"Multiplayer - Free With Call OF Duty: Black Ops"

NowGamer explores the implications of Activision making Black Ops the last free multiplayer element in the Call Of Duty series. With Battlefield now offering a Free To Play model, what's stopping Bobby Kotick from making CoD a similar paid-for service?

"The potential answer is actually all around us today. Imagine, if you will, a Call of Duty title that follows a similar format to EA’s Need For Speed World; a free to play MMO that lets players rank up to a certain point absolutely free of charge. Then say that you’re having an absolute blast shooting other players, engaging in witty banter with your mates over chat and levelling up your perks but then suddenly, Activision plays its ace." (Activision, Bobby Kotick, Call of Duty: Black Ops, PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

I'll never touch another CoD again if they so much as charge me a penny to play multiplayer in an FPS game.

That would be bad, especially for 360 gamers who are already getting ripped off by MS with Live. Well, they do like to pay for stuff that is literally FREE on every other medium.

I laughed when I first saw that on the bottom of the screen when I first played the game! I guess that was their big F'you to those who thought they would charge for multiplayer!

I don't care either way, but it was just funny to me!

Obsurd
This model would easily halt sales in there tracks. Yes there would be idiots out there who would pay $10 to get a higher rank. Then there are the smart ones who would just switch to a better game which is free like Halo. Halo has less hackers, less glitches, a better party system, more dynamic playlists, etc. The reason people like COD is the pace of play, unique game types not offered in other games, and the multitude of weapons and attachements. Too bad Bungie didn't pick up the attachment idea. Activision is probably just putting these ideas out there to gain feedback. They have a history of ruining franchises so I would not be suprised to see them run the COD name into the ground.

You still have to pay $50 a year to play so its not free anyway.

If this ever happened, I would say that desperate times called for desperate measures at that point. Gamers would need to rise up, storm Activision, nail Bobby Kotick to a cross and drag him through the streets so all developers and CEO's of these companies could see what happens when you **** with your lifeblood. Us gamers. /s

But no really. I'd at least $h!t in his cornflakes.

Gamers would stand up, but people who have money won't give a toss. If you a rich superstar, you'll buy everything.

I thought the "Multiplayer: Free with every copy" statement was a potshot at EA for charging to play online with used copies of their games where online is free with CoD regardless if the game was new or used.

That's what i was thinking too lol

But if Black Ops is the last free online game, then it'll be my last Call of Duty game. That would be sad, because i dont want to be playing Black Ops forever. We'll just have to see if Activision is dumb enough.

Yea, it was!!

Having to pay moolah to play future CoD game's Multiplayer = Not buying future CoD games anymore.

That's how nearly all CoD gamers feel right now.. Nobody likes paying for something that they already get for free.

Well, I only have Black Ops, so if they start charging to play the next COD, I'll drop it like it's hot too. XD
Shackdaddy836  +   1598d ago
I dont even fork over the cash for DLC. There is no way in hell Im paying extra to play multiplayer.

Acti could shove that idea right up their ass.

or maybe...
it was a joke.

I wouldn't mind micro-transactions...if the core game was free and they handled the cost of things reasonably.

For example: AVA is a really well balanced game...mostly....but there are items you can rent that completely ruin what underneath made for a great balanced tactical shooter. The guns all have recoil that makes you study one gun before the next, but then this is ruined by some dude who bought the highest armor out and stacked up on critical chance items.... sad, because underneath it all AVA has really great mechanics.
I'd hate to see CODs problems exacerbated by the f2p model.

TF2 has micro-transactions and you have to buy them game.
How's that for mind-blowing!

The Multiplayer free was a shot at EA but if they ever charge in the future, they will not get my money unless they absolutely go above and beyond what they are doing now. Maybe a more realistic mode with realistic bullet ballistics and such, IDK. MW2 map packs were such a rip-off to begin with!

BC2 Vietnam is going to be $15 I believe and will offer so much more.

Its easy choice for me!

I already pay to play online - the cash goes to the ISP and line rental to BT. My mobile/mifi service is fine for calls, web browsing, emails etc.
creamsoda  +   1598d ago
Haha if they start charging they can expect a whole lot more pirating of their games. So they pretty much f**k themselves anyway.

this is a great reason
call of duty black ops will sell millions....and the battlefield series will flounder....this goes to prove that you do not need to charge for a online pass to be successful.....people will just pass up on your game.
TheRealist2102  +   1597d ago
Lol
Come on now...93% of the people who play Cod would pay to play. Let's face it gamers will always be divided and always lose. I see many people already saying they wouldnt pay but that's bs..I'm sure they'd end up paying to play because all their friends are playing and they wouldn't want to be the odd man out. Bobby could add and take away anything from cod and people would still eat it up.

I really hope the COD series dies right after Black Ops. I'm sick of big companies milking series.
