This Is Exactly What This Industry Is Missing

NextGN writes: "Gaming journalism has become a joke. Nowadays we have annoying little pimpled face brats, unhygienic foulmouthed rednecks, and even illiterate hyperactive rappers calling themselves journalist. I don’t blame them for trying, I respect their enthusiasm and encourage them to share their opinions – it’s just that their motive for writing or video-blogging is nothing more than a poor effort at claiming fame and getting freebies. This could also be said about some professional gaming journalists today."

Which are you?

@AI80,

Hmmmm. I would say none of the above. I am the gamer who thinks he is the journalist that calls himself a gamer pretending to be a journalist.

I don't know. I have said it before, I consider myself a gamer with benefits. I take what I do seriously. I am very passionate about the industry - however, I am happy with just being called a blogger. I am not trying to tie my identity into all of this - I use FiLTHY ESKiMO for almost everything I do, and when I do "vlog" I also hide my identity. I love writing about games. It's the opinions that matter, not me. :)

@FiLTHY ESKiMO

My problem with what you said is that you didn't take issue with the quality of anyone's content. Instead you started hurling personal insults (based on physical appearance) at people who you almost certainly haven't ever met.

It was vitriol with no actual content. The industry is bad because journalists are, according to you, suffering from acne, crippling body odour or are just plain illiterate.

You call that journalism?

FiLTHY ESKiMO2465d ago (Edited 2465d ago )

@AI80,

My opening sentence may be harsh but it is accurate, nonetheless. I never said that their appearance is what is crippling the industry, I said it's their motive.

"I don’t blame them for trying, I respect their enthusiasm and encourage them to share their opinions – it’s just that their motive for writing or video-blogging is nothing more than a poor effort at claiming fame and getting freebies."

I wouldn't call these people journalists. Even I could call myself a journalist by the very definition of the word, it is one of my occupations, but I rarely do.

I am just calling it is as I see it. I am sorry if I offended you.

Al802465d ago

@FiLTHY ESKiMO

"My opening sentence may be harsh but it is accurate, nonetheless."

But it isn't - it's the perception of someone who hasn't met the people that he's talking about. And how exactly can you claim to know what their motives are anyway? If I were to meet someone who didn't fit into one of those three daft categories that you created, should I assume that they are 'Ok'?

Of course some people like the idea of the minor celebrity status that can come about from working in this business, and some like the idea of free software a bit too much. But who are you to say that it has shaped their output? Are you speaking from experience?

My point is.... you hurl abuse at other writers and yet, by creating empty and venemous content like this, you're making yourself part of the problem.

"I am just calling it is as I see it. I am sorry if I offended you."

You didn't offend me, chief. It's just very odd that you feel the need to kick out at others when you should really be raising the quality of your own output first.

@AI80,

I have a name for each one of these individuals I described and I would definitely say I know enough about them to be able to justify the opening sentence as "accurate".

We have received countless of emails from these so-called journalist YouTubers. Not to mention the attacks on our website, all in the name of shameless self promotion.

I never said that all game writers and vloggers are like this, just most (perhaps that was wrong of me). I speak only from my own experience. I am not excluding myself - I have become some what bitter from dealing with the immature crap from these people. Yet, I have never called them out until now.

The point of the article was to bring your attention to Armchair Conquistadors. Great little site I discovered! I guess I got a little carried away with the ranting.

You are right, AI80. I think I did cross the line. I guess stooping to their level is never a good thing. ;)

edit:

Just this once, though. I deserve this much. :) I will use my "journalistic" powers only for good from now on.

Well, I am off.

Happy Holidays!

@FiLTHY ESKiMO

Exactly right. There are plenty of poisonous people in this industry for sure, but

a) They are in the vast minority

and

b) Make sure that you never play the game their way. They'll always win. They're natural idiots ;)

Ducky2465d ago

Reminds me of that one quote:
Never mess with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

I used to enjoy the giant bomb quick looks for stuff like that, but sadly that seems to have been infected by the dreaded gaming apathy plague.

And its why AVGN is so watchable he lives his nes passion lol

Kitchen_Sink2465d ago (Edited 2465d ago )

"considering that a good percentage of this industry consists of immature idiots who pose as journalists and that a lot of professional journalists are pretentious douchebags these days (not entirely our fault, I suppose – they say never mix business with pleasure)"

Couldn't have said it better! People in the gaming industry take themselves waaaay too seriously. Some journalists act like they are superstars. People need a reality check.... this is gaming! It's entertainment news!

@AI80,

He called himself a douchebag in this article. :P He also encourages gamers to to write about games just to do it for the right reasons. But what he is saying is accurate. The industry has become a joke (was there ever a time when it wasnt?) I also love the fucked that he is plugging a tiny little site on his blog. Jolly good form.

@Matthew94

LOL! The internet is the perfect example of a paradox. It's a black hole that will consume mankind.

Matthew942465d ago

The great thing about the internet is that anyone can get on it.

The bad thing about the internet is that anyone can get on it.
