Open Source Kinect

As seen in the video below, Kinect has been successfully hacked to run on Linux, using open source software that is available for free on the internet. The video, one of several up on Youtube already, shows how the Kinect can be run without an XBox360, potentially even on other consoles. And the hacker claims that it is even relatively easy to do. Brutal Gamer reports. (Kinect, Xbox 360)

That's a picture of Kinect Bundled with an Xbox. I see no stand alone Kinect Sensors. Why would I buy a full system just to get Kinect, when I already have an Xbox. Lots of places are sold out of just the Kinect Sensor. Gamestop just added it back on their site, and my nearest Gamestop was sold out for a few days. MS wants to sell 5 million by years end, so they are going to constantly ship them, but in some places it is sold out.

This brings a smile to my face. I love open source.

Folks keep in mind this is only a driver.
So its the raw input data you then need to make software the can progress and assign that data to actions on the pc.

umm no "open sourcerefers to a program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of charge, i.e., open. Open source code is typically created as a collaborative effort in which programmers improve upon the code and share the changes within the community. Open source sprouted in the technological community as a response to proprietary software owned by corporations." source http://www.webopedia.com/TE... hey didn't know I could post links from my PS3.

Nice, now everyone will buy Kinect
And then buy a xbox360 to get actual games for it
ComboBreaker  +   1403d ago
Now, everybody will buy Kinect for the PC and the PS3,
meaning Microsoft won't make any money from Kinect softwares. And when people don't buy Kinect games for the 360, developers will stop supporting Kinect.

That is a good thing for us. However, it's very bad for Microsoft. But I am happy. And my happiness is all that matter.
