Industry source: Google's Phonetic Arts buyout will halt innovative dialogue tech in games

An industry source has told BeefJack that he and colleagues are disappointed by Google’s acquisition of Phonetic Arts, the speech technology company who’d previously been supplying tech to the games industry.

The programmer, who asked that he and his company were not named, said that Phonetic Arts had supplied the tech to several game developers, who had primarily used their systems to create placeholder voiceovers by automatically connecting pre-recorded audio. But no developer to date has shipped a game which uses the technology in the final version – something our source claims was in the pipeline.
