Microsoft posts $16.2 billion in revenue for Q1 FY11, Halo and 360 helped

Microsoft today announced record first-quarter revenue of $16.2 billion for the quarter ending September 30, which is 25 percent increase over the same period in 2009.

The story is too old to be commented.

Meanwhile, the country falls apart.

lol @ the denial of disagrees.
No, no no the country isn't falling apart you're wrong! The recession is over the government told me so!

Edit: @ below, actually yes, Microsoft's shareholder companies have played a part in the terrible economy. But actually, I was just making a joke that the rich are getting richer while the poor are struggling to even survive. Great job, Microsoft!

Fred-G-Sanford2851d ago

$16.2 Billion?

Isn't that Gran Turismo 5's development costs up to this point? lol

Game-ur2851d ago

You know this is all Windows 7 and office, and from businesses who skipped Vista, they keep shoehorning the 360 in the reports to make a better looking seemingly divers portfolio.

They claimed XBOX "profits" but leave out the huge spending on advertizing (500m just for Kinect) and 3rd party content and timed exclusives, and divert the cost to other divisions or FY reports. That’s why there are calls to separate the entertainment division, to make sure it’s a really reliable division that can succeed on its own.

Sarcasm2851d ago

They posted an increase in revenue, not necessarily profit. Although good for MS, one day I'd like to get a Job there. And once I do I will get arrested for punching Aaron Greenberg in the face.

nickjkl2851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

but microsofts shares were down 14 percent this year

they only did good because windows 7 sold 240 million copys at the lowest price of 90 dollars is 26 billion dollars

how can you disagree with facts about a company poor delusional kids not knowing anything about buisness

after all i just looked at one article on reuters about its recent news

sack_boi2851d ago

Going to laugh my ass of at Sony's numbers tomorrow.

JokesOnYou2851d ago

but I guess no matter how well the 360 performs, despite the great games that lead the bestseller charts, despite the best online service, despite offering a new more innovative motion tech device in an attempt to bring a whole new demographic to the 360 platform thats been criticized for its lack of casual appeal, despite micro being the only console maker who has made a real effort to support PC gaming, despite all the other great products they have contributed in OS/software/pc market, the haters will find only the negatives and still ignore micros success as if its just luck that the company continues to do so well.

BillOreilly2851d ago

yes thats true but microsoft uses that profit to invest in new r and d, new products, new offices exc. not to mention their losses are sometimes in the billions. I hate this take down the corperations the rich man is evil bs goin around america. How many jobs do ms create? there you go. rich companys and people create the jobs we work at but lets hate them because they make more money? they put up the capitol to start the company and had the idea. damn liberals want everyone who works and earned success to give it away to poor people who are too lazy to apply themselves and earn it, rather get hand outs, govt checks, and entitlements. You see how well that worked for greece, france, the soviet union right. lol How about i see their success and it motivates me to go to college or start a buisiness? Bill Gates is giving ALL his money to charity when he passes on top of the BILLIONS he already gave so......

BulletToothtony2851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

for those interested only $5.41 billion of that was actually profit..

and I'm not saying that that's bad, but it's truly shocking that they would spend 1 billion on that on advertising.. crazy business strategies..

StanLee2851d ago

How did you get 20 people to agree with you? On no less? I guess there are still stealth XBox 360 fanboys on the site after all.

commodore642851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

@ bullettoothtony

"only $5.41 billion of that was actually profit"
"but it's truly shocking that they would spend 1 billion on that on advertising.. crazy business strategies.."

Hmmm. logic fail.
If I ran a business and had to spend $1 to make $5 that would seem to be a very wise business decision to me...

I guess you felt you had to put some negative spin on $5+ billion in profits, right?

BulletToothtony2851d ago

not at all dude... you're just a fanboy.. and i highly doubt that they are gonna make $5 billion on Kinect.. lol i mean.. if they made $5 billion on windows 7, xbox 360, accessories, xlive, Office, windows mobile..

I HIGHLY DOUBT that kinnect alone will make them just as much.. nice try thou

as a gamer i wish they would've spent it on games that's all.. not advertising

The Maxx2851d ago

I am not sure how old you are. But you clearly lack the knowledge of business.

Are you also upset that Sony spends money on advertising the move with Kevin Butler?
Or Advertisements for the PS3?
What about all the money Sony spends in advertising all their other products like TV's, handhelds and laptops?

Advertising is a crucial part of creating product awareness. Now if MS had a lot less money and were spending 1/2 a billion dollars, then ya I would agree with you. But $500 million is nothing if a business is worth $230 billion. MS has plenty of Money. Even Sony said that advertising wise, they can't compete with what MS can do.

Look at it this way. If MS makes $20 off of the expected 3 million before end of year, that is $60 million profit. Now when you start factoring accessories such as games and consoles. MS will make that $500 million back in just a few years.

Marketing and Advertising play HUGE roles in companies.
It is just ignorant to think that you know what is best for a multi billion dollar company. You either are just a kid and know nothing about the business world or you are just another upset Sony loyalist and is looking for any excuse to hate on MS and their products. Even to the point of looking foolish with your comments that hold no weight and sound like you are just pulling random complaints out of your butt.

the people that say MS is a dying brand are the ones reading into the numbers set by investment bankers.
The people that put the world into recession, I have a friend in investment banking working for morgan stanley and he told me that MS was put down a few pegs so some people can profit on buying shares lower and then selling them once they increase.
The xbox has been a relative success (apart from RROD), people are buying the console. Im sure that Kinect will sell a solid amount, windows phone 7 in general from user reviews have been pretty positive but its still early days.
If either have a solid few months microsoft will grow even more and they will be upgraded again.
Its the bankers playing tricks.

-Alpha2851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

Now if only they'd know how to spend it (when it comes to Xbox)

TheGreenMan2851d ago

Revenue does not mean profit. If MS' expenses are through the roof, their 16.2 billion in revenue is meaningless. Cashflow is what makes a business successful.

silvacrest2851d ago

they do its called kinect

dont forget the half a bill on marketing alone...

number472851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

What does microsofts profit have to do with... more expensive XBL and less games for the 360 again? Oh right... nothing at all. Hurry up and renew before the price hike guys! I've never seen so many people that are so delusional in my life.... I'm glad to see an american company doing well. But as far as the "YESSS" goes, really guys? 360 owners get no benefit from this. Kinect & half a billion should tell you that.

and I repeat for the xboxers... :

"I'm glad to see an american company doing well."

You guys can't seem to read that well. I'm commenting on the cheerleading & chest thumping for a company that provides nothing to its audience for all the $ it has, as if its some sort of benefit to Xbox360 owners. They've closed down many studios, surely coulda saved people time with fixing rrod permanently. The dying brand was directed towards its Phones/other devices that just don't make a dent in anything. MS will always make money off of windows. Thats what a monopoly is.. This is a gaming news site. You wouldn't know that due to the 360 section only being active during talks of sales & advertising though...

bustamove2851d ago

He's mad because a company posted a revenue. LOL.

air12851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

and this guy doesnt get marked as a troll and restricted for like 3 days?

but if i was to say move is da bomb! i get banned for 3 days. like if its my fault that n4g let news come in that it only sold 300k.. the irony these moders have!

-Alpha2851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

"360 owners get no benefit from this"

So? People have an interest in these sort of topics.

That's all it is. Why do you think people follow sales, revenue, etc? On one hand there are the fanboys who take joy in seeing one company crush the other, but on the other hand people just have an interest to see how the industry is doing.

Blacktric2851d ago

These kinds of fanboy clowns should be banned from N4G, forever. ffs, look at this headline "lol @ MS cheerleaders...", pure flamebait to start a flamewar. Nothing else.

gamingdroid2851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

Actually, a healthy company with good cash flow, profit margin and cash laying around means they can invest in other areas that others can't while the economy is in slumber!

Not any company can push a product like Kinect and take a chance on new technology!

This also means that they have the financial ability to undertake large investment into other business such as Xbox Live. We have already seen a new and major update to the dashboard again!

TheGreenMan2851d ago

You are right. Companies with cashflow are the healthiest. But remember, high revenues do not equal cashflow. Expenses must be deducted and dividends must be paid before we know how profitable MS really is. I'm sure they still turned a healthy profit, but it's important not to get revenue and cashflow mixed up. They are two very different things.

baodeus2851d ago

so if a company that doesn't provides nothing to its audience for all the $ it has, then where do they get those money in the first place?

jahcure2851d ago

Read and Comprehend
this is does not say anything about posting profit/loss.

revenue is just the sum of all sales. You can spend 20 dollars investing on something and make 15$ the next day and post on the internet you posted 15$ in revenue. It looks nice but you also posted a net loss of 5$

don't be fooled by sensationalism headlines

BLaZiN PRopHeT2851d ago

You mean the 382 million the E&D division made or the 5.41 billion the company made overall?

feelintheflow2851d ago

They made a profit. You do know what profit is don't you? I personally don't care how much they made, but you can't deny they are a profitable company. All the doom and gloom about them is laughable. All they do is make money, is there growth, not really that much, but as long as they keep turning a "profit" I don't see them going anywhere anytime soon.

gman_moose2851d ago

What the hell are you talking about? E&D made 1.8 mil for the quarter- not 382. Where are you getting that figure?

Quoted straight from the article:

"Net income came in at $5.4 billion which is an increase of 59 percent over 2009, with the Entertainment and Devices Division (includes Xbox 360) reporting revenue of $1.8 million for the quarter compared to $1.4 million the year prior."

JasonPC360PS3Wii2851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

I noticed you left out this part in your quote

"Profit for the division was $382 million for the period, which is up 46 percent yoy."

Notice where it says "profit" and "$382 million"? You may want to come back and edit that before it's too late

JasonPC360PS3Wii2851d ago

Remember all the news post from 3rd rate analyst saying MS is falling flat? This is why, they spread FUD right before MS post a profit gain. Why? because they own stock in competing companies so they need to make as much money before the price goes down. Also every PS3 fanboy on this site screamed "fall of MS" now they eat those words. mmmm good arn't they?

tinybigman2851d ago

should i care what these companies make when i don't see a dime of this money?

JasonPC360PS3Wii2851d ago

"That im wise enough not to believe anything, everything I read on the net; and that I can use my own brain to see that 2.5 mil sold is a pretty damn good start.

I don't want to hear about this shipped crap I paid off my preorder and the only piece I could take home was the Nav because the Moves are sold out."

"i love how almost 2 million sold is a bad thing. if we won the lotto for 2 million i guess that would be a bad thing too huh?"

You were saying? Seems you care about sales after all.

tinybigman2851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

did you just go back to copy what i said about Move? wow the lengths that people on this site goes to is mind boggling hahahahaha. i comment on how much an item sold and you somehow think that these companies making profit which i don't see a dime of is the same thing. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha oh 360 fanboys crack me up they make me sad to be an american sometimes since it's mostly americans who worship M$ and a plastic box full of wires hahahahhahahahahahahahahaha.

oh yea dude are you some kind of stalker or something hahaha?

zeddy2851d ago

right so they will put some of that $16 billion to some exclusives now wont they?

iPad2851d ago

Only fanboys care how much Microsoft makes.

JasonPC360PS3Wii2851d ago

"Overall, Sony sold 1.8m"

"The PS3 is doing better than PSOne.
PSOne- 30million in the first 3 years
PS3- 33million in the first 3 years."

"When GT5 comes out, the PS3 will explode."

So what does that make you?

SkyGamer2851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

It is important that a company does well. If a company doesn't do well, then what gets cut? Surely not the Windows or Office or Server brand. What would get cut Bing? How about WP7? If a company has to make cuts because they are losing money that will affect the gaming division. Happens to every company, if you lose a lot, you have to make cuts. First you make cuts to your weakest division and then so on. This is good news for the X-brand as well as if sony posts profits and high revenues, that would be good for the ps brand.

Who said MS was a dying brand again?

T9X692851d ago

People are in denial if they think MS is a dying brand.

NYC_Gamer2851d ago

MS will never die long as computers are here

Masamori Sumimura2851d ago

Some article trying to get hits. MS might not have the monopoly of the market like a few years ago but thinking they'Re a dying brand is simply stupid. I'm pretty sure they are still n.1 in the OS market right? and Xbox is doing pretty well.

-Alpha2851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

That's not true, it was an opinion piece from CNN. It has more credibility than a lot of the amateur sites that are popular around here.

The problem is that the N4G/gaming community take an article like that and lacks the understanding, so they dumb it down to the basic "Xbox vs. PS3" type of mentality gamers have with the companies.

That article went over my head, I don't really understand economics or consumerism, but many people relate it to the easiest thing they can, and in N4G's case that is gaming.

Fishy Fingers2851d ago

No one? CNN stated dying consumer brand, which is true, they've gone down in consumer option polls, but a dying company? Never they basically are software.

NoBUDI2851d ago

Then who in the world keeps buying their goods if this is a record quarter?
I mean it cant be people, since people are CONSUMERS, robots maybe? No aaron greenberg has been buying it all right?

Fishy Fingers2851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

Why not go read the CNN article and educate yourself, because you clearly could do with it. It's basically, I'll keep it basic, a decline in consumer awareness and opinion and more dependency on commercial.

Apple/Google for example are higher calculated consumer brands, yet they dont make as much money as MS.

feelintheflow2851d ago

Thats almost as bad as using wikipedia as source for a college term paper. Back to reality, I also would like to know who is buying all that microsoft "junk". If turning a huge profit every quarter after quarter after quarter isn't good enough, well then lets just say there aren't many good companies anymore. I would say there brand in not dying but it is not growing like wall street would like it too. No poll numbers will make me change my mind. Until I see profits fall, and you know the company show a loss per share like some companies have, I don't think there is anything to worry about. You see for some reason wall street, in their infinite wisdom, would rather bet on growth than solid earnings year after year. That is why we had the dot com bubble. They bet on possibilities and possible growth over actual earnings. How many dot com stocks dumped because they couldn't turn a profit but there shares had incredible growth during a short time? I just love how people get emotionally attached to a company either positively or negatively. Numbers are numbers. No different than Walmart, all they do is turn huge profits yet their stock sits between 47-57 all the time. I will take the profits of MS and Walmart over just about anyone, no matter if their stock sits and does nothing. They do pay a dividend you know.

MAJ0R2851d ago

I think that article was in terms of new technology

bustamove2851d ago

...Just don't bother. People don't read these days.

Christopher2851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

There's a difference between a dying brand and a dying consumer brand.

People should really read the article from CNN. It's not about Microsoft suddenly not making a profit from OS and Office software sales. It's about everything else.

lowcarb2851d ago

It's in a haters blood to always hate.

Fishy Fingers2851d ago

Haha, what? That is rubbish. But anyway where's the hate? Not here and not in the CNN article. Reading more than a headline can make a difference.

lowcarb2851d ago

I was replying to Omega thank you. Why so defensive fishy? Ha what?

Fishy Fingers2851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

Haha, dude, I think your were being defensive, pointing at the non-existent "haters". Everyone else was just conversing the topic.

plb2851d ago
