Why Do Videogames Cost So Much In Australia?

Kotaku AU:

As a general rule there are three things that Australian video game publishers will not talk about: rumour, speculation and the price of games in the Australian marketplace.

But at the moment the pricing issue is at the top of the list – a topic publishers avoid like the plague. Even those that have the leeway to approach the debate, like Sony’s Michael Ephraim, refuse to be drawn on the specifics.

I thought average household income also mattered.

Australia $67,000 per year
USA $50,000 per year

That's in AUD and USD. Plus, you have to take in to account the PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) which is an indicator for what a dollar amount can buy in the respective country. When you look at it after it's modified its;

Australia $44k
USA $50k

Is it not tied to export/import trade?

The more you export a product, the cheaper your dollar should be, because other countries can buy a lot more of a product, hence the dollar being devauled. Kind of like what is happening from China, they export, more then they import.

No ones forcing you to buy them, plus, why would you keep a game which isnt your favourite anyway? If a game costs 100bux, play it, finish it, platinum it, then sell it for 80 bux or so within a few weeks. The game thus costs 20bux.

Plus there are other money saving options such as:

-Borrowing off friends (given you have friends)
-Gamesharing
-Exploiting the 7 day game return deal
-Renting
-trading in
-wait about a week or 2 for crap games to drop to about half the price
-waiting for the goty/complete/ultimate/omgwtfb bq edition with the game + all previous DLC
-reading a book instead

You reckon everyone in the US would be cool with those alternatives if the cost of games doubled over there?

Why would hardcore gamers want to wait? And casual players or mum's buying xmas presents for their kids are just plain getting ripped off.

They're all too drunk to notice.

The dingo took the baby, so that's why it cost much more, to protect the babies from the dingos.
