Microsoft's Ballmer sells 12 percent stake in company

Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) Chief Executive Steve Ballmer sold $1.3 billion worth of shares in the company, cutting his stake by about 12 percent, but said his first stock sale in seven years should not be taken as a lack of confidence in the world's largest software firm.

You just can't make this crap up. It's all about the benjamins. I understand that capitalism is a vessel for those who want to make money, well, make money. However, selling 1.3 billion worth of stock is not a "tax move".

The only thing missing is Ballmer on the 2012 ticket. Perfect politician this man is.

The stock was almost $5 bucks higher less than six months ago. Why sell now and leave all that cash on the table unless you don't think it's going to get back up that high again anytime soon.

Bill Gates has been dumping his stock for the last two years. He sells a huge chunk until it starts driving the price down, then he stops, waits, then sells another huge stock. He's been cashing out of Microsoft for quite sometime.

That's why people like Gates and Ballmer have to report their stock sales of company's they have an interest in. With their inside info, you know when they start bailing out in their own accounts that somethings up and I'm not surprised their taking their cash now, given what analysts have been saying about Microsoft as a whole.

DemiT2782d ago (Edited 2782d ago )

actually no, darkride66, that makes no sense.

You claim:
"With their inside info, you know when they start bailing out in their own accounts that somethings up."

Steve Ballmer would NEVER EVER dump his stock if he had info that something was up, because then he would go to JAIL for profiting on insider knowledge.
How unimaginably stupid would Ballmer be if he tried to make a profit on inside information?

Just like you said, guys like him have to report their share disposal, as major shareholders and CEOs.
Can you imagine what would happen if he sold his stock, then it took a dive, while he was left holding the profits?
The would be investigating his every move and he'd eventually be charged with insider trading.

It am astounded to think that you actually believe what you just wrote.
Please try to think before you type.

sheesh. fanboy.

plenty a tool2782d ago

strikes again. you're so obsessed with microsoft failing, you come on here and write a load of nonsense. now why dont you run off to your smgamers blog site and write something especially for n4g about it...

bligmerk2781d ago

This is also counter to what the hypnotized xbots are always saying, that Microsoft has less cash than they used to because they are doing stock buy-backs to raise their stock price. The stock price has been almost flat for 10 years. If anybody looked at the charts, every time it comes up a couple points, Gates sells off millions of shares, 2 to 3 million at a pop, for several days, until the selling starts causing the stock to go down, then he stops, waits a few months for it to come back up a few points, then repeats. Everybody keeps talking about the money, the money, the money when it comes to Microsoft when they don't have a clue the money is about how many shares they have out there and how much each share is worth. If Gates and Ballmer started really dumping their shares, the value of shares, along with the value of Microsoft would plummet. It is really a house of cards stacked very high.

Dragon_Hiko2781d ago (Edited 2781d ago )

Well, maybe he just thinks the company in general is going to slowly decline over an extended period of time naturally? He would have inside information in the sense that he knows the company better than probably most anyone he would be able to predict a decline I believe.

Elven62781d ago

darkride: You do realize that is called insider trading...right?

Companies on the publicly traded market generally have certain time periods each year for employees to sell their stocks safely.

If you get caught, you don't have to go to jail. Sometimes they will either freeze your assets, ask you to pay a fine, etc. Depends on how big the offense is really.

I don't know why DemiT got so many disagrees, he is right.

DemiT2781d ago

@ Elven 6

Yes, I am right.
I am guessing that Darkride66 has a few multiple accounts floating about...

So he sold some stocks to meet his bills. Really think about it they messed with his money.

I guess after the first day sales figures for Kinetic came in and kinetic being the last savior for Microsoft and spending $500 million on marketing Kinetic, even he realises the future looks very bleak. Something even the hardcore Xbox and Microsoft fundamentalists can't see.

Who can blame him preparing to jump ship.

"Gates, who holds about 621 million shares, or about 7.2 percent of the company"

Bill Gates has only 7.2% in shares?

Ballmer for president!

Nitrowolf22782d ago

amazing right?
sadly this is what happens to big business people they start out with majority and eventually end up with small amount. He did leave so it would make sense to have someone else handle his business, and he still makes a lot of money

Perkel2782d ago

he actually recently 95% of his $$$ gave for humanitarian organisations... and their own mellinda and bill organisation.

They don't have much now...

militant072782d ago

he could have done better building health and education centers than trying to get people become christian...

Dragon_Hiko2781d ago

even 5 percent of what his net worth still more than 90 percent of people on this planet will ever have so...they still have a bit.

Elven62781d ago (Edited 2781d ago )

militant07: What the heck are you talking about? Bill Gates is Agnostic (someone who does not rule out the existent of a god(s) but isn't sure what their role is in life).

And perhaps you should actually do some research into what the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is. Hint hint: Reducing poverty, increasing health care, etc.

And the list goes on.

Dragon: Bill Gates is one of the few people who have pledged to donate a majority of their wealth to charitable causes after passing away.

Dragon_Hiko2781d ago

Well...Thats good I guess. I mean not much he could do with it dead is there?

one time sale. Although I know nothing of business. This makes me think he is going to leave the company or something though.

Can't wait for all the PS3trolls and 360 trolls to fight over this.

"Gates, who holds about 621 million shares, or about 7.2 percent of the company, regularly sells shares in batches of 1 million or 2 million to fund his philanthropic foundation."

this guy is too rich. Although I don't think he is the richest in the world anymore right? That Mexican Telecom mogul is I think.

Non_sequitur2782d ago

I think it's strange to sell so much stock if MS plans to make profit with Kinect and the new windows phone. What that means for Balmer is that he will get a smaller cut of the dividends which is deducted from gross profit after a retained earnings report is made. I think he is hiding some inside information from the public since he has willfully prevented himself from profiting in MS's latest products.

Nitrowolf22782d ago (Edited 2782d ago )

this makes me believe that he might be leaving or he is selling some of his shares just in case the cost of them goes down cause u r right why would he cut his own profits? may be i am just missing something here, who knows.

Non_sequitur2782d ago

If MS stock drops he will pay less taxes if he sells it after the price drops. However, if MS expects Wii like sales for Kinect and iphone like sales for the new windows phone, there shouldn't be a need to sell since that may raise MS's stock price and he'll receive his cut in dividends.
