GameRevolver.com gives a list of the greatest gaming soundtracks ever created.
"Looking back over the years, games have been evolving in all areas, from graphics, to game play to audio. We got to thinking..."
What makes this list laughable in my opinion is the fact that the Final Fantasy VI soundtrack was nowhere to be found, when I consider it to be at least in the top 3. Anyone can make these lists though.
was considered, but if you read the first paragraph, this list is composed of the most memorable. Most gamers are more familiar with VII than the latter. It should get an honorable mention though.
That one song, the main theme song I will remember for the rest of my life.
FFVII pretty much made FF mainstream and was the first FF for a lot of gamers today so with that said, I'll agree that its soundtrack would be more memorable. But damn, FFVI's soundtrack is just on a whole other level in terms of modern music. I consider Nobuo Uematsu to be up there w/ all the great composers.
Nobuo Uematsu is a great composer. I liked his work in Ehrgeiz as well as his new stuff in Blue Dragon (From what I have heard so far)
I'm a huge Halo fan.. and the music does sound great, but it definitely doesn't deserve to be ranked first on that list.
I think ff7 should be top. Before I clicked the link I already guessed what number 1 would be. Still, each to their own I suppose.
Someone should give this guy a Metal Gear Solid OST.
And no Shenmue soundtrack? This list a no-no.
I agree about Shenmue. Every room had different music. My favorite is the Tomato Store.
I mean Vice City single handedly brought back 80's clothes and music to the mainsteam. I can't remember how many times I heard A Flock of Seagulls "I Ran" or Corey Harts "Sunglasses at Night" on the radio for like 2 years after that game.
Pretty much every squaresoft game ever created has a better score than Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, you should be thankful it's even on the list at all..
I have 70-80 game soundtrack CDs, maybe even more, (all orchestration or instrumental -- no pop music, rock-and-roll or oldie craps for me.)
Halo 3 is near the top, but not #1.
On the other hand, neither Final Fantasy (any of them) nor MGS deserves to be #1.
Halo 2. Halo 3 does not compare to the theme of Halo 2 imo
so what is your number 1?
i like system shock 2 :)))
Halo i think has one of the best soundtracks...not of big fan of the Halo 2 one
but from the sounds of it Halo 3 will best the previous two
it definitely deserves a place on that countdown, if not #1...Super Mario will always remain near and dear...it was my first memorable video game music...I think I need a tissue...lol...
I think the guy who made this list is getting game theme songs and actual game soundtracks confused. I mean games that actually have a bunch of memorable tunes other than the main theme song. I think some other soundtracks have more of an impact then the intro theme of Halo. Even at on of the conventions this year, maybe E3, when the presentation opened up with the Halo theme..I'm sure alot of gamers were saying "ok ok enough with that damn song, just show us the game". Maybe I'm just burnt out on that song, but I still think some other game music is better. I would even put the original Sonic games on Sega Genesis on this list over Road Rash 3D
Sonic 2 as well...I agree man...and Mario 3! and Contra!
Rage Racer for the PS1 was phuckin awesome. Best part was you could pop in the disk in any CD player and you could listen to the tracks. Ahh the good old days.
Oh yeahhhh I forgot about Rage Racer. That game had an awesome soundtrack and I liked how you could customize the icon on your car. I made the yellow Wutang W on mine and made the car all black...ah the good ol' days.
Halo (H2 is essentially Halo--updated with more instruments)
BioShock (Brilliant use of reproduced period music)
Tales of Symphonia
Honorable mention: Blue Dragon
Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition.
Seriously! Why the hell weren't any of the Silent Hill games mentioned? Those soundtracks are amazing, if not somewhat of a niche appeal; Akira Yamaoka is a genius.
Seriously, Halo 2 on top? Now that's a mouthful.
Does "Shadow of the Colossus" ring a freacking bell?
but not too many people experienced it...it's like Michael Jackson's Thriller...it might not be the best 9 songs ever created, but who hasn't heard it, and can't find some sort of connection with them, ya know?
halo 2 ? what the fck is that ?
best soundtrack ....mitsuda's spine-tingling melodies in CHRONO CROSS!!
honourable mention ...harry gregson williams' mgs3 theme......PERIOD.
halo2 doesnt EVEN come close to these classic games ....but i guess this list was compiled by a retarded microsoft fanboy...nuff said.......halo2 first place.....hhmmpphh....dont make me fckin laugh ....
edit : did i mention okami ?
The funny part about this comment is that 90% of the articles written on the site are about the PS3. The truth is, that GameRevolver is fan based, and its articles cater to all systems. I (steriotyp) own all 3 next gen consoles, not to mention each console for the last decade and a half. To each system its own. They all have great games and carr their own appeal. Make sure you look past the cover.
most memorable? One winged Angel should have sealed the deal for FF7 to grab the #1 spot IMO
but these list's are just fan service anyway...to each his own
it's just one man's list anyway...I'd say the original Mario...
Are you kidding me? Halo beats out Kingdom Hearts, Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy...AND SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS???
ARE THEY DRUNK???
NOTHING...NOTHING BEATS SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS!!!
HALO? WTF? hell no. compsred to final fantasy.....and as leon pointed out SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS. this list is laughable at best.
You be gettin' bubbles!
My personal top 3 would have been FFVIII, MGS2 and Planescape Torment.
I like that one broken record of the XTURDS whining about their 360's blowing up left and right. That's my greatest soundtrack of all time...It brings a smile right to my face....AhAHAHA
It goes like this...
"Waaaaah, no more achievements, waaaaaah WTF.....RROD, waaaaah!"
Speaking strictly in terms of being memorable, there are countless Megaman tunes ingrained into my head that will probably never go away. The old Megaman tunes are EXTREMELY catchy.
Not only were so many Mega Man tunes so memorable, they REALLY set the stage well.
The Mega Man X Collection should have been #1. Not only were most of the tunes memorable, but they were varied, and no game, ever, has set the mood for stages quite as well.
None of that happy-go-lucky music that's in games right now.
Dang it, right now, the music from when you fight Dynamo in MMX5 is stuck in my head now!
"Looking back over the years, games have been evolving in all areas, from graphics, to game play to audio. We got to thinking; numerous articles have been done on game play and graphics and the like, but what about the audio? Whether you notice it or not, the musical score, even its simplest form, has had one of the most dominant impacts on gamers. It is because of the soundtracks lack of attention that we decided to bring you a nice list of some of the most memorable soundtracks to date. This has everything original midi’s, to awesome compilations to complete symphony ensembles. There is no stone left unturned here and anything goes, so with that in mind, here is our top 12 gaming soundtracks of all time."
this is a compilation of the tunes that stand out to the majority of gaming audiences. Although Sonic was legendary, The soundtrack was not the key component and for the life of me, I couldn't humm it if I tried without playing it again.
Chrono Cross is great, and falls in line with Final Fantasy. But this list is about what gamers will recognize and relate to. We only gave 12, and the fact is that there are hundreds of games that trigger memories. Please feel free to create an account on GameRevolver.com and leave your comments on the article. We would love to hear your Top gaming soundtracks.
And why is halo 2 number one it shouldn't even be on it put my brother's to sleep and this guy needs to stop playing....wait your not
Such an idiot
1)Donkey Kong 64
2)Super Mario Bros(True Classic)
3)Parappa The Rapper
Actually, I'd put Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest higher than Donkey Kong 64.
what about street fighter turbo and tetris everybody knows this
I am a HUGE halo fan!! but...
I have never found the music any good :S always found it very thin texture wise...and rather er lazy and crap. MGS should be in there! by far the best!
shadow of the colossus, metal gear solid 1, 2 + 3, okami, GTA VC + SA, what else?
There should of been an MGS on there.
Oh and Super Mario World definetly deserves to be on there, and Chrono Trigger.
And FF7 defo beats Halo 2. FF7 constantly has music adding to the atmosphere in the game whereas Halo 2 just now and again has a bit of music kick in which makes it seem kinda odd.
halo 2 in 1º .. yeahh right lol maybe shadow of colossus , ico , final fantasy 6,7,10, Metal gear solid .... but Halo 2 ???? lol
well I dont know about MGS, I love the theme, but the rest is kind of forgetable, not in a bad way though it has the espionage vibe.
BUT Snake Eater by cynthia harrell is one of my faves and Calling to the night is AMAZING
calling to the night to various MGS clips
There is NO WAY Halo 2 deserves the top spot. Original scores from all the following games are WAY BETTER!
Metal Gear Solid
Um Jammer Lammy
Donkey Kong Country series
Zone of the Enders Series
God of War Series
The list goes on and on. At least they put a few good ones on the list. I'm so sick of American-centric gaming sites that flaunt all things Halo. It is so frustrating.
I'd welcome anyone who can honestly argue that the score of Halo 2 has had a bigger cultural influence than that of Super Mario Bros. Simply no way that is possible.
I know everybody's List is different.
I'm very much into Video Game Original Soundtracks ala..Final Fantasy Series, Breath of Fire V, Legend Of Zelda, Castlevania: Symphony of The Night, Chrono Trigger.
Some japanese artist such as,
Nobuo Uematsu (my fav FF series),
Michiru Yamane (CastileVania:SOTN)
Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger),
Hideaki Kobayashi (Phantasy Star Online),
Koji Kondo (Legend of Zelda),
Hitoshi Sakimoto (Breath of Fire)
Martin O' Donnell (Halo 2)
Junichi Nakatsuru (Soul Caliber)
I'm a VGame music Junkie. Though mostly, I dabble into RPG music for some reason. They leave a lasting impression with me, since RPG's really pull you in, as far as the story, time, place, and the environments. The music is important as it creates the atmosphere and emotions. I can go back to old-school (Actraiser music).. and others. Just like Music it's hard to pick favorites.
With what is on this list
1. Final Fantasy VII, IX, X(so many)
2. Legend of Zelda, N64 titles
4. Grand Theft Auto:Vice City (I'm 80's baby)
5. Actraiser (old-school)
6. Donkey Kong Country
7. Streets of Rage 2(Dreamer track)
8. Jet Set Radio:Future
9. Battle Arena Toshinden (Mondo's Stage)
10. Phantasy Star Online(Opening Theme ~The Whole New World)
11. Chrono Cross ("The girl who stole the stars", best melodic track you'll ever hear)
12. Soul Caliber 1, 2 (Duelists, Eternal Struggle)
13. Guilty Gear series(Great Hard rock tracks)
14. Sonic the Hedgehog 3(Icecap zone act 1/2, Casino)
15. Breathe Of Fire series
I'll stop here..anybody into trading music OST's & OCremixes, I'm me, also this is a great site for VGame Music lovers. I'm sure I have missed some but some of these games really got me hooked on VG Music.
hell yeah Guilty Gears soundtrack is awesome!
my fave is Fuuga or however its spelled, Angi's theme
is (Blue Water, Blue Sky), that fits the game perfect.
Year Guilty Gear straight out Rocks..Literally.
Halo's Theme matches it perfectly.
As well as my fav "HEAVY PRICE PAID", everytime I hear that, it puts me in that mood for multi-player.
It gives you that feeling of the whole reason of the fight and why you must finish it this Sep 25th.
bubble for you...awesome...
halo soundtrack doesn't go with the game play,i havent play the game in years but all i can rememeber is that it reminds me of choir/church etc the score doesnt get you involved in the game like metal gear......metal gear No.1
I dunno, I thought the Gabriel Knight theme was pretty catchy...
My list, just top 5, and I'm going to balance good and memorable.
5. Fire Emblem (GBA)
The music in this game is varied and manages to set the mood well when most characters enter. It encourages the player to feel for the characters when something happens, and it rarely gets annoying unless you're trying to abuse an arena. Personally, I found myself playing though the game multiple times after I won with every character on every difficulty, just to unlock some secret levels I missed to get all the music!
4. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
A game based so heavily on music should have good music, and Zelda delivered. From the different areas to the simple tunes on your ocarina, Zelda left very little to be desired in any of its tunes.
3. Pokemon Red/Blue/Green (GB)
The oldest pokemon had the best music. Think about this, if you ever played one of these versions and battled all the legends and made it though your rival, do you still remember the music? I know I do, and it still brings back memories of Zapdos avoiding all those pokeballs, while asleep! Ah, any music you can both remember and brings back memories...
2. Super Mario Bros. (NES)
There is no one alive that can't make little noises to the Mario theme, and only a few less can't do the pipe noise and do the underground music. There's just something about that origional Mario that was really amazing, and the primitive, but memorable and plesant music is no different.
1. Mega Man X Collection (multiple)
Mega Man music was always good, but remixed tunes for memorable games anyway, and the first 6 X's on one game, wow! Mega Man sets the mood for any given stage, but at no point is it cheesy. Often, if you think of music from a stage, you can't help but to picture the stage, which just goes to show how great the Mega Man music was.
It's very deserving in that position.
But i think all the gta-ddr-guitar hero's should be removed since it's not a soundtrack to the game, but just a compilation cd. KI should be on that list same with LOZ:OOT.
Final fantasy 7 should be number 1 no questions ask'd played halo many a time it simply doesnt compare to final fantasy 7.
