GameStop Sees Ample Kinect Supply

Microsoft's Xbox 360 Kinect will unlikely see a retail drought this holiday. GameStop says they expect Kinect to be in stock for immediate future and that Microsoft has been quick with replenishing supply.

Microsoft almost always puts out press releases bragging about their sales immediately after they launch something. The fact they have been completely silent about sales is a good indication of how badly Kinect is selling.

Couldn't sell all their Kinect units at the launch event.
No press releases claiming even vague sales numbers.
No execs fawning over sales numbers.
Every attempt to say Kinect is sold out has been greeted with masses of cellphone pictures of stacks of unsold boxes in stores and people reporting huge numbers of unsoled Kinect boxes in stores all over their towns.

Microsoft is certainly going to dump absurd numbers of Kinect units into the retail channel to be able to claim they are sales just like they did with the Xbox at the end of its first year where they made their infamous lie about 10 million sold.

Well its been 4 days and they def aren't like the Wii launch where you couldn't find any at all for nearly half a year which MS said it would be bigger then Wii launch , i think we will see sales or something on Tuesday or Thursday, depending when ever websites release weekly charts

" I don't have a lot of stores that are out of stock at this time and I anticipate going forward from the flow that I can see from [Microsoft] that we'll be in stock coming into the next several weeks."

Lifendz2089d ago (Edited 2089d ago )

I used to take MS silence on sales as a bad omen until that one month where MS was completely silent about sales (I think it was exactly a year ago) and then the NPDs came out and showed it did quite well. The dashboard tech and face recognition auto sign-in stuff seems cool, but 150 is just way too high imo.

Also, I'm sure a lot of people that wanted Kinect found out that they'd also need a 360 which immediately took Kinect out of the impulse purchase category and right into being "too much money when I could just get a Wii."

gigaware2089d ago

What the hell are you talking about? The chain is getting more stock after Microsoft ramped up production LOL

Nitrowolf22089d ago (Edited 2089d ago )

@gigaware

if that is at me please read the quote again, then again i might be the one reading your comment wrong

" I DON'T HAVE A LOT OF STORES THAT ARE OUT OF STOCK AT THIS TIME and I anticipate going forward from the flow that I can see from [Microsoft] that we'll be in stock coming into the next several weeks."

@Below depends what they were expecting, and i am most certainly it isn't as high as MS wanted it to be.

"The fact they have been completely silent about sales is a good indication of how badly Kinect is selling."

Did you only read the headline?

So I guess Gamestop is lying when they say:

"It has exceeded our initial sales expectations, and we've been able to get good replenishment shipments from Microsoft," McKenzie told IGN.

"We've seen a tremendous amount of excitement and demand for (Kinect) and saw lines at our midnight openings around the country, said Best Buy's Chris Homeister. We are currently sold out online, but we continue to work with Microsoft to obtain product shipments now and throughout the holiday season." -Best Buy

"Although Walmart.com and its stores did have Kinect in stock, the leading retail chain warned, "there is going to be very high demand for these products. We will continue to restock throughout the season."
-Walmart

"Target said it experienced "very strong pre-sales" for Kinect, and the retailer did sell out of the Kinect sensor and the 250-gigabyte Xbox 360-Kinect bundle ($400) at its online store." -Target

USA Today has noted that the Kinect sensor peripheral has sold out at "numerous retailers." -USA Today
http://www.usatoday.com/tec...

-Also I guess despite all of micro's high paid exec's telling them that kinect estimates based on initial preorder/retailer feedback was waaaaay to high at 3mil, so instead of lowering their forecast micro raised it to 5mil just to make themselves look bad. lol

Bigpappy2089d ago

I M$ plan to sell over 5 mil in less than 2 month, it better have more than would sell out in 4 day. M$ received over 14 mil camera moduals that is the main part of Kinects assembly. They might sell that 5 mil in the US alone.

These things are moving fast. They are being bought by current 360 owners (Yes, the "Hardcore") and a boatload of casuals (women, Men, and kids). MY will do way more that the 5 mil by year end, if europe is half as excited about Kinect as is the US. The numbers are coming and they are huge! Your welcome.

Sheikh Yerbouti2089d ago

Kinect will do well enough to keep smiles on the faces of the Gamestops and Targets, but everything indicates Microsoft was expecting a faster launch.

Sold out online is not the same as sold out at retailers. I stop counting the number of individual Kinects at 20 at my local Best Buy. There were a dozen more, not including bundles.

I saw no one even looking at them. They had them at the front of the store and in the gaming section being displayed very prominently. I think some casuals see the price tag and remember how much they play the Wii. Gamers look at the games and keep it moving. This will likely ramp up after Black Friday, but I expect no problems in meeting the demand.

Still Microsoft was expecting the next Wii. It obviously isn't. Meeting demand was a problem for the Wii for months, online or retail. Move probably has hit 5 million worldwide already. Kinect still hopes to hit 5 million by Christmas. It probably will, but to have all that ballyhoo/money spent and only match the competitor is embarrassing.

what in the heck are you going on about?

If that was true every kinect sales story would be filled with people posting pictures of giant stacks of unsold kinect boxes.

see what i did there

Trroy2089d ago (Edited 2089d ago )

units,

You have a very confused concept of how MS and Sony move hardware. The retailers *buy* hardware, and they buy as many as they feel they can sell. MS and Sony do not "dump" them at all. They cannot simply choose to ship units to retailers -- the retailers place an order, and then the manufacturer ships *exactly* that many.

Retailers are not merely tools of the companies that manufacture products. They do not operate on some kind of commission system. They buy (low) and sell (high).

If Kinect is not a success, I have a feeling MS is just gonna drop the Xbox brand. All signs point to that conclusion.

Xi2089d ago

which signs are those?

The way I see it.

It's micorosft only means of competing with apple and google in the living room as a service provider, if MS drops it then they'll have pretty much no means of being a recognizable brand beyond computers.

Xbox live for them is just to valuble, they're basing much of their newer products on integration with the live service, windows phone 7 for example and the app and gaming side of the phone os. Combined with the income they make off of downloads, movies, and virtual goods there's no way they'll drop the service.

Nitrowolf22089d ago (Edited 2089d ago )

um no

If Kinect doesn't do expectation then i expect MS to do what they didn't do with the last xbox and that is to continue to support them. MS still has a lot to gain even if they don't meet their initial sales for this year. I just don't see them making that mistake and dropping the xbox just like that

Sheikh Yerbouti2089d ago

XBox is doing good. We have at least one more generation of the console anyway.

It is the Zunes, Kins, Bings and whatnot that are doing poorly.

Clarence2089d ago (Edited 2089d ago )

I wonder why M$ hasn't posted numbers on Kinect. They are quick to post 1st day sales. M$ is able to resupply the stores because they are not selling out. What happen to Wii like numbers M$ said they would do?

gigaware2089d ago (Edited 2089d ago )

3 Days after launch. Took Sony over a month LOL

Jigsaw-2089d ago

sony reported Europe numbers in less than a month actually. also sony is not depending on move. M$ knows it failed ,remember last year they didn't report forza numbers since it sold poor and it actually did when npd released?

Nitrowolf22089d ago (Edited 2089d ago )

Yeah but we had unofficial numbers after about 4 days of it release http://www.product-reviews.... and those we just

when the NDP numbers will come out.

Neko_Mega2089d ago (Edited 2089d ago )

I can name alot of stores here that has Kinect and about over 20 boxes of Kinect Bundle with the 360 (Both 4GB and 250GB).

I think Microsoft should only put out the new 360 S with Halo Reach Bundle then later did the Kinect bundle, I mean who really doesn't have the new 360?

Sad part is this: http://blog.us.playstation....

guerojose2089d ago

C'mon guys, you know how this works. This isn't your first Xmas season, is it?

You try to create buzz by getting your media buddies to write favorable reviews. You tightly control the number of units released to retail, to create the impression of "shortage". You crank up the advertising machine and deploy all of your fake online would-be influencers.

Et voilá. Perception becomes reality, and you're the must-have toy of the season. That is, when it works. Sometimes, people just don't want the product.

We'll see soon enough which is the case here.
