The year's best console games

RegHardware: "How was your gaming in 2010? Which console games will you remember most when you're through overindulging and it's time to carelessly box up the tangle of Christmas lights and decorations? Which stand-out moments will you recount as you drunkenly belt out Auld Lang Syne and resolve to make these New Year's resolutions your most resolute ever?"

... this year that really stood out.

It's extremely hard for me to choose a #1. For me, it's a toss up between ME2, RDR, Heavy Rain, and GoW3. They all do what they do very well.

ME2 would have definitely have taken the #1 spot if it had retained more of its traditional RPG elements, but regardless it was a great game and I can't wait to play it again on my PS3.

GoW3 was a great end to the story of Kratos (even though his story is being relived on handhelds), but I do feel that the ending lacked. The boss fights were great, the combat options the best yet, but much like ME2 missing its traditional RPG elements, the story of Kratos deserved a much better telling for the last 1/4 of the game as well as a better fight against Zeus (he felt very humanized after defeating the massive gods and titans in the rest of the game).

RDR for me had a lot of bugs, failed to advance the graphics on the PS3, but was a stellar job of an open world western game with a story that was actually fun to play through.

Heavy Rain was just a good experience. It definitely could have had better writing, but I've played it once through and I'm extremely happy with the way the story went (even if my favorite character in the game died at the end). Heavy Rain made me feel attached to my choices more than any other game since Shadow of the Colossus.

My favourite game this year is Red Dead Redemption with GT5 in a very close 2nd position.

I will get a lot of flack for saying this, but i felt GOW3 was a bit of a let down.
While i very much appreciate the game is both a visual and technical tour de force, i felt there were a couple of elements that scuppered my enjoyment. Fixed camera, awkward leaps of faith, sections where i wanted to smash my controller through the TV and cumbersome Harpe jump sections. After i completed the game, it's never been back in my PS3. I do however fully understand the appeal of the game and it is in parts incredible but it just didn't appeal to me.

Perhaps it's partly down to my lack of skills. There you go.

I haven't included Mass Effect 2 in my reckoning as i haven't played it yet.

Castlevania if not mass effect 2 are my best guesses

1. Red Dead Redemption
2. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
3. God of War 3

In a year were the Wii owned every other console out there, saying that japanese gaming is falling is a bit of a fallacy.

Im not comfortable being in an industry where games like RDR and mass effect are considered AAA, despite its blandness and technical bugs.

Mass effect 2 is not bland at all. Now RDR is easily bland.

I could agree with that.

But still, This year was very strong for japanese games, even though the american media seems to try harder and harder to exclude them off.
