Disney Epic Failure

If you follow the gaming media at all, you've probably seen Epic Mickey's dismal Metascore rating. While I personally enjoyed the game, I have to admit, I'm surprised the score is even as high as it is. The main issues that plagued the game didn't come from a lack of conceptual prowess - otherwise no one would have been excited in the first place. They came from a disappointingly lackluster execution that wound up feeling anything but epic. Where did the game go wrong, exactly?

Disney failed in my eyes the second the cancelled Pirate of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned, at the very last minute, and decided to replace it with a Lego-Game movie tie-in.

Spenok2768d ago

Wait wait wait wait wait.... they canceled the Pirates game? When did that happen? I thought it was only delayed.

Wow, i just googled it and your right, that really sucks. I was looking forward to that one too. :/

Put it on the PS3 with Move support and see if it is a failure or not.

Blaine2768d ago

Pretty much what I was thinking:

Where did the game go wrong? Right from the start: putting it on the Wii.

From the start the game was supposed to be a revolutionary gameplay experience... Don't know how they thought they were going to do that on underpowered hardware.

morganfell2768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

A great deal of money was invested in that game and unless there was some sort of exclusivity with Nintendo then it is only sensible, especially given Disney's relationship with Sony, that the PS3 would become the logical platform.

I did not buy the game as I have felt all along the game, successful on the Wii or not would come to the PS3.

If it was successful then Disney would say, "This sells. Let's move it to the PS3 and the Move."

If the game failed, then Disney would say, "Let's put it on the PS3, push the tech and we can recomp our investment."

badz1492768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

that would be a great idea. I just hope they don't make it MOVE exclusive. that will be like preparing the tombstone for the already nailed coffin! the only way they can gain success with this game on PS3 is by having both DS3 and MOVE control support. and by that, I mean I really wanna see the game seeing light of the day on the PS3.

Moerdigan2768d ago

I personally think it would be good to keep it with motion controls if it's ever ported to PS3.

That's what the game was built upon so they should keep it. I was glad when they added move support to NMHeroes paradise, because that's how the game is originally meant to be. I'm a purist like that.

Handhelds_FTW2768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

The game being on the Wii is not what cause it to fail

The problem is the game it self, it's really mediocre.

It's really monotonous and repetitive. The only good part of the game are the classic Mickey cartoon 2D platform stages.

You could port over to PS3 with HD graphics + Move and it would still suck.

This is just another example of over extended promises not being met and hype.

Sad that the best Disney game to date, is still Duck Tales on the NES.

bennyace2768d ago

If the gameplay lacks, having better graphics won't make the game better itself. I tried it and, to me, the worst thing about the game is the awful camera control. You just can't seem to ever get a good viewpoint and there are a lot of blind jumps, where it hard to evaluate the distance of your jump because you can't get a good camera angle.

If they would port it like that with just graphic enhancements it would have better reviews or wouldn't be more popular.

AWBrawler2767d ago

there are some things like one of the stages that features NES cartridges, that'll most likely keep this exclusive

Haro2767d ago

I think what additional hurt it, is how originally it was shown as a "dark" game then turned out not to be.

Blaine2767d ago

My point went right over your head.

More powerful hardware doesn't ONLY MEAN better graphics. It also means being able to introduce innovative gameplay mechanics that wouldn't be possible without the processing power.

That's why I blamed the game's shortcomings partly on the Wii; because underpowered hardware hinders the devs' ability to create innovative gameplay.

The funny thing is it`s probably not a bad game. I`ll try it when it comes out on the PS3 for the Move. Reviews are alot of the time completely inaccurate when taking into consideration WHO will be playing the game......look at The Fight.

Marquis_de_Sade2768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

Only gaming journalism would regard 73% as "dismal".

CrzyFooL2768d ago

I think people just dont want to play a Mickey Mouse video game. I was never excited about Epic Mickey and I'm glad it's come and gone. Maybe Warren Spector can get back to working on games we want to play like Thief 4 and helping Square get Deus Ex out the fucking door already.

tplarkin72768d ago

73 is pretty good for Metacritic.

Xander-RKoS2767d ago

I was thinking the same thing.

Shnazzyone2768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

To be honest, i'm playing this game now and haven't experienced any of the so called "awfulness" everyone seems to be obsessed with. Camera hasn't given me any more issues then mario galaxy did and the pointer controls are dead on, like they always have been for me. Sidescrolling levels can be cumbersome... But the storytelling is undeniably awesome and the sheer level of detail and thought that went into this title is amazing.

The more i play this the more i feel this is a wii game victim of the wii hate phenomena where games will be brought down 1 or 2 points for no reason other then it's on the wii and some in the game media still refuse to look at wii games based on the systems merits. Rather they base their review based on the expectations made from the HD systems, which just is an easy way to keep wii haters from raging on your site.

Right now i think the best review i've read on this game is the one on gamesradar and x-play. it's a AAA title. Don't listen to all these haters rating it down when a straight port with an hd re-skin would probably suddenly merit a 8-9 score like it deserves.

It's why review scores are bull these days. Seriously, I have had next to no trouble with this camera or pointer controls. It's possible one reviewer said it then they were so hard up to find fault in a wii game that they all pounced on the bandwagon.

Thankfully the sales say this game is doin pretty good, and is currently a success on the wii. So now the scores don't matter, the consumer has spoken.

Just wanted to point out what great comment this was.

I also think that was a great comment.

Xander-RKoS2767d ago

I beat it and was happy with it and it totally got me thinking of how game storytelling would be better if the playstyle matters philosophy was adopted more often.

MGRogue20172768d ago (Edited 2768d ago )

The pirates out there are enjoying it, you know...
