Video game sales continued their strong growth this year, up 46% over the same period last year. The figure is more surprising considering August is usually a slow month for the gaming business, as consumers wait for the huge Holiday blockbusters.
Nintendo wins again 360 just had the PRICE DROP EFFECT PS3 is near the Same as LAST MONTH
Microsoft is in serious trouble with the 360 with these numbers. Both a price cut and their one big franchise getting released this month and they didn't even make it to 300k. All the talk about people going out and buying 360s to play Halo 3 is obviously nothing more than pipe dreams.
You are nuts if you think this isn't a huge gain for Microsoft. It didn't break 300,000? Well guess what, it had not surpassed 200,000 since almost forever. Also, the PS3 couldn't even make it to 160k with a price drop that doubled the MS one.
malcom what are you talking about this just reflex augusts sales halo is september. We will see what Halo does to the 360 next month.
That one big franchise (Halo) doesn't see the light of day until September 25th -- expect to see sharp increases in Xbox 360 numbers when the September NPD figures are released.
Bioshock could have tanked. It's a new IP. It only get better for MS now thru Jan. By the way... What happened to Metroid Prime 3? I thought it outsold Bioshock? Bioshock sold 490K Metroid Prime sold 218K
You're living in fantasy land if you think there is going to be a surge of people going out and buying 360s after Halo 3 has already come out. Anyone who wanted to play Halo 3 will have already bought the console by this week. After Halo 3 Microsoft's exclusive lineup is looking very weak. They were counting on GTA IV being out for the holidays to help move systems. Now it is pretty much just Halo 3 and Mass Effect. Mass Effect just isn't the type of game that is going to get people to go out and buy a console just for it. 2008 is looking very bleak for Microsoft releases. The past two big gaming shows have been duds for Microsoft and TGS doesn't look like they have anything big to announce. After this blip in sales for Halo and the price cut things are going to be looking bad for the 360. Up until now one could always say "Wait for Halo 3 to arrive" but now it has and it hasn't made much of an impact. Now what?
Aug NPD....halo 3 isn't till september...
"Aug NPD....halo 3 isn't till september..." Right...all those people Xbox fans have been claiming have been desperately waiting to buy 360s are going to wait until after the game ships to go out and buy the game. Yeah right... Everyone who wants Halo 3 has already bought 360s. Just like back to when Halo 2 was released. Xbox fans were going on and on about just wait until Halo 2 hits. Halo 2 came and went. A bit of a bump in sales and then right back to normal. Halo 3 is going to sell to almost exactly the same group of people who bought the first two Halo games. Almost entirely North America Xbox fans. The belief that Halo 3 would somehow spark 360 sales never made sense. Gamers who didn't want to play Halo last gen weren't going to just out of the blue suddenly get the desire to play Halo 3 - especially when Halo 3 is so, uh, similar to the previous two games. Instead of expanding and diversifying their first party line up Microsoft has foolishly bought in to their own Halo hype and put huge amounts of money hyping the game thinking they were going to make a huge impact on console sales. But in the end that money and effort is going to be wasted. Marketing is going to make Nintendo and Sony gamers from last gen want to play Halo.
I see you joined the site only 1 hour ago and you are already posting nonsense! Just what this site needs another anti-MS FUD spreading fanboy..
When you considering it that way he could be right.. Think about it Metal Gear and Final Fantasy aren't going to sale PS3's because the fans already own a PS3 right? i mean right? NOT RIGHT!
"You're living in fantasy land if you think there is going to be a surge of people going out and buying 360s after Halo 3 has already come out. Anyone who wanted to play Halo 3 will have already bought the console by this week." The only one here in a fantasy land is you my friend halo 3 does not come out till September 25th. "After Halo 3 Microsoft's exclusive lineup is looking very weak. They were counting on GTA IV being out for the holidays to help move systems. Now it is pretty much just Halo 3 and Mass Effect. Mass Effect just isn't the type of game that is going to get people to go out and buy a console just for it." Dude everyone was counting on GTA IV. Rockstar lost its Holiday. MS and Ps3 both lost a sales driver for this holiday season. And the fans of the series are being forced to wait even longer now. As far as the "Just halo 3 and Mass Effect" line of yours. You are also forgetting the entire library that is out currently for the 360 and the PS3. Face it the "new hot games" only work for the people that are hard core for there system. Someone that buys there system right now at this moment or during the holidays will be introduced for the first time to games like Gears of War and Dead Rising. Just like anyone that buys a PS3 this holiday season will not only be exposed to games like Heavenly Sword but also games like Motor storm and Resistance. Thats not even including the back catalogue of PS2 games and Xbox games that work on this new generation. The only line up right now thats looking weak lets be honest is the PS3. One of its heavy hitters (lair) bombed. Heavenly Sword looks promising I just do not like the fact that the game which was put on a peddle stool by fanboys on how much info the blu-ray can hold is only 6-7 hrs long. The fact that it is very similiar in game play to God of war does not even bother me. "2008 is looking very bleak for Microsoft releases. Now what?" The reason why 2008 may have seemed bleak (which changed as of TGS) is because MS does not want to project look whats coming out in 2008 they want to concentrate on whats coming out now. Frankly I do not know what my future will bring. So I am not going to be planning on caring about games that I have to wait a few years for. I want to know about games that I can get in a few months. I only care about this holiday season because it is coming. I will worry about next holiday season when that happens.
Great reply!!! I don't have the patience to respond like you did. +Bubble for you!!
It is funny, three or four years ago - whenever Halo 2 was released - I had the same exact types of conversations with Xbox fans. Everything was going to change when Halo 2 hit. Halo was just that powerful. Everyone really needed to just accept that fact. Halo 2 came and went. The Xbox got a minor blip in sales that month if you go back and look at NPD. When Halo 2 was released virtually everyone who wanted to play Halo 2 had long since bought an Xbox. To think that there are hundreds of thousands of people who want to play Halo 3 and still haven't bought a 360 is really grasping at straws.
Notice that if you look at this guys profile. He joined N4G about an hour ago. His is nothing more than a anti-microsoft troll that created another account and is continuing to flame as a different name. His wild writing style, is similar to naism's. Just a thought, I could be wrong, but I'm almost sure that he is not new to N4G, he's using multiple accounts. Spreading the hate.
halo and halo 2 were on the same system. Halo 3 is a new platform. Just like I can go back and show you that once FF10 came out it had a huge spike on the ps2 however each one after that, not so much because those that got 10 already had the ps2. Now when FF13 comes out you will see those people migrate from one console on to another. No one here is Nostradamus we can not predict the future. Sept 25th may became the end of PS3, or it maybe the end of 360, or it can be just another day. Mal your new here (unless your an alias) I'll give you some advice. This goes to all 360 and ps3 users. Do not write a check your bank cant cash. Meaning do not talk trash until after the fact. Prime example Lair. It was on the tips of everyones tongues. It was the end for the 360. The game was considered to be a sure fire AAA and system seller. Wanna know how that ended. I work as an ASM at gamestop. I have had about 7 Lair cancellations. And the other 8 have yet to show up. As well as my store has about 3 used copies of the game. I fear that heavenly sword if it does not have any great replay. Then that game too will be in the used pile quickly.
malcom, I don't think you've grasped... well anything at all really. People don't normally see a videogame advert for something like Halo and say "wow. I'm going out right now and buying a 360". It's a CUMULATIVE EFFECT. People will see good games as more of an incentive to buy the console. Whether you like Halo or not, it's a big deal. People WILL be impressed by it. And people will continue to be impressed by it for many months to come. it will have its biggest effect on consoles sales around the time of launch, and there will be a moderate boost in the months after. Just look at the original xbox sales after halo 2 launched, and the 360 sales when gears of War launched. Then, there should be another substantial sales spike for christmas, when people who were impressed get the console for Christmas. If you think The sales boost should be highest around August, then you just don't understand people at all.
Aug NPD....halo 3 isn't till september... thats the only reply you deserve child.
Just look at all you 360 fanboys pile it on, one "not sweating" Halo or MS guy, and all of you's respond to him like crazy. Very protective! its one guy against like more than 10 of you's, he must have really struck a cord with you guys.
XBOX360 sales were twice as much compared to the PS3 in August!!!
The ps3 will finish in 3rd place this gen.
The next two months will get even better for the Xbox 360 as Master Chief enters the poker game, so to speak. Disappointing figures for Sony as usual - TGS all of a sudden seems so important. E3 2006 was important. TGS 2006 was even more important. E3 2007 was crucual. TGS 2007 importance is off the scales. I don't even look at Wii sales anymore, that thing has sailed off into the sunset is in bed with its lover(s) whilst the rest are plodding along at the back.
dropped but gained some software sales in madden. 360 is doing great, but a bit lower than expected wii is still going very strong. still waiting for each of the console makers for announcement. they have some explaining to do
it shifted over 107k more units
276k is not a good figure . Bioshock sold 490k much lower than what PACHTER predicted Dont forget PS3 sales would increase in SEPTEMBER since WARHAWK ,LAIR and HEAVENLY SWORD are being released. In just 2 days 48k copies of LAIR and 56k copies of warhawk were sold which is very good SEPTEMBER would be a great month for ps3 as well
do you expect anyone to take your comments seriously? you always seem to talk sh!t and less people read your comments cos there ignoring you or just expecting the usual.
wow.. almost 650K units of Madden Sold on the ps2.. interesting
yeh its more then the PS3 and Xbox 360, but when you compare it to how many PS2s have been sold, its doing worse then the next gen consoles lol (technically it is anyway)
The Wii is going to sell 100 million.. Wow the Wii is unstoppable. Can't stop somthing thats part of main stream culture. Popular opinion is the greatest weapon; its a good thing the 360 has aleast some of that.
you mean the popular opinion that Xboxs aren't cool?
These are NPD numbers. 360 is still out selling PS3 popular or not were the poll was taken. Gotta dissagree... I see that i'v got a hell of a fanbase.
You do know that poll was just like 2,000 teens from Britain right? Not exactly a legitimate argument.
think the most telling bit of the article is how ps2 madden sales dwarf ps3's. wonder if sony wishes theyd of dropped ps2 like MS did to xbox. doubt that, but as long as ps2 stays strong the ps3 will be weakened by it edit @ below - ya thats what i meant lol
I agree, but really from a company standpoint completely illogical. Since PS3 loses (or small gain from current price drop hardware wise) $ on every purchase, PS2 gains a LOT. Once the consumer shifts and HOPEFULLY Sony reinstates the 20GB or makes a rumored 40GB people could move. But there is no doubt Wii is killing everyone right now.
However, I think it may all be part of the plan. I mean, keep your fanbase loyal. Keep the PS2 people happy. When the PS3 gets to a level that your average consumer will actually look at the thing, then drop the PS2 and watch your fanbase all come over to the newer gen.
I agree with you 100 Percent,if the PS2 Outsale the PS3 this Holiday Season, the PS3 is going to be in serious Trouble in early 2008.
It is funny to see people trying to portray the PS2 as some sort of dilemma for Sony. Eight years into the console's life and EA just sold 650k copies of one of their games on the system. That is how Sony has earned the largest support of console developers and created the largest and most diverse library of games ever for a console with the PS2. Guess which console those 200k new PS2 owners are going to be buying next year and on as the PS3 drops down to 400 and then to 300 dollars? The one that plays their giant library of PS2 and PS1 games - all upscaled beautifully to 1080p sets that are going to be around 500 dollars by next year. And the console that has new versions of all those same exclusive franchises they bought PS2s for: Final Fantasy GT God of War SOCOM Ratchet and Clank Team ICO games Naughty Dog games Metal Gear Solid The PS2 is now wildly profitable, the PS3 is due to break even at the one year mark, and both systems are selling across all three major console regions.
I guess what you don't understand is that every new PS2 sold is not necessarily a future PS3 owner. PS3 sales are COMPETING with PS2. Yes, all the money still goes to Sony, but these new owners seem to be focused on price.(If they weren't, they would buy a PS3 and just play the old games) Next year (as you say), which system will be in a better situation to offer next gen games for significantly less? The 360 or the PS3?
""The PS2 is now wildly profitable, the PS3 is due to break even at the one year mark, and both systems are selling across all three major console regions."" what dark ass crack are you pulling that from? the ps3 is gonna break even at the one year mark, The ps3's loses money STILL on each console sold, It still costs something like 700 dollars to make, and they lose 100-200 dollars on its sale. The ps3 wont break even any time soon, The 360 makes a profit now, and the wii has made a profit from the day it was released...sony is NORTORIOUS for selling their consoles at a major loss because they we're able too, *they are no longer able to do this*
As long as sales of the PS2 are going strong. Thats a positive because that is bringing a stronger fanbase to sony. Bringing in more money to help support the lack of PS3 sales and when sony dropes the PS3 price to $400 than that will convince a lot of PS2 owners to jump to the new system.
what you have said isn't always the case, i own a PS2, and still sometimes buy a game for it, but i went out and brought an Xbox 360 rather then waiting for a PS3 because of the price tag. now i have my Xbox 360, my PS2 has moved into my little brothers room, he sometimes buys a game for it. not a lot as he is young but still, and he now wants an Xbox 360 for Christmas, there is NO CHANCE for any of my brothers getting a PS3 because of the price, but the Xbox 360 is now in the price zone for them to be able to have one. as for me, i will HOPEFULLY be getting a PS3 sometime near of just past Christmas, then i will as they say "have the best of both worlds" =D oh and on the Nintendo Wii, i am buying one for my little brothers to share, well for the whole family to share really. so in this one house i live in, there are 2 PS2 owners that want/have an Xbox 360. oh and one more thing, my older brother still has his PS2 (hes moved out and is at UNI) he wants a PS3, BUT because hes at UNI there isn't cash pay for something like that, so hes going to get an Xbox 360 and XboxLIVE to play against me online. thats 3 people from one family...
Im not to mad im glad PS3 sales managed to stay above 100k, and I think September will be the same, and hopefully the announcement of the 399 PS3 is true and sales will pick up strong again.
@1.6 Nah, sony still has ton of ps2 support, majority of this world still sticks with ps2 and wii atm. it'll be a lot later until ppl move to HD next gen and by then, sony will drop support for ps2 and the 100 or so million fanbase they have (potentially) will move to ps3 mind you asians around the world dont buy 360s, i know like one in my entire life lol
were PS2 owners so not every PS2 owner is going to go with the PS3.
50%... where did you get that number.. out of your a$$??
everyone that had a ps2 , is buying a xbox 360. and the %5 - %10 that havent yet , will buy a xbox 360 after halo 3 releases.
I don't know how accurate that is but I never owned an original Xbox, nor did 3 of my buddies that have 360's only now. I do know 2 people though that had Xbox 1's only and switched to 360's.
Why is there so much bashing going on? I mean, in the last gen, I had a GC, an Xbox and a PS2. I have a 360 so far, my kids want a Wii for Xmas (though I'm still baffled by its popularity, I suppose I might play something on it) and I'll wind up getting a PS3 once it hits a reasonable price and they have some stellar exclusives available. Are the majority of people on this site really committed to only one console?
da more sales i see for the 360 da more it will hurt microsoft...since there is goin to be lots of broken 360s..lol..ill see the ps3 pickin up sales by the end of this year..at least is doin great in japan..
You sound like one DUMB AZZ FANBOY FOOL.
im glad PS3 sales managed to stay above 100k, and I think September will be the same, and hopefully the announcement of the 399 PS3 is true and sales will pick up strong again. I am also happy about Wii and 360 sales but i want Sony to really back in the fight
they really have to lower there price to the same as the cheapest 360. they are losing too much market share. and i hate nintendogs, pokadogs and any other dog.(nintendo sucks)
the NPD numbers are out. good to see the 360 is doing well ah the wii my god that console is selling too well. nintendo must be loving every second of it. well they do deserve it
ouch sony, only bad news this past weeks
Interesting sales numbers. The September numbers should be more interesting as that's when a lot of the major software begins to hit.
this is also the first time the 360 has outsold the PS2
4-500K 360 sales in September. Halo really is just that beastly. To be honest, even though I'm not as avid a fan as others, I'm tempted with Bioshock out now and Mass Effect on the horizon, but I'm still waiting for the little birdy named Falcon.
I'm not sure that Halo 3 will allow the 360 to completely overtake the Wii next month. I mean, most of the Halo fans in the US already own a 360. Oh, and depending on what actually causes the RROD, the Falcon may or may not solve the problem. The new heatsink should though.
I don't know why people keep saying that "people who want halo3 already own a 360" i personally know 4 people that don't wanna buy a 360 till halo3 comes out. Then again i guess if you think of it that way. No ones going to buy a PS3 for Metal Gear or Final fantasy i mean the fans already own a PS3 right? See i'm not right... that statement is completely wrong!
Okay, you have a point. I still don't think it will overtake Wii sales though.
The only way i think the 360 is going to beat the Wii is if it is cheaper then the Wii which will never happen. Plus girls love the Wii because it's "Cute"
Oh God Sang, That is totally true. People sound so stupid when they say Sh!t like that. Take me for instance. I'm not getting a PS3 till FF13 comes out. That way I can spend all my money on other great things instead of having a PS3 collect dust in my living room. I know a lot of people feel the same way about halo. They have been waiting till it comes out to get the system and the game.
you've gotta figure that there's the cautious gamer out there that ARE waiting for Halo to drop because of the widely reported HW problems. I'm sure that many people figure if they get one by the time Halo drops, it's bound to be more efficient than a launch console. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen, but it sounds sensible anyway.
The problem with the XBOX 360 is that there is too much heat generated. This has a number of unintended effects. The heat sink just helps mask the problem. The falcon reduces the amount of heat and will eliminate the problem. The real question for me (my launch + 3 months console is still working fine) is whether the Falcon will be quieter - if the stupid DVD drive is a better version then I might be tempted. But I will probably wait until the price of the Core drops below $200 and then buy a new unit with the cooler chips and the quieter DVD drive and the HDMI and plug in my HDD.
Got to change my name to "HE HATE ME". Is it because i'm right alot?. #6.4 thats a mighty fine list you got there...
may your tenure here reflect that of the now defunct XFL.
could have ben devastating lets pause for a moment and think about how devastating it could ben.
I really hate that stupid argument that everyone who wanted Halo 3 has bought a system, by your logic since MGS3 sold 3 million everyone who wants it must have bought it already it makes the same sense!
hahaha LOOK at my 2 above posts i said the same thing.. RIGHT ON Bubbles for you!
some say the PS3 got the best line-up, and some say the 360. The Wii is in a league of it's own with it's favorable market-price. Sony cut it's price very early, and the 360 waited almost 2 years, well the Wii, like I said in a league of it's own. Nintendo probably broke even already. If there are no more price-cuts this holiday, the developers are left, to push units/sales, as well as more: -Hyped (future)games -Firwares upgrades -Promises & potential press conferences -Exclusives gained/lost -HD format strengths and support -More reliable hardware -Titles with "AAA" potential We all know Developers/Games is what bring people to consoles. Not every game will be "AAA" game, as far as popularity, and sales. You have to get used to it, we have seen a lot the past 10 years, so games really need to innovate and do something different, but form wha tI have seen it has been aight. This Gen You will geta mix of, Percentage Gaming Grades: A-20%--> (These games will sell to the HCORE and niches) B-50$--> (IMO, these games matter the most to the Casual Masses) C-20% --> (These games can be great pastime, waiting for a blockbuster) D-5% --> (At your own risk, Bargain Bins) Slprs-5% -->(These are Bargain Bin surprises, Diamond in the ruff) Forget all the other "jibber jabber" the next-gen consoles have or come with. While it's nice and all, it's the "GAMES" that matter most. We really have never had 3 consoles compete so stiff for market-share. The best console war was probably SEGA Vs Nintendo. Now we have 3. Nintendo=Tradition Sony=Brand Name MS=Big Pockets The bottom line has been, all of these factors play to each console strengths. That's why I do not see one Quiting anytime soon, regardless of what "FANBOYS" Portray/spin/cook up. We will see how much Units are sold, and we can point to the exact reason why.
