Kinect Hacked to Play Super Mario Bros.

By taking his physical movements and converting them into running and jumping movements for Mario, he’s managed to create the first controller-free version of the game that I’ve seen. See it in action in the video clip below. Stick around long enough, and you might witness Yankeyan playing a little Super Mario Bros. 2 & 3 as well.

not the most accurate thing out there and you wont be breaking any score or time records with it, but these hacks that ppl are coming out with are real sweet...with ms paying 500mil for advertising, i wonder if they would attempt to buy some of these or even hire some of the hacker for some sort of kinect specific dev team like 343 is for the halo franchise

Eamon4898d ago

I thought 343 industries were made of ex-Bungie employees?

hennessey864898d ago

bungie, pandemic, infinity ward and a few others

Chaos694898d ago

They even have a couple of people that once worked for NASA like Corine Yu. I'm really excited to see what they can do.

dragonelite4898d ago

This shit is probably open source so free to pick off the net.

Malicious4898d ago

The only good 360 is a hacked 360. I guess the same could be said about Kinect.

SixZeroFour4898d ago

technically anything hacked is usually "better" than the original, or else there wouldnt be a reason to hack the product

Eamon4898d ago

Yep, an open platform is always better than a closed one.

Baka-akaB4898d ago (Edited 4898d ago )

well they aint often hacked to make them better , aside from a minority of individuals , they are to run free softwares or games .

Still kudos to the kinect ones so far . They do looks great and fun

frostyhat1234897d ago

@Eamon
Thats were apple went wrong!

VINNIEPAZ4898d ago (Edited 4898d ago )

@PirateThom

"This is not a hardcore game nor does it define a hardcore game.

This could be where the confusion lies. Hardcore =/= violent"

Well i guess the same could be said the other way around. I'm kinda sick of all this "casual" "hardcore" BS. If the game is fun then just PLAY it.

Stealth20k4898d ago

looks really stupid and broken

Eamon4898d ago (Edited 4898d ago )

I suppose you can come up with a better algorithm-oh wait!

Stealth20k4898d ago

and who cares it doesnt have any gamign application

kinect basicall doesnt work with games not casual

Eamon4898d ago

This is called a tech demo, dumbass.

8-bit4898d ago (Edited 4898d ago )

I agree, Kinect has more of a PC app use than a gaming use. Kinect's tech is here to stay but it's future doesn't lie in the gaming industry. Games are WAY too limited. Also it doesn't in any way improve over the standard controller. Nothing is as quick and accurate as a button.

ArmrdChaos4897d ago (Edited 4897d ago )

So when they release the hybrid games that use the controller with Kinect you won't have a problem? Or are you going to use the tired war cry "but but you are supposed to be the controller" to save your argument?

Who the hell gets to decide what is hardcore and what isn't?

yippiechicken4897d ago

Probably true, but that doesn't automatically make it the best choice for every type of game. My family and I have been playing A LOT of Kinect Adventures and Kinect Sports the last week and a half and I can't think of one game that would play better with a standard controller. In fact, I think they would be boring as hell being played with a controller. Half of the fun of Kinect is really being able to "get in the game". It's a blast!

After playing with the Kinect, I dont think I'll be able to look at QTE's in a game the same way either. I finished Goldeneye Wii yesterday (great game by the way) and at the end when you have to do the QTE's, I could help but think "Man, it would be cool if they could let you actually perform the actions instead of using a button press." Instead of hitting "A" or shaking the nunchuck to block a punch, why not actually block the punch like you would in real life? Obviously that wouldn't work in evey situation but I have started thinking about games a little differently.

I honestly think most of the people who can't see the possibility of some really cool Kinect/hybrid games haven't actually used Kinect yet. I'm kind of excited to see what they can come up with. We'll see.

The guy managed to use his whole body to play a 2D Mario game...
This isn't supposed to be a real playable Kinect game since Mario isn't meant to be played like that, and Kinect wouldn't be a good choice for a 2D platformer , but this, as Eamon said, only serves as a tech demo.

What's noticeable is that...it works! With more and more people trying to see what Kinect is capable of, we will eventually see some amazing games. At least, I hope we will.

n4gno4898d ago (Edited 4898d ago )

"it works", yeah, like every 2D platformer (kung fu stuff) with eye toy only.

@vinniepaz, well known troll liar, don't pretend you have a ps3, and move (who is kinect + wii motioin ++++++++++) and play real games !

Rainstorm814898d ago

That seems like that's the anthem for Kinect....."It Works!!"........SMH

Shouldnt it work??

That like buying a game and prasing that " it works "....i just think thats a dumb compliment.

On topic: i dont see how this would make anyone want to make a core kinect platformer though.....yes it works, but response times are key

VINNIEPAZ4898d ago

"and who cares it doesnt have any gamign application

kinect basicall doesnt work with games not casual"

And this is what the PS3 fanboys use to make arguments. WOW. this guy actually said, "and who cares" LOL What are you 12?

I've finally gotten a kinect and glad I did as its a lot better than I thought it would be. When I got Move it just felt like I was playing the Wii (which is not saying that's bad as I love all my systems). It just didn't feel like a new experience like kinect does. Very happy with it so far.

And PLEASE give the "casual" thing a rest. WTF is the problem if a game is casual? You don't ALWAYS need to be playing games with 100 things blowing up and all that. Also can I borrow ya time machine since you obviously went into the future to make that statement and base ya "fact"

PirateThom4898d ago

"You don't ALWAYS need to be playing games with 100 things blowing up and all that"

This is not a hardcore game nor does it define a hardcore game.

This could be where the confusion lies. Hardcore =/= violent

kneelb4zod4897d ago

But the problem with kinect is, it was shown at a convention for people we consider hardcore gamers and advertise as a device that was capable of so much more than a controller and people bought in to that an still believe it ,if it's not able to make the games I like than why buy it.

Pedobear Rocks4898d ago

IMO if the kinect is not translating your movements one for one you ARE using a controller.

MGRogue20174898d ago (Edited 4898d ago )

This is kind of silly & smart at the same time..

I'd rather play with the controller though.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

CrimsonWing6932m ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker19m ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo9m ago(Edited 7m ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos6h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto5h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger885h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).
