Microsoft Has a Hit with Kinect Xbox 360 Game Controller

Microsoft's new hands-free Kinect controller makes playing Xbox 360 video games feel like magic: Wave your arms, move your body, issue a command and voila! games happen.

Appropriately, the new $150 device began disappearing from store shelves as soon as it went on sale Thursday.

Kinect =

Microsoft's secret and ingenious way of getting fat kids up off the couch and burning some calories.

RememberThe3572478d ago

Good health is often associated with a health weight. A lot of people here in the US need to get off their asses anyway.

Odin7772478d ago

I don't think Kinect can really make that much of a difference. Most of the obese xbox kids will probably stick to Halo and Cod, and Kinect won't be able to remedy the high caloric intake of American children anyway, which is the main problem.

deadreckoning6662478d ago (Edited 2478d ago )

Microsoft Windows is the most popular computer operating system in the world and XBL has generated billions of dollars in revenue. The LAST thing Microsoft wants to do is get people off their asses.

Simon_Brezhnev2478d ago

but wtf does anything you say have to do with kinect.

I'm not surprised kinect sold well even my moms was asking me about it.

It works and is a lot of fun.

MinskyM2478d ago

Then why would a major gaming site like Joystic sum up Kinect with:

http://www.joystiq.com/2010...

"For all the talk of revolutionizing the Xbox 360 experience and making gaming more natural/ accessible, it's bordering on absurd how broken Kinect is when it comes to something as simple as working in your home."

testerg352478d ago

So you trust joystiq now? So when they talk smack about a PS3 product, can I quote them without one of you guys saying how biased that site is?

feelintheflow2478d ago

don't appeal to a video game centric website. Just like someone who doesn't like italian food wouldn't like spaghetti and meatballs. They sound like hardcore gamers and this doesn't appeal to them. I have it, and think it is fun. My wife and i played for 6 hours today and had a great fun time. Was it like playing GTAIV, nope but it was fun. Anyone who dismisses this thing based on the games that are out right now probably just don't like casual games.

Bigpappy2478d ago (Edited 2478d ago )

I asked you to try the thing yourself and you are telling me what some dude on a website said. There really is no hope for some of you.

@KratosGirI:Kinect is not fun.
Kinect does not work.
People do not need to try Kinect.

It worked! Thank you for snapping me back. LOL

*waves a pocket watch at Bigpappy*

You are getting sleepier and sleepier.

Repeat after me:

Kinect is not fun.
Kinect does not work.
People do not need to try Kinect.

Once again:

Kinect is not fun.
Kinect does not work.
People do not need to try Kinect.

Once I snap my fingers, you will wake up and realize the truth that sets you free.

gigaware2478d ago (Edited 2478d ago )

True that. The masses will agree with you. Word of mouth is going to make kinect the king of gaming. This makes me excited for gaming again. It's so fun and cool so futuristic. Friggin computer knowing what humans are in the room like a true AI.

Friggin games are fun as hell. People are trying to buy Kinect in droves in game shops I went to.

Its pre Wii launch hate all over again from fanboys and media. I look at my 360 saying God dam where the hell did that come from.

i was at gamestop today from the looks of it people shopping didnt care for it.

feelintheflow2478d ago

In Billings Montana, if you didn't pre order you are s.o.l. and while I was waiting in line at least 5 people came in and asked if they had it and they said they didn't know when the next shipment would hit.. So each persons experience is different.

Bzone242478d ago

Gamestop in my area sold out. The Walmart here had 2 left when I was there.

DigitalRaptor2478d ago (Edited 2478d ago )

It's a speed bump in the industry, if you wanna take that analogy. And it's all down to the control scheme. I mean imagine how much better games could be when they aren't limited by your bodily inputs.

Not to mention, MS doesn't have the pedigree to pull off anything spectacular with Kinect. It's either bog-standard shovelware or third-party tosh or both.

Enjoy those watered down, casual experiences while they last. You should be clear in the knowledge that they won't be anywhere near as good as actual controller-based games with actual depth and substance, and more options via buttons. But do enjoy your time with Kinect because that's probably what matters. I mean you might as well get your money's worth.

Side note: For something that's meant to be so revolutionary, it's only been getting a luke-warm or even negative reception, and that's just based on the hardware reviews alone. Hardly a "hit". Something to think about.

feelintheflow2478d ago

Casual games and hardcore controller only games. I am not elitist enough to think you can't enjoy one and enjoy the other. negative reception from the hardcore gaming sites but sites from normal non gamers like abc and the ny times find it very enjoyable just like most people i know who bought it. Have fun living in your ivory tower looking down on the poor souls who enjoy games that allow them to just have a good time with.

kaveti66162478d ago

"Not to mention, MS doesn't have the pedigree to pull off anything spectacular with Kinect. It's either bog-standard shovelware or third-party tosh or both"

Why don't you just come out and say things plainly?

Just say, Kinect sucks because I don't like Microsoft and Microsoft made Kinect. The end."

Isn't that easier on everyone instead of trying to disguise your fanboyism with rational argumentation?

Microsoft doesn't have the pedigree? Ohkay, fella. Microsoft is some backwater hick company, huh?

Would you say that a company like Apple has pedigree? Did you guys already forget about how the iPhone 4 launched and didn't even work? And how Apple was initially denying that there was a problem, and then they were charging 30 bucks for bumpers to fix the problem, and then they were finally admitting to the fact that there was a problem and they knew about it?

What about Sony? Does Sony have pedigree? Remember the rootkit fiasco? The exploding Vaio batteries? Remember when Sony went after a small time business owner and destroyed his entire life because he was selling PSPs from the PAL region to the NTSC regions?

But no, it's Microsoft that doesn't have the pedigree. Everyone else is fine.

gamingdroid2478d ago

I think people should really try Kinect out. Navigating the Kinect Hub and using voice control is really cool. It works really well!

That said, the Kinect Adventure game was good, not great. The river raft and the obstacle course was fun, the other was kind of crappy.

The quality across the games and even on navigation alone is quite different. I suspect MS will have to release a unified interface to ensure quality across the board. One example is navigating the Kinect Hub with your hand was awesome, but it was somewhat poor on Kinect Adventures main menu.

Kinect ID worked great on me though... It certainly met my expectations and paying a $100 for it is a bonus! ... in case someone is wondering, I got it at a great deal from the MS store when they had a promo going way back when.

dragunrising2478d ago (Edited 2478d ago )

Joystiq overall is quite critical of Kinect's space requirements. They recently wrote an article regarding Kinect and its conflict with your coffee table (good read). Otherwise they have been very positive. If you check out a few of their reviews, you'll see that this is the case.

Disappearing from store shelves? Wut? My local Wally World, Target, and Gamestop all have plenty of Kinects in stock. And under 3000 people showed up in Times Square for the midnight launch party. I doubt it's really disappearing as this says.

testerg352478d ago (Edited 2478d ago )

Umm.. so you hate Kinect so much that you visited all those stores? Are you that much of a troll?

Edit: Right.. he went shopping for Kinect? What could be possibly sold out that he had to go to those 3 stores and just happened to look how Kinect is doing.

T9X692478d ago

lol I don't think you realize how big NYC is. Around 3000 people is a lot of people for a midnight launch, especially considering there are TONS of mom and pop stores in NYC that had Kinect available before it was released. I could have bought Kinect Tuesday if I wanted to, so it wouldn't make sense to stand in line for hours when I could walk 30 sec around the corner and buy it if I wanted to. I'm sure I'm not the only person in NYC that thinks that way either.

niceguyWii32478d ago

fyi 3000 people is nothing in a city of 9 million
