EA Abandoning Quality Single Player in Favor Of Tacked-On Multiplayer Rubbish You Don't Want

Game Podunk blogger Gregoric writes, "This is something that someone should tell to EA Games President Frank Gibeau who says that single-player only games should be abandoned in favour of ‘connectivity’ and other things that nobody REALLY needs in order to have a good gaming experience. What he and the rest of the EA Studio heads need to realise is that if you make a good single player game that’s of high quality then it will sell. Look at the first Uncharted, that sold perfectly well and there was no multiplayer or connectivity to speak of what-so-ever..."

the title of this article is very stupid and unprofessional SMH

Neckbear2809d ago

The title sums up my feelings perfectly.

Lou-Cipher2809d ago (Edited 2809d ago )

Im with you.

That title is the most accurate title I have ever seen on N4G, because that is exactly what EA is about to start doing.

Single player should never have to share it's budget or it's length with a mediocre multiplayer mode.

Greed is absolutely destroying game quality, and it is only going to get worse.

Cevapi882809d ago

he basically went and bitch-slapped Dead Space right in the face by saying that...considering the game was only SP and it had a story....gee-whiz

Christopher2809d ago (Edited 2809d ago )

I really think people are taking what one figure head says over the reality of it. EA just announced the Dead Space 2 single player was longer than the first game. Dragon Age and Mass Effect series are grounded in single player, the former comprised of some ridiculous amounts of single player activity.

You also have to understand the context. His discussion was on making a blockbuster game, one that would appeal to the general masses, which do tend to be online shooters of one sort or another.

And, honestly, what blockbuster FPS out there that sells millions doesn't focus on multiplayer?

Ryudo2809d ago (Edited 2809d ago )

Actually EA have put more focus into the single player and less into the multiplayer on some games.

I don't believe the title is accurate at all, Take the battlefield series for example. Battlefield 2 and 2142 had no single player to speak of at all expect for an offline multiplayer mode.

Now look at badcompany 1 and 2, both have a fully developed single player mode. If anything EA's stance on single player experiences has only gotten stronger.

Dead Space, Dante's inferno and plenty of other EA games focus solely on single player.

They even mention L4D in the article which clearly shows how nonsense this is, L4D doesn't work as a single player experience it started it's life as a multiplayer mod.

And they go onto complain about it not being a good single player game sorry this article is nonsense.

Sheddi2808d ago

Shouldn't the title read
"Activision Abandoning Quality Single Player in Favor Of Tacked-On Multiplayer Rubbish You Don't Want"

ngecenk2808d ago

sadly, multiplayer games, no matter how bad they are, sold pretty well compared to single player only.

Ryudo2809d ago

Yep, complete whine fest by someone who has no idea what there talking about.

"BAHHHH!!! Battlefields single player sucks!...." If your playing battlefield for it's single player a game which has always since release focused on multiplayer your abit of a retard.

"BAHHHH!!!! Medal of Honor reboot single player is inferior to the multiplayer!....." Of course it is DICE developed the multiplayer and there an insanely talented studio.

"BAHHH!!!!! Left 4 Dead doesn't have good single player!" Of course it doesn't retard the game started it's life as a multiplayer mod it was designed with a mulitplayer experience in mind.

Seriously DICE and Valve games 80 percent of the time are always centered around multiplayer experiences, they have been since day one.

Yet you here people bitching about the poor single player, on a game that was never targeted towards a single player audience it's fucking idiocy.

ijkabob2809d ago (Edited 2809d ago )

Mabey he did it for the lulz. It made me rofl

edit: The title that is.

NovusTerminus2809d ago (Edited 2809d ago )

Hmmmm... Sounds like most games these days. I don't play allot of online games, never been a big fan of them. So yeah, most online modes are things I don't want. Unless they are Co Op, I tend to prefer those.

Shazz2809d ago

hopefully deadspace 2 single player isnt going down the 4-6 hour route .

Christopher2809d ago (Edited 2809d ago )

They just said earlier this week that DS2 single player was longer than the first game.

C'mon people don't go all "drama queen" on us here because one guy at the company made such a comment. Do you really think Dragon Age and Mass Effect franchises are going to suddenly lose their single player perspective?

radphil2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

This is EA son. You don't remember how they dragged the sports video game competition in the ditch through money by buying licenses in football?

And then got trounced through Elite 11 by it being pushed back and then canceled.

Thing is there's a difference between EA, and the developing studios under them.

We all know about Bioware, we all know about Dice, but did you guys take into account the other EA studios that work on games?

Thing is, if you give them an inch, they'll take a mile. Look at how the EA Pass thing is taking off.

Christopher2808d ago

More than I believe random people on the Internet. And, based on the games I've seen out of their studios, excluding sport games that I never touch, I don't see why we should be complaining about the games they're putting out or their length.

radphil2808d ago

So at this point you'd believe word pandering, than actual material shown.

Christopher2808d ago

You do realize you're the one believing word pandering at this moment, right?

radphil2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

I gave you examples, you're here beating around the bush. You just said you excluded the sports games, which is a good candidate for the topic at hand.

Immortal3212808d ago

then I'm abandoning multiplat games.
(which I already do, just surprise the rest of the world didn't follow.)

Huwmor2809d ago

I just want to point out a flaw in the EA guy's quote. What was the last Ea game in which the single player was "25 hours" long. Dream on Ea guy.

Huwmor2808d ago

Alright, you got me internet. *Hangs head in shame.

radphil2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

Dragon Age is Bioware.

They were a studio before EA.

It's like saying Starcraft is Activision's.

kaveti66162809d ago

This article title is so retarded that I won't dignify it by reading it. EA has made some very good quality single player games such as Dead Space and Mirror's Edge and Mass Effect 2. They were released across multiple platforms and yet the sales were abysmal. If YOU don't want tacked-on MP, good for you. Neither do I! But the fact is, according to sales, most gamers don't even consider buying a game unless it has MP! EA understands that. Rubbish YOU don't want, but it's RUBBISH that a lot of gamers not on this site need to be on the disc or else they're not buying. It's sad, but it's true, and I don't blame EA.
