IGN Reviews Skate: 8.8 for PS3, 9 for 360

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 was the game that really set the franchise apart from anything before it. It's likely that if there's a sequel to skate, it will be the iteration that defines the franchise. But as a brand new IP, based on an idea that could have completely blown up in EA's face, skate is an amazingly complete experience. Those who choose to relax and skate leisurely -- looking for cool lines and taking on the occasional challenge -- will likely find the most enjoyment. Though there are a few technical issues that can become frustrating (curse you load times!), the end product is a blast. When EA announced skate, everyone in the IGN office laughed. They're not laughing anymore. skate's pretty awesome.

Seems like nobody has been able to figure out how to eliminate the jaggies on the PS3...i know because i own both consoles and multiplatform games always look "smoother" around the edges on the 360...this is pissing me off because i'm a sony fan and idk if this is a lack of knowledge issue for developers or if it is that the PS3 cant do anti-aliasing properly, someone enlighten me...so far it looks like the 360 is the console to own from 2005 to 2008, and after that the PS3 will kick in...back on topic i don't think its EA fault cause I've seen the jaggies problem on almost every multiplatform game out so far...sorry if someone disagrees but its true that so far the 360 games are always looking slightly better...hopefully this changes soon (crossing my fingers)

PS. by the way im using HDMI for my PS3 not for my 360...could this be the reason that games look with jaggies??someone explain

Why? AA is good in the 360 version cuz it has 48 picture smearers - pretty stupid system
PS3 has only 24 pixel shaders and 8 texture shaders (5 times more efficient then a pixel shader) + 8 HD rasterizers ....

The reason for this is becuase the RSX isnt too efficient with running AA and HDR at the same time like the 360 is!! One of those need to be sacrificed in the PS3 games!

The PS3 versions are always inferior. This is going to be a major problem when GTA4 gets released. Anyone not owning a next gen system then will be faced with the question of paying $550 (or $650 after the "temporary" price cuts?) for a PS3 or paying $400 for the "better" and "more content" version of GTA4. It's silly that people overlook GTA4 as another coup for Xbox 360 when comparing systems next year; it's going to be another Microsoft blowout against Sony.

The interesting part is that EA has several different teams working on different games. And you think all these teams make the PS3 version worse than the 360 version on purpose? Do you really think that EA wants their PS3 titles to look worse? That's of no use at all for them. If anyones to blame, it's Sony for not instructing developers properly on the PS3's architecture.

Anti-aliasing is basically jaggies you see, or "shimering" effect that we see in PS2. When the PS2 first came out, it scared everyone because ppl thought anti-aliasing shouldn't be on PS2, but when GC came out, it was the same thing, so that was the limitation of last generation that we couldn't get rid of.

But this generation, most games do not have anti-aliasing problems because they can smooth out the edge and textures and such.

The main reasons for third party titles to have jaggies is most likily due to them not optimizing it for the cell's satellite CPUs which takes the load off of the main graphics card and CPU freeing them up for things like anti-aliasing (this was explain to me a while back by a friend, who's a computer engineer in UC Irvine, so if i simplified it incorrectly, forgive me, because i am no programmer and just repeating what he told me).

EA gets rinsed all the time but in truth they aren't the developers, sure they have published some bad games but they also published - Command and Conquer(Newest One), Timesplitters 3, The Sims and up and coming Army of Two.

EA plans on the average consumer not caring about such things. Most people won't even notice a difference between the two versions and they know it. EA puts out a lot of games and cares less about the quality. It's their business model and it works well for them. Recently, they screwed up a 360 game too.

These are two great scores for two great consoles and this game is so much fun I have played the demo dozens of times. THPS is dead and has been since v2. For an old skater with brittle bones this game brings back memories of skating 12 hours a day all summer long. Tony Hawk games never felt like that.

Are Sony fanboys complaining about a 8.8 PS3 game? This game probably is one of the few games with such high rating on the PS3 ofcourse.. the xbox 360 got a better version.. but that's to be expected for most 3rd party games.. but let's not act as if this game sucks.. because the way I see it... EA made a great game for both consoles.
The Xbox 360 version should get a better rating by default.. for the simple part that it comes with more features such as Achivements... though Sony fanboys will say they don't care.. but having it is a plus...

IGN is funny, i've been playing prey on 360 for the past few days. I went to IGN to compare the score to the pc version, and while pc had better graphics(DUH!) both received the same score.

PS3's GPU is Nvidia Geforce7800 base right ?
If so, Geforce 7 series can't work AA and HDR together instead of Xbox360' ATI based GPU and this game seems to be useing HDR function, so can't boost full AA.
From this point of view, PS3 is weaker than Xbox360.
It's just simple hardware's capability issue so there is no help for it.

For all the anti aliasing/jaggies talk.....PS3 owners pay close attention to the Xbox's beloved Forza 2 IGN review summary:

"Jaggies, jaggies, and more jaggies. At times, it appears this is LEGO Forza Motorsport 2. The drab colors and weak art design don't help. 60 fps is welcome though."

Go read it yourself. PS3 can handle anti-aliasing just like Xbox 360. But as stated here, even the Forza people failed to use it correctly for Xbox 360. Lazy developers can take a hike this generation. This will change soon for PS3 multiplatforms!

Have you seen the video comparing? The 360 has better colours dude. PS3 looks washed out on any game it is reviewed on. Is it because of HDMI? Component also has warmer colours compared to VGA. I've tested with my 360 on both and its just clear.

If you're dumb enough to choose jaggies over some slight colour preference YOU say you have... I'd rather tune my HDTV then a bit on the colours and have no SLIDESHOW. Bottleneck 3 is the right name for the machine.

Also funny the games stay better on the 360 in reviews. And that was even before Peter Moore went to EA, before fangirls start crying over that again. BTW its not only EA having that problems. Seen the 9 this game just got, EA doesn't suck on all.

And with Army of Two they'll hit good again! idontcare, even if you own a 360, you talk like your gameshop pays you to talk good about the BS3 and bad about the 360, even when it clearly has advantage over the PS3. Just funny to see it over and over again

Ok, I own both a PS3 and a 360. I love them both. It would be naive to believe that every game released for both systems would be identical. One will always be margianlly better than the other, whether it be in graphics, sound, the way it controls, whatever.

As I understand it, they dropped the PS3 score because of the smoother graphics and slightly better frame rate on the 360. Fair enough. It's a better version, it gets a better score.

But, what about DiRT? That version was better on the PS3 than on the 360 for precisely the same reason! The PS3 had a better frame rate than the 360, and smoother graphics. PS3 version was better, and so surely should get the better score, even if it were an extra 0.2 right?? Wrong! The score stayed the same for both versions. How come?

GRAW2 - 9.1 on the 360, and 8.3 on the PS3 despite the PS3 being the more comprehensive, better version?

Are IGN taking the slight delay that the PS3 has into account? Is that the reason for the lower score? If so, I assume we will see Haze and UT3 getting lower scores on the 360 than on the PS3 then, given that the PS3 versions are being released first? Yeah, right!

I'm seeing this so much in all of the reviews. The PS3 score gets marked down regardless. With all the Xbots and Sony fanboys out there now reviewing these games, I think we need to start taking these reviews with a pinch of salt, and just make our own minds up.

The game isn't released simoultanously. They had months, if not a half year extra to work on the game. If the 360 had that time extra it would have the same or better result then on the 360.

It was that with Oblivion (year extra on PS3 to work with), Dirt (just a bit though) and GRAW 2 I believe (half year extra).

Compare games that are simoultanously released. That's a fair comparisement.

That's because the 360 version was good enough to pass the test and be brought out. There weren't real big framerate issues. Even to be more specific, the thing I experienced with Dirt on my 360 were minor Z-buffer problems. But just slight. I only saw them when I was watching another playing the game, which results in a small line shifting in skies mostly once in a game or so. When you're into the action yourself you don't even notice.

The PS3 obviously had bigger problems at the official release it should have earlier this year. That's why they hold it back, and try to polish it up. Then they don't release in the middle of the summer probably, so hold it back to fall. They even have more time to optimize the whole game, so it can get a tad better then the 360 version that got released when it passed the minimal requirements.

And thats how it works in the game industry my friend.

CAN YOU ANSWER THAT? Because then you'll answer your own question. Because what I state is right. Only games that got months, half year or a year later to the PS3 look a tad better. The rest look worse. I'll bark at, bite and eat PS3 fangirls for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.

Jaggies make the game looks a whole lot worse then having a washed out graphics. I don't want to have a next gen game have jaggies nearly all over the place, it makes it look ugly. I've been playing the demo on my 360 and the game is so much fun, I think I might be picking this up for my 360.

Seems like a setup problem.

I've played both, and they are pretty much the same.

Its also pretty smooth on both systems.

I'd agree the 360 has slightly better aa, but i'd disagree with ign, the ps3 version is more crisp and has anistropic filtering, as opposed to the trilinear filtering used in the 360 version, you only need to look at decent pics to see this.

At the same time, For how long ea have had ps3 devs kits, its not that bad.

One thing i do have to wonder, Are they even using spu's?

Guys, what's the point of arguing here? The 360 will have a great holiday in 2007. MS sales will be impressive. By 2009 the system will be on it's last legs and all will have to shell out more money to buy the 720 (or whatever). MS will completely drop 360 support, come out with Halo 4 and start all over again. The fact is, I'm sorry to tell you 360 owners, MS will get more money out of you in the end then you realize. You can all think you're getting a better deal but you are not. If MS ever has an original idea I'll change my mind about them.
