The Problem With Achievements

Game Podunker Natetodamax writes, "I am somewhat of an achievement whore. Or I was. Or maybe I still am. I’m not so sure. Either way, when Microsoft introduced the world to the Xbox 360 in 2005, they unknowingly (or knowingly?) introduced a new addiction to the gaming population. That addiction is the stupidly simple concept of achievements. By playing games, people can get rewarded for doing certain things such as beating a level on hard or getting X number of kills with a particular weapon. The reward itself is nothing but a set number of points that adds to the ever growing pile of useless Achievements Could Be More points known as a Gamerscore. The question here is why this system leads many people to be labeled as achievement whores..."

I think achievements/trophies should be used to improve the gamer, and for proper goal setting. Not for bragging rights.

I_Like_Good_Games2763d ago (Edited 2763d ago )

It only works both ways. And so what if there are bragging rights?

Feeling that you're better than somebody else, no matter how minuscule that superiority may be... IS a normal and healthy human quality.

Close_Second2763d ago

Girl Guides and Boy Scouts earn badges, could that be considered the same thing?

ssj2gohan832763d ago (Edited 2763d ago )

There are people out there who think that bragging about achievements/trophies are a waste of time. I for one don't care if someone was able to get all of the trophies in Gundemonium Recollection, or Demons Soul's, for example. I don't give rats ass, and neither should anyone else. The only thing I care about if I am able to get the trophies for myself and become a better gamer because of it.

The only reason why MS released an achievements type system, system wide is for those who whore out their score by purchasing as many games as possible, and beating them, mainly the easy ones, and it has absolutely no bearing on what type of gamer they are. Take a look at those very same profiles and see what type of games they are playing to reach such a score, and you'll see what I mean.

In a way they are similar, and lot of those badges actually help those who achieved them become a better person. Much in the same way some game achievements help you become a better gamer.

I think its pretty brilliant MS started the Achievements. I don't do it to brag or anything, but its sure is a smart way to extend some play time with games.

Gawdl3y2763d ago (Edited 2763d ago )

Microsoft didn't start achievements in video games, Valve (Steam) did.

I do like the addition though. Gives me something to play towards.

awiseman2763d ago

Funny how i always see anti-achievment articles all the time yet all i see are pro-trophy articles....consideribng they are a fundamentally identical concept...its pretty ibvious whats happening here.

manumit2764d ago

haha agreed man, but it will never happen. Avatar awards are a fun thing to play for but sometimes you'll put stupid Sh!t (like a Fable 3 crown) on your avatar for bragging rights. AAHHHH when will it end?!

AwakenTheTaco2763d ago

i did that with carters helmet from reach. its not a bad concept. just in retrospect sometimes these achievements are a waste of time....more playing games for achievements than actually enjoying the game.

I_Like_Good_Games2763d ago (Edited 2763d ago )

I like them because it gives you a reason to pass a game 100%.

Because there's not too many games nowadays that will by themselves make me wanna do that.

Zachmo1822763d ago

I could care less for achievements. I just get them by playing through and if i get one well ok cool if i dont i could care less.

Pirateogta2763d ago

That's strange. Your comment implies that you COULDN'T care less about achievements, but you say you COULD care less. I'm baffled!

Nitrowolf22763d ago

ever heard of an idiomatic expressions?

ThatArtGuy2763d ago

Sure. When they're used correctly.

Zachmo1822763d ago (Edited 2763d ago )

Does this sound better?

I couldn't care less about achievements. If i get one ok cool. If i don't well oh well doesn't affect me.

Sorry i wasn't aware that i was in English class... I wasn't aware that i had to say it the right was to get my point across.

olLANDSHARKlo2763d ago

Zachmo I think you hit a nerve with him (Pirate)check out his gamerscore a whopping 64,050, so he cares and can't understand why you don't have a life, like him.

'could care less' and 'couldn't care less' mean 2 entirely different things. stop contributing to the dumbing down of America.

which brings me to the blog in question - written by a [email protected] always pains me to see n4gers seriously debating something so poorly written.

lol "Assigning achievements to online multiplayer is practically a death sentence for that part of the game." wtf does that even mean?? he never explains it.

VladimirK2763d ago

It kills online when people are more concerned with getting their achievements than playing the game.

Dsnyder2763d ago

The problem with achievements is that it killed gameshark and action replay. They should just make it to where trophies are disabled when you do that. That way I can have infinite everything just like the ps2 days.

Nitrowolf22763d ago

no, cause i don't think companies that built them really would care. I think it's just not as easy now as it was before considering simple updates can just block them.
