Happy Birthday, Dreamcast

Today marks the eighth birthday of one of the most underrated and unappreciated consoles ever to hit the market, The Sega Dreamcast. The little system gave birth to some really great games including Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Rez, Wetrix, PowerStone, and many others.

The story is too old to be commented.

i don't ever think that i can part with it. I haven't fired it up in awhile but i can't leg it go. It probably is my favorite console ever. And the XBox and XBox 360 took a lot of points from it. Sega even sold them the basis for the XBox and XBox 360 controller. I do miss the VMU technology though, that was still ahead of it's time. Imagine all those madden fans how useful a VMU would be. For those that don't know, the VMU allowed you to pick plays that were displayed on the controller, that way it made it nearly impossible for cheaters that watched your button presses to know what you were picking. Pure genius.

Happy Birthday old friend!

IMO, the name 'Dreamcast' is one of the worst names a gaming console has ever been given. 'Dreamcast' you think 'Dream'. 'Dream' you think sleep and boring. Considering the main videogame demographic is males aged 15-34, the last thing a console needs to be associated with is 'boring'. Whoever thought of the name (and more importantly approved it) gets a failing marking in my book.

But as a console itself, I thought the Dreamcast was pretty good. It just got blindsided and steamrolled by Sony and the Playstation/PS2.

Sega saturn was black. The xbox was black. The Dreamcast was white. The 360 was white. The Dreamcast came out beforre the PS2. The 360 came out before the PS3. The dreamcast refused DVD. The 360 refused hd-dvd or bluray. The dreamcast has hardware issues. The 360 has hardware issues. Anything else you'd like to add on the similarities? Pricing? Software lineup? Ads?

I skipped the PS1 gaming era all the way until the PS3 came out, but for some reason, I DO feel a longing for the Dreamcast. What the heck? ???

The ergonomics of the dreamcast controller could be described as maybe "murder" but the dreamcast was a neat little system indeed, i regret throwing mine out. The 360 rocks but I'll go out on a limb and predict that they'll be a very powerful Dreamcast 2 ,maybe codenamed "Omega" or "infinity" some 3 years from now.

there is one major similarity between Dreamcast and Xbox 360, both console campaigns were spearheaded by Peter Moore. Dreamcast quit on Peter and he quit on X360

The Dreamcast was the originator of online gaming before Xbox live, Playstation, and nintendo. If it wasn't for Dreamcast online gaming will never see the light of day. Dreamcast was like a mentor to the Xbox and Xbox360, because to me those game systems are the reincarnation of Dreamcast!!! If you think about it many members from Dreamcast came to Xbox including Peter Moore, who help Xbox become a successful gaming machine that is Dreamcast answer to Playstation!!!!

sorry, but PC was the originator of online gaming.

and there was me thinking the PC started it...geez THANKS sega....

(hehe add the word "console" in "online gaming")

Dreamcast was a great system, I still play games like Virtua Tennis and Soul Calibur, which is the second best game of all time (behind Zelda Ocarina of time, www.gamerankings.com ), the biggest problem was that was not loved in Japan

Happy birthday! Awsome underated console. Ready to Rumble boxing, Shenmue, Dead or Alive, Jet set Radio, Sega Bass Fishing, not to mention the greatness of Powerstone! Good times to anyone who had, or still has one of these pocket rockets!

EDIT: Did anyone else play Soul Calibur with the fishing rod??? lol!!

It was crazy fun! not very controllable but fun to swish the sword around. I wonder where Nintendo got the idea for their wiimote from?.....

BTW I still have my boxed Jap DC limited Orange box (first 100,000 promo in Japan). I just can't let it go. HotD II with light gun is still a firm fave alonside soul calibur and Jet Set Radiiiioooooo!!!
