IGN: Warhawk AU review - Does this bird of prey soar, or is it a giant turkey?

At it's worst, Warhawk is almost too simplistic to justify its price tag. With just five maps (albeit utterly massive) and a range of weapons that treads pretty close to generic, long-time shooter fans might wonder what the hoo-ha is all about. Of course, it would be your loss if you wrote Warhawk off as cut-price or sideshow - it's a streamlined package that gives you just enough to make it feel like a high-quality production, but the lack of bells and whistles - even in the upcoming retail version, with its making-ofs and trailers - means that Warhawk is all about great short-burst multiplayer mayhem and really nothing else. And that will either sell the game to you or turn you off completely.

"At its best", Warhawk offers an everything-to-everyone multiplayer experience. Almost all areas of gameplay have been thought through logically, offering scaling map sizes, customisation options and a massive scale that begs for team tactics meetings. Each encounter can leap from a ground-only, grenade fuelled skirmish to a cars and troops, versus VTOL bloodbath in moments. It's a joy to play and there's not much else on the system that offers this kind of multiplayer experience. In fact, it's probably the best multiplayer on the system since Resistance: Fall of Man.

its little on levels, nothing new with weapons, not groundbreaking, but my god its fun, lately with next gen games people seem to be forgetting that they're ment to be enjoyable and fun to play, and with all the collectables like medals, ribbons and ranks it'll keep me coming back for ages!

and from a technical point of view, with it weighing in at less than 1GB its simply amazing what the developers have managed, well, well worth £20!!

edit @ SabreMan... damn right mate, i cant fault what sony has done here, and aslong as we get steady updates the best is yet to come!
psn id... Mighty_Douche, give us an add, could do with some mates on the network, all my mates have xbox's!

couldn't agree more, the only niggle i have is having to press L3 to chat a right pain if your in the middle of a dogfight and trying to chat at the same time.

open comms will hopefully be added in a future update, this title will just get better and better as it's a title that can have content added to it indefinitely.
As it stands Warhawk is a fantastic online shooter with a solid foundation to grow into something epic, which i am sure it will judging by how well it's been received

it's all about fun and it has that by the skip full

We tried this in the beta... it didn't work out very well. People with bad mic's would cause feedback and there would be these nasty ringing loops making all communication inoperable. Plus, you don't have to hear people breathing the whole game ;)

I'm waiting for the retail one to hit the Uk.

Download it now your missing out on a sh1tload of fun(out of curiosity when is it hitting the shops) and with all the positive comments from people on this site alone and with a few of the moans that it takes a while to get in a game and at a price of 20 quid or 40 dollars and the expected and anticipated downloadable content it just goes to show that this is one mighty fine game

The most important point is that this game is easy to pick up, its not very first-time friendly and you will get your ass handed to you but after a few plays you start to discover how everything works.

After which the game is immense fun, the graphics look great, the sound works perfectly and all of this is going on and I've yet to see any lag or slow down, even when there is a lot of stuff on the screen.

Great technical achievement, and once the few known niggles get fixed in the upcoming patch things will look even better.

I gotta say, i love the volumetric clouds. Just awesome.

What makes me laugh is, you know some ppl complain as in the review about how many maps etc.

Compare this, to say Quake3 that had quite a few maps, but are very very small by comparison.

I love also bf2, and a couple of maps they released. But where the hell was the capture the flag.

For me this game is spot on. And although not so many maps, they are massive and detailed.
