Does Kinect hate your small apartment?

Cnet: In many ways, Microsoft's Kinect for the Xbox 360 is an innovative concept: ditch the controller and let your body interact directly. Sounds great on paper, but the Kinect is a bit more greedy with its space requirements than either the Nintendo Wii or PlayStation Move, and that could hurt folks with small apartments. Folks like me.

So, we might have to move into a bigger apartment.

WildArmed2538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

Well to be fair.. did people plan on dancing in a 2x2 square area? (assuming u are playing Dance Central).

Same w/ DDR, did people plan on playing that on their ps2 controllers because the DDR pad requires space?

For all the things to bash Kinect, they chose something that isn't really fair to the tech.

I would have paid more attention to the article if it complained about the lag time or the calibration issues (according to IGN)

TheHater2538d ago

I had no problem playing DDR in my room and it's pretty small due to my computers, bed, closet, TV, etc taking up so much space

HolyOrangeCows2538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

[33.5 x Sin(68.5)]/Sin(21.5) = 85.05 inches (7.09 feet)

7 feet back just for the camera to see you (If you're of average height or even slightly shorter - I used one of the shorter estimates of average human height). And you'll need at least 2-3 feet more in order to take advantage of 3D space.

10 feet IS an issue.

CathyLorrain2538d ago

7 feet back? That's crazy. I don't know anyone who has that type of space in their home or apartment without having to moving stuff out of the way every time.

kaveti66162538d ago

Do you guys live in prison cells?

A prison cell is 10 feet by 8 feet, and you guys are worried that you don't have 7 feet to work with? I live in a small apartment in Van Nuys, and I have plenty of room. Although, I have no plans on buying this product because I prefer regular controllers.

CathyLorrain2538d ago

google images "gamers apartment living room"

I don't see a single living room that has remotely enough space without having to move furniture or objects out of the way each time you want to play.

'7 feet back? That's crazy. I don't know anyone who has that type of space in their home or apartment without having to moving stuff out of the way every time.'

LMFAO..anyone??

Stand in front of your TV sand walk 6 steps back and pretend ANYONE doesnt have 6 to 7 feet..

Then pretend that you played any Wii or Move game less than 6 feet..LOL

Even if you move your coffee coffee table..it's the sdame thing you would do for all motions controls..

GMWPS32538d ago

I also have a rug and heavy coffee table about 5 feet from the TV and the couch is another 5 feet from the coffee table. So I would have to lift it every time I play or move it (wifey does not like that last part!)

I don't know many people with a large living room and no coffee table in the middle. This is the same problem as the internet cable stretching across the living room to reach the PC, hence the need for wi-fi.

edgeofblade2538d ago

I agree with you. And most people aren't going to return the sensor outright. They will try to find a way to make it work... unlike bitchy reviewers on their critical pedestal.

I've got 12 feet of space in the living room, sans coffee table. I'm ready.

When I pick mine up this afternoon, my biggest concern will be sunlight coming through the window. I might have to get a film on it or install windows treatments to cover the top.

you dont need to 'move' into a bigger appartement, you can 'move' in your current one ;)

Lightsaber2538d ago

maybe if the people complaining about the space had a job they could move out of their parents house and actually have a living room. They learn that 6-8 of room isnt a big deal cause every home in american has at least that much room.

Zinc2538d ago

Wow, what a great comment to be making at a time when world-wide, job growth is stagnant at best and in many, many situations negative growth is now the norm. Congrats on your comment. Truly a gem of gems.

HolyOrangeCows2538d ago

You say "every home in american has at least that much room" and you're going to act like you AREN'T the one living in your parent's house? Pffffft.

rezzah2538d ago

Lol Zinc +bubs

Lighsaber....that was a very stupid comment. You must be young, I'd be suprise if you were older than me and still think that its so easy to move around in todays world.

My living room has the space but it is designed in a way that my couch HAS to be where it is, in the center of the room and my tv has to be where it is. If I back my couch up I block the hallways so that's a no go. This leaves me about 4 feet between the edge of my couch n the entertainment center also I'm 6'5". Basically I can use it if I attach it to the wall and remove the couch entirely. Im sorry lightsaber, not everybody can afford a spacious 6 bed 4 1/2 bath lakefront manor.

cmrbe2538d ago

You just described your fellow redneck x360 fanbrats.

leonlion2538d ago

That's the problem right there

If I did live with my parents I would be fine they have a big house

Not in my cramped little 3 bedroom house there's no way

"it's bordering on absurd how broken Kinect is when it comes to something as simple as working in your home."

ElementX2538d ago

Why do you hate it? What has Kinect ever done to you? Were you abused by Kinect as a child? Did Kinect molest you?

patterson2538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

Lag and space are going to be the two biggest hurdles for Kinect it seems.

Troll_Police2538d ago

And price. $150 for a camera is a tough sell.

Shang-Long2538d ago (Edited 2538d ago )

didnt you hear it doesnt lag you do

blasian2538d ago
