Sony: PlayStation Move reaches 4.1 million in worldwide sales

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that PlayStation Move has reached over 4.1 million units sold worldwide.

Update:

Update: There seems to be some confusion as to whether this figure represents the number of Moves actually purchased by consumers or sold to retailers. Though the U.S. press release revealing the sales posted after the jump explicitly says "sold," the Japanese press release mentions "the quantity delivered to the dealer" in a footnote. We've contacted Sony for clarification.

Update 2: A Sony representative explained that the 4.1 million actually represents Move units shipped to stores, adding "While we don't disclose our exact sell-through number, the key is that our retailers continue to ask for more Move units and are taking every unit we can supply them with based on their sales." Which, you know, would have been a cool thing to put in that press release, we think.

The story is too old to be commented.

This is crazy. And I thought Kinect's 2+ million was a milestone achievement. How is this sort of sales even possible?

Even if that were the case, it puts Move directly on par with Kinect's sales. So really, we're not seeing as much of a gap as many people would have been led to believe in the first place.

Are they really counting Move sales as the controller with the light on the end?

Pirateogta2455d ago (Edited 2455d ago )

@thereaperson

Move came out in September, while Kinect came out in November. There's the difference.

2.5 million Kinect units sold = 2.5 million unique Kinect users in 1 month.
4.1 million Move units sold = approx. 2 to 2.5 million unique Move users in 2.5 months.

raztad2455d ago

Nice numbers. Congrats to Sony. Fvk Pachter.

MOVE is a very nice piece of tech. MAg+MOVE=win. BTW, there is a PSN RTS called Swords and Soldiers. It is MOVE compatible and very fun, give it a try.

visualb2455d ago (Edited 2455d ago )

well thereapersson

I believe Move and Kinect (although Move consists of multiple parts thus harder to keep track of, i know for sure the nunchuck does not count) will sell equally / similar numbers

the big message from this is:

both are a huge success. Motion gaming on our beloved HD consoles is here to stay.

it worked...=P thanks a lot nintendo xP

Wow my post was considered trolling for answering a question someone asked? Glad to see having a logical discussion with someone is now considered trolling.

I'll start posting more troll comments like this, and maybe my comments will last.

"Microsoft just pooped in they pants lol jk.

Great sales for Move and Sony didn't need to spend 500 million for advertising. Word of mouth helped a lot."

Mr_Bun2455d ago

I'm still trying to figure out what Shadow_Fox said to get hit with trolling. Unless it was just a mistake, it is looking like Odion is getting pretty liberal with the trolling label

*waits for my comment to get labeled as well*

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and simply say this, Kinect sold 2.5 million in 25 days, averaging 100 000 units per day.
Move has sold 4.1 million units in 75 days(17 september - ) averaging 54667
Make of it what you will

So funny how all of a sudden headstarts count now.

For the people, who have trouble to follow a link.

The figure applies to the complete Move bundle, which packs the remote itself and a PlayStation Eye camera, and excludes sales of standalone remotes or Eyes.

Those saying that the Move requires two or more controllers for two or more players need to read the article a little more closely.

“The figure applies to the complete Move bundle, which packs the remote itself and a PlayStation Eye camera, and excludes sales of standalone remotes or Eyes.”

If that sentence wasn’t in the original article here on this site, I apologize because I can’t read the article here. I keep getting an error message. I had to read it here:

@ thereapersson ~ "This is crazy. And I thought Kinect's 2+ million was a milestone achievement. How is this sort of sales even possible?"

Probably for a few different reasons (along with some added info included)

1) There are many people who already have the PS Eye
2) Which in turn means they only have to buy a single PS Move to experience Accurate Motion Control
3) The cost of said PS Move is MUCH cheaper than the cost of it's competitor
4) Even if one doesn't have a PS Eye the Bundle is still cheaper @ only $99
5) The fact that the PlayStation has over 20 in house devs that will support Casual along with Core gamers (hard or regular) tells them they will get more for their money and quality to boot!
6) The PS Move did great sales BEFORE Black Friday and with the help of it now it has gone up ;P
7) And Christmas isn't even here yet

I have to add that the 500 Million that MS has coffered for Kinect includes much more giveaways in an attempt to flood the market to give a false sense of penetration/success. Yes the same could be said about the PS Move and Sony's promo's but you don't see or hear any where near as much as MS's adverts/giveaways. Hence MS's base is "fluffed up" while still having a smaller installed/sold base.

Whether you like MS or not the fact is people remember what the 360 has done to burn bridges (so to say), because of it's consistent major manufacturing problems. And I honestly I wouldn't doubt that between the casual aspect of it in conjunction with peoples trepidation with backing/wasting hard earned cash on something that has a clear gimmicky aspect within it that it is having a drastic affect on it's sales.

If you stand back with an open mind and a willingness to comprehend the situation from different angles, the future of Xbox doesn't seem as strong as many ignorant posters here on N4G (all sides) that incessantly spam comments every day with nothing more than weakly supported argumentative & baseless information.

Biggest2455d ago

Wow. I would imagine that the total sales are even higher then. Although, I haven't seen a stand alone Move remote since the first day. I think they're still selling them. lol

AnointedD2455d ago

whats really funny is how headstarts suddenly don't count.

raztad2455d ago

@Anointed

Scratch the whole Kinect vs MOVE war bullsh!t. I think people is happy with MOVE good sales. Many predicted it would flop but clearly it didnt. Probably it surpassed Sonys own expectations by far.

More sales = more software support = big win for gamers and Sony.

TheBlackSmoke2455d ago (Edited 2455d ago )

But the difference is, no PS3 owner is acting like the headstart never happened.

The main point is that the Move which was supposed to be a "flop" and "forgotten once kinect launches" has sold amazingly considering the low impact advertising campaign.

Lifendz2455d ago

Color me surprised. That motion controller market is really substantial. Best thing about Sony and MS launching their respective motion devices is that it'll probably extend the life of their current consoles.

Fat Bastard2455d ago

If you want to divide move's sales by 2 to account for people buying multiple, why don't we do that to xbox 360 consoles sold? I have only bought 1, but many friends I have who got the RROD have gone out and purchased a second, third, and maybe even fourth new machine. We don't take this into account when we consider consoles sold though do we?

Mizz_mai2455d ago

And without any gimmicks......well done :)

THE BIAS2455d ago

Michael Pachter is a massive pig's arse

Black-Helghast2455d ago

@Shadow_Fox

How much is the kinect? 150$

How much is 2 Playstation moves? 100$

Even if you buy two moves, 1 kinect is more expensive.

anh_duong2455d ago

you guys spend too much of your valuable life mass debating

thesummerofgeorge2455d ago

Selling way better than I thought...

Also, It seems like the mods are going trigger happy with the flagging of comments for "trolling" etc... Clearly it's not the users voting that way. What would we do without the firm hand of the mods to keep us in line?

The only question left is whether or not this includes Black Friday sales or the 360gig PS3 Move bundles for $400. We know the press release was issued today: November 30th, 2010. But I doubt this includes the last week of sales.

Boody-Bandit2455d ago

Can someone, anyone, read my post above and tell me how it was marked as trolling? WTF is happening to this site?

Seriously is a moderator off his meds?

DaTruth2455d ago

Sony only counts console sales as sold through. All peripherals are tallied as shipped because PS3 only makes money when it is in a customer's home, while games and peripherals make money for shareholders right off the back!

HolyOrangeCows2455d ago

Move is beating the Kinect in sales.
Here come the hypocrites that said "Stop using release date gaps as an 'excuse' for total sales being lower"

somerandomdude2455d ago

Here comes the holiday sales spike ...... and a sense of dread for fanboys; whoever wins on the holidays usually wins for the next year or so.

Lightsaber2455d ago (Edited 2455d ago )

That comes out to about 500k sold total. The move require that you buy 7 different pieces. $ony is using this to inflate their number to make it seem like the move is actually saling. If MS had of use the same set up with the kinect it would of sold over 17 million already

lets not forget $ony spent over 4 billion on advertising the move

HolyOrangeCows2455d ago

You're an awful troll. So full of facetious info.

First of all, you only need ONE piece of hardware to play the Move with the PS Eye, and it's all they are counting in their numbers; the Move controller. You can use the DS3 with it for the few titles that use the navigation controller.

"lets not forget $ony spent over 4 billion on advertising the move "
That was confirmed complete BS. No actual source confirms or even has a legitimate claim to it.

suckerpunch2455d ago

sony's is lying. inflating sales again. nobody cares about move. kinect sells 1 unit per group, it doesn't matter if playstation move sells 2, 3, or 4 units per person, kinect outsells it based on hype alone (quality is subjective) already. the number doesn't add up. VG chartz is more reliable.

how suspicious that sony release its move sales shortly after MS. coward ism ? and BS.
