The five most overhyped tech products of 2010‎

TechRepublic: The pace of innovation in the technology industry quickened again in 2010, after stumbling momentarily in 2009 because of the global recession. The most potent sign of the rebound was the steady stream of new products, new technologies, and new ideas that pushed the previous boundaries and rethought the status quo.

Of course, innovation means taking risks and some of them — including some the most widely publicized — turn out to duds. And, even some of the most successful new products get overhyped and oversold.

That’s the subject of this week’s Monday morning editorial: the most overhyped products of 2010. Here’s my list.

Agrees with the list but They were still the major important stuff that came out in 2010. 3DTV specially was important.

Just waiting for the early adoption tax on 3DTVs to go down, I think it will be in my range in a few months.

I feel Kinect was not hyped much at all because it's not getting hyped by casual gamers because they don't visit sites like these and hardcore gamers didn't hype it up either because they don't care about it.

If anything Kinect would the most under hyped. The only people that hyped it was MS.

kinect was being hyped since it was annouced (aka project natal)

where have you been?

Like I said before, imo, if a product has a article written about it having features that most people don't know about, then the product isn't overhyped. Its all in the wording. Most things are hyped, if not, then how will people know about it. The word "overhyped" is something I personally attach to situations where someone is saying one thing is better than the other. And its all subjective if you really think about it.

Active Reload2790d ago (Edited 2790d ago )

If anyone can locate a list for each item or an article with the title "10 things you didn't know about..." then no, I don't think these products were overhyped. Whichever one doesn't have a "10 things you didn't know about..." article, then that product was overhyped. IMO

Yeah these are all hyped. But tech is a touch cookie to sell.

The iPad though cleaned house quick. I think it still the #1 tech toy for Christmas too. I kind of want one, but I keep telling myself it's just a glorified iPhone. Anyone have any real insite on the difference and what the iPad is best used for.

forcefullpower2790d ago (Edited 2790d ago )

Cant wait for an ipad but i am waiting for Second generation of it. I dont generally buy first gen Apple products.

Also him saying that people think its a full laptop replacement is not true no one thinks that its a laptop replacement.

Anon19742790d ago

That's not true. Everyone is touting the Ipad as a laptop replacement. Even apple is marketing the Ipad's productivity potential. It's not going to happen, but saying that no one was viewing these as a laptop replacement is simply incorrect. In fact, google "Ipad laptop replacement" and you'll find literally hundreds of articles examining the Ipad as a laptop replacement.

Define 'overhype' and tell me why an actual word that exists can't be used instead of it?

Or is it 'addicting' to make up words that don't exist now?

Nineball21122790d ago (Edited 2790d ago )

To promote or publicize to excess: Promoters grossly overhyped the movie.

So, obviously the word exists. It may be slang, but it's still a valid term.

MGRogue20172790d ago (Edited 2790d ago )

Microsoft's Kinect.

'Nuff said.

Hell yeah.. I went there. >:)

While I agree with you about Kinect.. No need to act like a 5 year old little kid about it. Really

As far as Google TV goes, I would love to see what Google TV could bring to the PS3. Especially since most of the things it advertises the PS3 can already do. Netflix, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Web browsing, Vudu (content on demand), Pandora, Hulu, View photos and video can all be done on PS3 already.

@deadreckoning Well, Kinect is more of an idea that the tech fails to live up to. People think about controller free gaming and they have certain standards of what that should be. Me personally, I feel that it works well for the simplistic games that are currently out for it but that is because they are so simple. I have played it and I did think it was fun. I just think it needs to be more advanced and pick up on things like wrist movement and finger movement and at faster speeds to be able to do more complex games. My opinion I guess, I definitely don't speak for every one.

soundslike2790d ago

the answer is most likely nothing

its just a substitute for people who don't have a tv within VGA/DVI cable reach of their computer/laptop or are just too lazy/dumb to do it.

What I would like to see for this new streaming content market is client side filters. Have options like anti-aliasing, motion blurs, bloom, v-sync built into the tv, or for ps3 the software. That way if your connection isn't perfect or you are watching something with a lower resolution you can try and spice it up a bit.

deadreckoning6662790d ago (Edited 2790d ago )

How is Kinect overhyped? It performed exactly what it set out to do as far as controller free gaming is concerned. If you played it you would understand that, whether the games appeal to you or not.

InvaderZim2790d ago

I have to disagree with you Dead. Kinect did NOT do eveything it was hyped to do. For example: hardcore gaming. Before it was released, MS repeatedly told everyone (media) that Kinect was for ALL types of gamers. They lied. Now I know it is still a little early to be making these conclusions but come on. You and I both know what crowd MS is aiming for... Anyway I just wanted to let you know why I disagreed. I don't "click and run."

Pillville2790d ago (Edited 2790d ago )

"Listen to Oprah and Ellen as they tell you how cool it is"

If they had advertised it as simply "controller free gaming, a new way to play", it would not have been over-hyped.

Over-hyping is more about the marketing than the actual product.

theafroman2790d ago

pretty much true only the ipad and googletv seems to be living up to expectations heh
