PushSquare: Dead Nation on PlayStation 3 Review

PushSquare: "Dead Nation creates an unbelievably tense atmosphere through frustrating methods. The game’s dark, zombie-laden world is enhanced by an incredible lighting engine, but is hindered by a distant camera and an imprecise aiming mechanic. What’s more, for as much tension as the game’s sporadic checkpoints create, their limited nature concludes in frustration and repetition. Dead Nation’s design choices make sense for the context, but they don’t always result in an entertaining experience."

SO you thought it was too hard and too scary?

I guess you gave Demon Soul's a 1/4?

get2sammyb4881d ago

Nope. I think in trying to create tension they forgot about making a fun game.

I still think Dead Nation's FINE, I just think it could have been better. If you love it, then I'm stoked for you.

ChineseDemocracy4881d ago

Honestly, if you take a cautious approach, it's pretty hard to die. As for flanking, you can make out movement in the shadows, so it's not that big of a deal.

You can't expect to just run and gun, you have to use everything at your disposal (as I eventually found out. Mines, grenades, molotovs, and flares are your friends; use them.

Another tip: Upgrade the rifle right away, and always have it charged up, it can penetrate through rows of enemies, and it inflicts heavy damage on the "special" zombies.

Shadow Flare4881d ago

I really disagree with your opinion. The aiming and camera distance is fine, how on earth you think either are faulty I cannot fathom. I've had great fun with the game, and giving it 2/4 is a disgrace

GarandShooter4881d ago

After reading the comments here and on PushSquare I only have one question?

Found anyone that agrees with you yet Sammy? No worries, I won't be the first. This game is FUN and atmospheric.

Dragon_Hiko4881d ago

HaHa, I love your logic there. 'they forgot about making a fun game' means you think the game is not fun, and later you say if anyone loves it thats fine. What your saying is it's ok with you that everyone likes a game that is not fun.

Thats in your mind.

What you should have done, as a reviewer (and something almost all reviewers are seeming to forget) is remained impartial lol. Just because YOU don't like something, doesn't mean it's BAD. And certainly doesn't mean points should be deducted. If I a 25 year old male was asked to review polly princess prissy pants rainbow adventure on DS, do you think I'd rate it down because it was a bit kiddy? Because I felt it was a little too dumb for me?

ThanatosDMC4881d ago (Edited 4881d ago )

That's why there's a "Braindead" difficulty for these types of people. Then they complain? Weird cuz they must really really suck. The zombies dont even attack you as much and are all slower not to mention an unupgraded rifle can kill normal zombies with one hit and im not talking about the cannon fodder that appear in hoards when summoned by that big red thing.

For those who think Normal mode is too easy. Start in Grim first. You get a lot more point that way and screw the SMG. Max rifle and shotty first.

It would be nice if it had voice chat support..

Other than that I think the game is just fine. Good, not great, but definitely worth the asking price.

Pedobear Rocks4881d ago

It will in a patch very soon

krisq4881d ago

Yep, lack of voice chat is my only gripe.

Trebius4881d ago

Dude, this game is SO WORTH the money. I love it, the leaderboards are a nice touch as well, Its just a FUN game. If you suck at it like the writer, then you wont enjoy it so much.

JUDALATION4881d ago

This game is soo much better than this reviewer gave it credit for... And for 15 dollars its the BEST game on PSN... iT HAS CO OP and a patch for co op chat has already been available... the story is good enough to make you care and the fun rush of whiping out crowds of zombies that jump out of nowhere is soo fuckin awesome... THIS GAME IS A 9/10 and most reviews are 9 plus...

What is with people and check points, its like they expect a check point after every few feet. Like how people complain about dead risings save system, it was just fine.

Makes me wonder what these people would of done playing Resident Evil back when you had ribbons and could actually run out of saves. Or NES games where if you run out lives after playing for days you had to start over.

GarandShooter4881d ago

Aaah, Resident Evil and typewriter ribbons...such great memories.

mac_sparrow4881d ago

Overall I find that games have become easier. I think it's the combination of scripted events, regenerating health and auto saving.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of my favourite ever games have one if not all of these features, but sometimes a game like Demon's Souls is a refreshing change.

Bubble up.

Alcohog4881d ago

The pacing is perfect. So much fun. My wife and I played this until 4am this morning.

bullswar4881d ago

So does everybody ... gamer wifes are awesome.

mac_sparrow4881d ago

@bullswar

Cool, just have to marry my fiancée to make her awesome then. I shall tell her today that at present she is merely better than average. :P

FunAndGun4881d ago

awww, someone can't use a controller and the game is too hard.

It's only "FINE" because your skills are only FINE. Step your game up!

The VR version of Stardust is an incredible experience, even for those that get VR sickness, the game gives you the feeling of floating in the vastness of space, but the motion sickness is removed, its colorful, flashy, and amazing to play

IBD Podcast #13 - Housemarque and mastering the twin-stick shooter

Housemarque is famed for its downloadable console games including Super Stardust, Dead Nation, Alienation, PS4 launch title Resogun and now Nex Machina. The veteran Finnish developer has made a name for itself crafting, precise, polished, technically accomplished and visually striking titles in publishing partnership with Sony.

With its latest title, Nex Machina, launching for both PS4 and PC, Housemarque is taking its first step into self-publishing. Working in collaboration with pioneering developer Eugene Jarvis, who created arcade classics such as Defender, Robotron: 2084 and Smash TV, Nex Machina represents both a refinement and evolution of Housemarque's design principles, as well as an opportunity for the developer to directly benefit from establishing and retaining its own IP.

Here, Housemarque CEO Ilari Kuittinen and head of publishing Mikael Haveri discuss how the decision to self-publish has led to greater autonomy, a collaboration with Eugene Jarvis and how a game titled "Death Machine" could mean a new lease of life for the company.
