New York Times: Kinect leaves hand controls in the dust

Seth Schiesel reports in the New York Times (Nov 4):

"Nothing since the Wii, certainly not Sony’s imitative Move system for the PlayStation 3, approaches the ambition and technical achievement of Kinect in potentially reshaping the mass home media experience."

He is particularly impressed by the way that by simply uttering voice commands the XBox serves up ESPN programs, movies, music and games.

He sums up the Kinect experience as: "Welcome to the future"

good and amazing reviews so far. kinect adventures was a let down but surprising kinectimals is getting some love from reviewers. As espected dance central and your shape fitness are the killer apps this holidays.

can't wait to get my kinect next week

big_silky2481d ago

i'll wait until the 2nd wave of software to get one but much crow will be eaten on n4g the next few days.

GamingGamer2481d ago (Edited 2481d ago )

so far this is only good review... and not from gaming site.

IGN- "it actually doesnt work...well. sorta"
they said they give it higher score for its casualness and such..

Kotaku- "We've both had issues with some Kinect games not recognizing a gesture here or being slow to respond to another"

" the voice-control fail us once in a while, forcing us to repeat whatever we barked at the Kinect. He's had it worse"

"some games simply break, like the time Kinect Sports didn't let him detach a virtual bowling ball from his virtual hand."

Engadget 6/10

Cnet- 3.5/5 even though MS owns them

Destrutoid- not so good...

@disagrees. care to explain?? kinda sad xbox fanboys cant handle this...

A Cupcake for Gabe2481d ago

What the hell is this line: "Nothing since the Wii, certainly not Sony’s imitative Move system for the PlayStation 3, approaches the ambition and technical achievement of Kinect in potentially reshaping the mass home media experience."

What the f'ck is this fanboy anti-sony remark here for?

Masamori Sumimura2481d ago (Edited 2481d ago )

Are you kidding me? you took all the bad reviews and named them. what about the ones that gave it a good score? you'Re forgetting them? or do you want me to post them for you?

Kinect Review (Strategy Informer) 9.5/10
ElectricPig 5/5

Kotaku ''If Microsoft keeps supporting it, and if its flaws can be patched and improved through software, Kinect can be revolutionary.''

GalaxyNextDoor '' And like Xbox 360 itself which has evolved over time, Kinect’s software will grow just the same. As I said, you’re banking on potential with Kinect, and with Microsoft’s massive support for the wonder sensor - the future of motion gaming on the Xbox 360 is only limited by the power of the game designers behind it. ''

HolyOrangeCows2481d ago (Edited 2481d ago )

Yep, the fanboys are already here. "OMG OMG OMG! Newspaper reviewer is impressed! It must be awesome!!!"

@Masamori
Yep. Those 2 no-name site reviews totally cancel out that everyone else says that Kinect doesn't work well.
So long as you've got yourself convinced.

-GoldenTimeLover-2481d ago (Edited 2481d ago )

He gave five sites (IGN, Kotaku, Engadget, Cnet and Destructoid). You only gave two (Strategy Informer and ElectricPig). Plus this site, NYT.

GamingGamer wins.
\
EDIT: Where did that 9/10 came from? I cant see it anywhere on the site.

gigaware2481d ago (Edited 2481d ago )

Troll please I can quote bad things said about Move. I guess if I were a PS3 fanboy I'd be upset too if some media outlet that has more in common with average people than gaming media clowned my console. This is why you chose to post only the negative statements from those review from varying grading contexts. There no point {8-bit}

CVG 8.8

CathyLorrain2481d ago (Edited 2481d ago )

It would be one thing if it was just small random sites reporting all these major problems. But it is the major gaming sites that are the ones talking about huge problems.

So either Kinetic is flaky enough that it is only working some of the time for some sites. Or sites like the New York Times are just taking Microsoft's press/review kit and passing it off as a review.

Shang-Long2481d ago (Edited 2481d ago )

read the article....
its more about entertainment capabilities then its game console aspect. but i said before it has a chance to succeed especially in the home entertainment side

not sure where that 9/10 came from through theres no score on the page

Masamori Sumimura2481d ago (Edited 2481d ago )

He gave five websites so what? The Websites he named all said some Positive and Negative stuff about kinect but he only posted the Negative stuff and all the other fanboys jumped on the agree button. I bet you guys dint even read the reviews.

HolyOrangeCows2481d ago

"but much crow will be eaten on n4g the next few days"

Right, because you will associate the sales numbers to quality. It's not hard to guess what you'll say:
"See! Those PS fanboys were wrong! Look at these great sales numbers; Kinect is obviously amazing"

badz1492481d ago

that's what we call as "gimme a piece of that $500m"!

Sitris2481d ago

"For all the talk of revolutionizing the Xbox 360 experience and making gaming more natural/ accessible, it's bordering on absurd how broken Kinect is when it comes to something as simple as working in your home."

"I have to put this bluntly: If you don't have at least 8 feet of unobstructed space between where you plan to place the sensor and the limit of how far back you can stand, Kinect will just not work right. Placing it on top of your television will give you an extra foot or so, but still, those who live in apartments, plan to use Kinect in a bedroom, or otherwise have "unconventional" living room layouts are, for all intents and purposes, screwed."

HMMMMMMMMMMMM

GamingGamer2481d ago

that guys point was that I named MAJOR 5 gaming website.

while u named 2 no-name gaming website. and score from one of them is not even verifiable apparently.

it seems you are pretty desperate.

Longrod_Von_Hugendon2481d ago (Edited 2481d ago )

Much crow will be eatin'...but by you.

If you can look at this video and say that kinect preforms well...you need help. Major fail like we've been seeing all along.

ChineseDemocracy2481d ago

I don't know, something seems a little bit off to me.

I want to see some independent reviews from smaller game sites, see what they think.

The general consensus with the PSMove was about 7-8/10, the reviews for kinect seem to be a little bit more inconsistent.

cooperdnizzle2481d ago

The thing is all the sites that gave it a good review are NOT GAMING sites. Every gaming site i have seen has given it a low score. Ill take what the game experts say. Not some lame old reviewer!

raztad2481d ago

"The general consensus with the PSMove was about 7-8/10"

Not exactly. PSMOVE was 8-9/10, and most reviews considered the software lineup when assigning the final score. Which IMO, is pretty unfair for a hardware review. I doubt you will see people doing the same for Kinect.

nycredude2481d ago

"Nothing since the Wii, certainly not Sony’s imitative Move system for the PlayStation 3, approaches the ambition and technical achievement of Kinect in potentially reshaping the mass home media experience."

This line right here tells you everything you need to know about this review. Throw it in the garbage.

amazing reviews?!

keep telling yourself that.

Coffin872481d ago

Since when is New York Times the source for legit video game news?
They're freaking MAINSTREAM, and mainstream hates shooters.
So yeah ...

lokiroo4202481d ago

I guess this will be the review to clutch and refer to? hahahaha

Omega42481d ago

I agree I must say I'm pretty shocked how well most of the software is being received too MS should have released these reviews earlier.

No he's not, he's already got his "fee".

badz1492481d ago

people buy Kinect and figure out that it's not what they were told it was and leaves Kinect collecting dust leaving other controllers with itself in the dust!

truegame2481d ago

Some of you guys can fight about the review (Good or Bad). However, after ready the review, I did not see any score of 9/10. Could someone point me to the score? or did the poster make up a score? which is wrong to fit his or her agenda.

Christopher2481d ago (Edited 2481d ago )

***Lee, a tech-savvy 20-something who is rarely impressed by my various electronic wonders, turned to me and said his first words since sitting down perhaps three minutes earlier, “Are you kidding me?***

I would think any tech-savvy person in their 20s would already know pretty much everything there is to know about Kinect. Either the author takes some liberties with this story or his friend isn't tech-savvy.

***while it incorporates ridiculously advanced technology***

I weep for people who honestly believe this.

I don't consider this a review, but an opinion piece to sell the console by a person who obviously knows he's sending smoke up my ass with these type of lines. C'mon, I don't write gaming pieces for a newspaper, but even I know that this technology is far from 'advanced' as people make it out to be and has been around since the early 90s.

This is the same guy who had this at the end of his Move review: "But as a reviewer, I get this stuff free. For a family that has already invested in a Wii and lots of Wii games, spending the money to replace all of that on the PS3 and Move is going to be a tough sell for now, especially with Microsoft’s Kinect around the corner."

The reviewer had pretty much already made up his mind on Move vs Kinect back then. Buying a PS3 + Move is too expensive to replace a Wii, but buying a 360 + Kinect isn't.

Sorry, just not a very good review, if you could even call this opinion piece one since he really just said what he did and not how it worked or didn't work.

Ju2481d ago

Leaves hand controls in the dust. Especially when the only aspect of Kinect in that article described covers how great the voice control scheme works - not its content, nor any game play for that matter.

I must have missed something, because obviously in that regard both Sony's Move and Nintendo's Wii suck balls since they do not have any voice recognition built into their resp. gaming operating systems...otherwise this comparison quote is just a cheap shot at the competition for no apparent reason. NYT, huh?

Listen there will always be controllers, and for the most part GAMERS use controllers more often then they will use motion control.
