PC Gaming: Powered by Steam?

Game Podunker Nolund writes, "If you are a PC gamer, you have undoubtedly heard of a little website called Steam. For those of you that have not heard of the engine, Steam is an online distributor, developed by the Valve Corporation released in 2003. As of 2010, there are over 1,200 games available through Steam and well over 30 million active accounts [1]. There are many publishers that products on Steam, including Bethesda, Electronic Arts, LucasArts, Square Enix, and many others. Steam is available in 21 different languages, and is offered on both Mac OS and Microsoft Windows..."

Steam 4tw, that is all, good day.

Steam isn't just an online distributor, it's a full-fledged platform as well. It has friends, voice chat, servers that devs can use for multiplayer, a cloud for syncing your save games, etc.

I even use steam for non-steam games due to chat features. Asides Starcraft 2 i have hardly made a retail purchase in the last 3 years. over 100games on steam now.

Perjoss2851d ago

i find that quite strange as the prices on steam are more often higher than retail, which i find insane as you dont get box or printed instructions etc. The steam sales are amazing but apart from that i never buy games on steam just because they are a rip off.

Zinc2851d ago

@Perjoss - I'm confused... have you been on Steam? Where in retail can you get 20 games for 19.95?

When they do their bundles - which is all the time - you get so much value for dollar spent, I find it hard to justify traditional purchasing from a box store. ( Blizzard games excluded)

Many of the packages are for games less than 2 or 3 years old. How can you go wrong with that?

Perjoss2851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

that's not what i meant, im talking about new games releases, I have no reason to buy a brand new game on steam when usually its 5 or 10 £'s more expensive than a boxed version. Like i said, the steam sales are amazing but new releases are a bit of a robbery.

I cant speak for all regions, but steam UK is more expensive than amazon or shopto by quite a lot.

You can go to the store buy a game and then transfer it to Steam, that way my games and graphic cards auto update it's drivers. The sales specials and deals are beyond fantastic, great community and Steam gives away free stuff from time to time like the popular game Alien Swarm.

"Well, if you are a PC gamer (a dying brand in its own right as technology advances)"
why did the editor have to ruin this article with this stupid comment?

AMD sold over 25 million DX11 GPU's in 12 months.
PS3 39 million in 5 years
360 43 million in 6 years

Substance1012851d ago (Edited 2851d ago )

Lets not forget AMD has a smaller share of the GPU market and it probably sold DX10 GPUs at the same time as well. Hence you can atleast double those figures if you had in Nvidia.

Teamfortress 2 just got updates due to halloween, its awesome a 3yr old game is so well supported. I see no reason to invest in antoher FPS.

Just bought Metro 2033 66% off for $13.60 on Steam. :D

Steams my one stop shop for PC gaming. It's has everything I'd ever want in one easy to use place.

Only game I havent bought through Steam is Black Ops, because it's £40 for the DD or I can buy it in a shop for £30 (makes no sense I know).
