Microsoft May Finish Third In Console War (RunDLC)

Microsoft released the Xbox 360 in November 2005 to get a head start on the competition. Although this was no match for the Wii, the publisher seemed content to keep Sony in a distant third place, something it has managed to do successfully since 2006. At this point, though, the lead dwindles by the month. Currently, three million units separate the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, leading us to believe that it’s only a matter of time before Microsoft tumbles into third place, where it’ll most likely stay until the end of the current generation.

Then who will come first?

MS really shot themselves in the foot with Kinect. They are abandoning their core audience which is what made the Xbox brand so successful in the first place in an attempt to cater to the large casual market. The problem is, an Xbox 360 with Kinect costs over twice as much as a Wii. Why would a casual spend double their money?

Yes. It really doesn't make any sense what Microsoft is doing. They are right in the middle of a generation abandoning their existing user base in hope of attracting an entirely different group of people.

You would think the wise thing to do would be to stick with the existing fanbase and not blow 500 million entirely on the new market. If the new market doesn't work out for Microsoft and Kinect they have nothing to fall back on and have needlessly destroyed their relation with their old fanbase.

Twice as much money as a Wii. While the Wii has a massive library of casual games. A good many that can now be bought for very cheap.

Not to mention the Wii has none of the major problems Kinect has with needing to have a huge open area to work, or the lag and tracking problems all the game sites keep reporting.

Remove the "May" from the headline
And replace with "Will Definatly"

There really is no doubt. Being effectively dead in Japan and everywhere in Europe other than the UK pretty much makes it inevitable that Microsoft would end up in last place.

It just isn't rational to think that somehow Kinect is going to keep the Xbox 360 out of last place. It's initial sales aren't remotely close to what the Wii experienced and the Wii sold amazingly well in all three regions.

#1 No, they won't, maybe for a bit but not for long.
#2 If they are going into the next gen is because they will be forced to, while the PS3 will still be relevant and pushing great games.

"Theres going to be a lot of 1 "Kinect will push sales""

The fact that it is the stand alone Kinect units that are selling while the Kinect bundles are always in stock give a good indication that it is mostly existing Xbox 360 owners that are buying Kinect.

When Microsoft cut the price to 200 dollars and the 360 didn't explode in sales like the PS2 that was all you really needed to know that it was going to end up in last place this gen.
