Sessler's Soapbox: Black Ops and Sequel Fatigue

"This week we're all playing a lot of Call of Duty: Black Ops, so it may be difficult to remember there was a new Call of Duty less than a year ago. Plus we're getting another one next year. Now while Black Ops may be a fantastic game, Adam Sessler is wondering if too many sequels can kill a game franchise's appeal. Such is the subject of this week's Soapbox. Do you get burned out from playing new iterations of the same game each year? "

another good edition and i agree. i remember when i used to feel like "holy s**t, a new (insert game here)". now i can set my watch by the release dates. i'd give my arm for a new freedom fighters but if i got one year after year after year the the "specialness" of it would wear off real quick.

i guess i just don't understand the mindset of someone who can play the same thing every year. don't you want something new? i like pizza but if i ate it all the time it would get painfully boring, much like these yearly sequels. does the world really need a new assassins creed every year? it was special because it was fresh and new, now it's "jesus christ, another one?"

I agree about AC. Such a bold and unforgiving game when it came out in '07. Now 3 years later we have tank-cannon riding Ezio's lost adventures as a spinoff on the way to AC3!

Where is Freedom Fighters? HL Episode 3? I'm glad Valve is giving Portal the second installment now, since a high level of REAL hype can be generated after 2-3 years. Unlike marketing's forced hype a la COD: BO.

simple.. don't buy it. you've just solved your problem.

it doesn't matter if everyone else buys it. you didn't and you're not supporting it.

i did not buy black ops, after buying the previous current gen variants.

i will say that your analogy isn't that great though. it's not the exact same game every year, just like it's not the exact same pizza every time. you get different toppings, from different pizza joints etc, just like each new game has new maps, modes and content.

whatever

Yeah but it's nothing compared to Filet Mignon, with some red wine and a nice Panna Cotta.
