What in the World Happened to Single Player?

Game Podunker Nolund writes, "Assuming you've been a gamer before World of Warcraft came out, you know all sorts of great single player games (and if you're anything like me, more than a handful of them will be on the Super Nintendo). Games like Chrono Trigger, Knights of the Old Republic, Kingdom Hearts, etc. Some franchises you may have grown up with, such as The Legend of Zelda or the greatest platformer of all time (and probably the most recognizable face in the world of gaming) Super Mario..."

multi player has really bit into the single player market

ryuzu2600d ago (Edited 2600d ago )

I'd say that is the wrong way round.

Historically games were multiplayer affairs, with sp being a small portion so really SP gaming has bitten into the traditional multiplayer market.

Card games, boardgames all mostly multiplayer. Then look at video games - some of the most popular arcade games were mutli - fighters, racers - even Space Invaders got a muliplayer variant and the largely SP arcade games were really multiplayer due to the scoreboard competitive element.

Home console games were single player since they lacked the technology for networked games and not every game warranted split screen multi.

It's only the early to mid 90's where people played significant amount of single player. Now things are back to how they always were - people gaming with other people.

the thing about the multiplayer is that its a wonderfull experience, its good to know that there are other ppl in the world who love to share the same passion about a certain game by playing it online , but the SP is where its all about , i mean you cant get the same experience of uncharted 2 sp or infamous sp by playing them online

God of War 3
Infamous 1 (and in the future 2)
Uncharted 1 and 2
and MGS4 happened...

They all have awesome single player campaigns

the offline multiplayer is already dead. rip.

The Matrix2600d ago

That is a good point. Remember pong? The first huge video game? Multiplayer only.

but I have so much more fun playing with others than I ever do playing single player games. Gaming for me has always been about rivalry between your friends and such. Even single player games that were meant to be single player games, I always had friendly competition from my friends. Multiplayer gaming is just an extension of that. Any single player games I have ever played, usually get put on the shelf and rarely played.

Gaming is more fun when you can enjoy it with someone else.

sp>multiplayer

always.
I'd take games like KH or Zelda over online shooters, mmorpgs, and just about every other online game

v1c1ous2599d ago

MP isn't limited to just shooters or mmorgps.

look at demon's soul. or better yet, look at any sp game that gave you the option of brining a 2nd player with you by using a 2nd controller.

of course sometimes you just want to play by yourself, and that's fine too.

These experiences are too scarce ...

co-op campign > single player campign.

I prefer playing games with people. Sp is cool if it has a good story, but the amount of games this gen that actually have a good story (imo) is so very very small. Some of the games that a majority of users on this site think have good stories, I do not, but I do watch a lot of television and cinema, so that might have something to do with inability to be impressed by most gaming stories these days.

Out of the games I have played this gen, the only stories I have actually found impressive are Red Dead Redemption, Bioshock, Fallout 3 (I preferred the side mission stories to the actual campaign) and Metal Gear Solid 4. All that considering I have 42 retail ps3 games, the majority of them being very highly rated games.

gtamike2600d ago

god of war 3 is an epic single player game!!!!!!!!!

NecrumSlavery2600d ago

inFamous
Heavy Rain
Uncharted 1 & 2
Heavenly Sword
Ratchet and Clank Future trilogy
Flower
FFXIII
Fallout
Castelvania
Enslaved
Vanquish
Arkham Asylum
Alan Wake
Mass Effect 2

They are there. Where the hell are people looking?

UltimateIdiot9112599d ago

Valkyria Chronicles
Assassin Creed 2
Star Wars Force Unleashed

and if you want to count the DS and PSP, they have a boatload.

Multiplayer is great but I don't think every game out there needs it. But I'm open for co-op multiplayer if it works with the story.

BannedForNineYears2599d ago

Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. :D
Just beat New Vegas last night. ^_^

theonlylolking2599d ago

@harrykid32
LOL fallout having a good story mode? Thats a laugh.

Just buy a PS3 and your singleplayer needs will be there waiting for you.

IrishYamato2600d ago

Personally, i wouldnt touch multiplayer with a 9ft 12" pole.

steve30x2599d ago

Im with you. Ive tried Multi Player in a few different games and I didnt enjoy it at all.

Please dont disagree with me because my personal experience of multi player isnt good. There is absolutely no reason to disagree with my experience.

stuntman_mike2599d ago

its rare i play a multi-player game nowadays, but i play the odd few. thing is i lose interest in multi quiet quick. mazza kart and animal crossing are 2 i play multi on because they are such a laugh. also the odd medal of honour online.

but i would prefer a great story over that any day.
