better means of play.

I wish Sony would release an official patch for this.

MAJ0R2624d ago

that wouldn't stop people from doing this

GrieverSoul2624d ago

They say its for homebrew but I see none!

ReBurn2624d ago

There's actually quite a bit of homebrew. Much of it was written right after the Jailbreak row. Now it is all being signed so that it can be installed via Geohot's custom firmware. The emulation angle has really taken off, as expected.

However, Pandora's box is opened. I knew that it wouldn't be long before someone found out how to wrap a ripped game with an installation package and get it running.

This really is sad news. This type of thing always ends up in piracy.

DualConsoleOwner2623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

Sony can patch this?? btw Math is really famous hacker.

he said it is possible for sony to patch this and block it through new hardware.

gaden_malak2623d ago

I don't really have a clue about all of this but surely if this is software related it can be detected and fixed?

That's the point of software isn't it?

captain-obvious2623d ago

i guess the first pirated game on the PS3 was infamous
i saw it in youtube video long time ago when the firs PS jailbreak came out
some guy was showing it off

but anyway
i dont really care

RedDevils2623d ago

"I don't really care" that sound like you really care LMAO

jadenkorri2623d ago

i bet sony is gonna let these idiots do this, there gonna play online, or log online, sonys gonna monitor and just like microsoft, ban the ps3s from psn forever. oh and yeah an update too.

I_find_it_funny2623d ago

does it work off downmloaded games, or originals copied to hard drive?

zag2623d ago

Oh well, that's Geohot fucked.

Sued for being an enabler of piracy on the PS3.

End of story.

HappyGaming2623d ago

"Sued for being an enabler of piracy on the PS3"

I doubt it.
He has been an "enabler" of piracy in the past its not his first time.

Nate-Dog2624d ago (Edited 2624d ago )

Lol wut? That's just asking for piracy. I could get a large HD, and rent or borrow as many games as possible and never have to buy a thing.

Edit: Sorry I misinterpreted what you said, I thought you were saying basically installing the whole game onto the HD and not needing the disk to play it, my mistake.

catguykyou2624d ago

No, like on the 360, they would implement a check that refuses to run the files unless the disk is in the system. The only time the disk is actually read is to verify its the same game. If the disk is removed, the game stops playing but all the data is stored and read on the HDD.

DaTruth2623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

I don't know. Sitting around waiting for a 25-50 gig game to install, to save on minuscule load times for most games. I also still have to put in the disk.

I never had the laser problem and this wouldn't help with YLOD, so I could care less either way!

DelbertGrady2623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

@DaTruth - It's faster to install a full game to the HDD on the 360 than it is to download and install all needed patches on a PS3 game. Usually takes around 8-10 minutes, whereas Uncharted 2 took me more than two hours.

And the install decreases load times noticeably and makes games run smoother as well.

They already have mandatory installs that don't do anything. Why not have full installs as well?

HappyGaming2623d ago

Well the PS3 isn't too load and it doesn't have any scratch issues (not serious ones anyway) because Blu Ray is coated with an anti scratch anti finger print anti dust Durabis layer:

The only think it would help with is loading times and when they are too slow developers give us installs to speed them up anyway.

At the end of the day it is always going to take long to load a 30GB games like KZ2.

HolyOrangeCows2624d ago (Edited 2624d ago )

A sad day for real gamers.
But look at all of the excited trolls. I hope they get run over by a bus.

Said the multi-account with a name based off of PS3 piracy.
Go ahead, find one instance when I praised pirates, or even an instance when I didn't curse their names. I'll wait.
The sad thing is that moderators NEVER do anything about trolls like you.

All video game pirates and their supporters can go rot in a hole.

FailOverHero2624d ago

Are this much against piracy when it is on other platforms? Or is your hate reserved for heretics that cross lord sony?

mantisimo2624d ago (Edited 2624d ago )

@ above I abhor all piracy.

@ Orange.
A sad day indeed but can Sony actually stop this now or is it really only stoppable by using a hardware fix?

I personally will buy all my games new as I always have (even though I have to save up) and hopefully most gamers will so the devs recoup enough to carry on developing. (I banned my son his xbox when he said he could rip his games for free)

Maybe sony can update with a patch a microwave blu ray lazer to implode any pirates heads when they try to rip a game.

That would be fun.

theIMP2624d ago

I love it when trolls call out trolls. Holy if the mod's did do anything about trolls you would have been gone a long time ago.

Anon19742623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

Doesn't matter. Is the 360 dead in the water because it was hacked? Is the Wii?

Sony will patch this, make a change and then the hackers will have to figures something else out. Pirates will play a few games but miss out on every single new feature, game and blu-ray released. Hardly worth it in my mind.

Now a more immediate bother is multiple account holders like FailOverHero who create new accounts and then start spamming up the comments sections with hundreds of primarily anti-Sony rants. Why not join gamers in actually discussions about games for a change? It's far more entertaining then simply trolling up the forums.

Now, my comment being reported as trolling in 3....2....1....

DaTruth2623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

I don't know if I'm completely against this! I can never rent games because I can't put in enough time within the rental window! This would allow me to rent a game and get around to it whenever I can. I didn't even rent games until the "no more late fees" at Blockbuster, which is practically non-existent now(found that out when they charged me a late fee and then they tried to lie that the 2 week extra time was never two weeks).

It just always sucked that so many games got classified as a rental, but that effectively means I'll never play it! And I just never see deals on used games until they're 5 years old. $40 for a rental is a bit much!

radphil2623d ago

"Are this much against piracy when it is on other platforms? Or is your hate reserved for heretics that cross lord sony?"

Is that any different? It's bad period. Seriously, did the one-sidedness from people on N4G get so bad that a simple bad action has to have some purpose for people to complain about it?

badz1492623d ago

why the skeptism? piracy is BAD, period! why turn this into a console war crap?

I against piracy for good! not just for the PS3 but for everything if I could. if not, I would have been owning the 360 and Wii a long time ago as those 2 consoles are sold pre-modded here in my country and original games are rare while pirated copies are everywhere! I don't really care for online MP as I seldom play them even on PSN eventhough it's free. so, should I embrace piracy on those 2 consoles just because I don't want to give them my money? you stupid pirates always find excuses but acting guilty all day long while hiding at the back of the term HOMEBREW!

Kurt Russell2623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

I think you have to be an idiot to care that much about piracy. You'll still wake up tomorrow with shit loads of things to do and games to play... Famine, war and poverty are problems. Your video game system is not. Man up and shut up girls.

finbars752623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

I think you have to be sad to go and hack into a console.First of all you must be the biggest virgin in the world to be known as a hacker. So lame.I could care less if he/she did it but to have nothing better to do with your life shows me that you are not that important of a person.Do something constructive with your life that people will actually praise you for.Not for doing something illegal.RETARD. I would rather support developers then to be some cheapscape f$%kwad who cant put this talent to good use.Its called move out of your parents house and get a real job where you can actually support yourself.Well im done with my rant and im sure that your mom is calling you for a sponge bath and spoon fed supper geohot.

This game is $20 new now what is the point of stealing this?

meetajhu2623d ago

This is gr8 news. I will download all useless games that are being released. Eg:-Gran Turismo which i will probably play for 10mins.

fr0sty2623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

last time i checked...

legal>>>>>ille gal (most of the time).

working console>>>>>ban ned console.

baodeus2623d ago

the problem with that thinking is that, people will stop buying game and just rent them. That isn't good for Sony or developers.

thedarkvault2623d ago

ya people are gonna wanna pay $8 a pop to rent and rip vs $60 to buy if you could just install from disc.

Tru_Ray2623d ago

Well, I will continue to buy my games new to support the developers and the industry. I don't even buy used games...

We can only hope that most gamers will be conscientious and realize that if they don't support the industry there will not be as many awesome games to play.

Hanif-8762623d ago

As much as i'd mod the [email protected] out of an Xbox360 i'd never touch my Playstation console reason one being that i love Sony and two being that it wouldn't really worth downloading games over 20GB that would take me forever lol

evrfighter2623d ago

"reason one being that i love Sony "

so you love a bunch of old japanese men that sit around all day thinking of new ways to take your money?

baodeus2623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

@deadly spartan

Now just think that some one else say the exact same thing except the opposite. How do you think? You would go that far to destroy the competition in the name of Sony? You just admit being a fanboy, nothing less. That is really sad.

Modding is ok, but it always lead to pirating which isn't good regardless of consoles. If you supporting pirating, it hurts everyone. Looks what happen to music, PSP, PC etc....

the_manson_charles2623d ago

This is crazy, you don't even have to mod your system? So I can just download the game, burn it to a disc, and put it in and play? You have to install a chip in the 360/Wii in order to play pirated games.

Heartnet2623d ago

why lol then people would just rent games install and send em back.. there is no reason to do that and they are with digital downloads so your reason is invalid

Vherostar2623d ago (Edited 2623d ago )

Guess N4G condones piracy too as every other topic is about ps3 piracy lately.. Where are the mods??

Why is this getting reported as a duplicate or old? Like Nineball2112 said, the other article(s) only failed because the source included instructions on how to install Geoshot's CFW and could ultimately lead to piracy, this does not.

edit: @moegooner88

This submission contains no instructions whatsoever. The article that _JL_ originally commented on and failed contained instructions in the source and again this does not.

This is a GamesRadar Article, reporters are LAME

Omegasyde2624d ago

The same company that owns N4g owns games radar FYI.
