Without Miyamoto, is Nintendo's Future in Innovation Dead?

Over the current hand held and console generation Nintendo has become known as the great innovator in the industry. With the introduction of motion controls becoming more than simply a fad, and adding dual screens with a touch pad to hand helds, there is plenty of evidence both in hardware and hardware sales that Nintendo is extremely creative, and people love their stuff. It's an easy argument and debate to win. However, even with all the new bells and whistles for control innovation, is Nintendo actually changing up their software to be as innovative as the hardware?

it could be but when that happen, they will clone him XD

qface642795d ago (Edited 2795d ago )

not really
miyamoto is just the star player of the team if the star player is gone it doesn't mean the team is dissolved

mikeslemonade2795d ago

Nintendo's innovation has long since been dead. Nintendo is just milking the same old stuff because you gamers like it so much.

qface642795d ago

sounds like your talking about the competition

grog20062795d ago

Honestly, and this is coming from a wii owner and nintendo lover, I think nintendo might be better off without him at this point. The man was a genius, but the operative word is was. Nintendo has dropped the ball as of late. The majority of their games are receiving poor reviews, they haven't created new IPs, and even though the 3DS looks amazing, it still seems that it will initially rely upon remakes.

The problem isn't just a lack of new IPs, it's an overall lack of originality when it comes to creating for the core gamer. It's hard to imagine nintendo not existing, but it's becoming easier and easier to imagine them becoming irrelevant to the core gaming market. If this is the direction they want to take, so be it- I'm a fan, not a CEO- I don't make those decisions. However, if they're going to say that they want to go back to creating for the core gamer as well, then they are going to have to do much better than this.

As stated, I love nintendo, but not quite enough to lie for them. I haven't bought a new game for wii since metroid: other m; before that the last thing I bought was Monster Hunter Tri. As for the future, I don't even know any wii games coming up that capture my interests. I can't help but be distracted by Fable 3 and the like.

Man, Nintendo, if you are going to create for the core gamer then please, I beg of you, get on the ball and put some actions behind your words. Otherwise, it's been a nice 17 years that I've enjoyed you (we met when I was only four years old! You were six or seven, do you remember?); I guess I can't blame you for moving on to a more youthful crowd.

ChickeyCantor2795d ago (Edited 2795d ago )

". The majority of their games are receiving poor reviews"

Look i never touched, did, smelled any drugs in my entire life.
But damn that sh/t you are smoking must be good, pass me the stuff yo.

"As stated, I love nintendo, but not quite enough to lie for them"

But why would you instead, go so far to lie about them?

I want so much from Nintendo to change, but sh/t aint happening.
And ignoring their games is like missing out on some great stuff.

Bobbykotickrulesz2795d ago

The Wii has like 5 games worth playing.

3 of them feature Mario.

ChickeyCantor2795d ago

Sure, is, i mean lets force your opinion into my brain.
Do it with power, my skull is pretty thick!

DarthMoose2795d ago

Wow, I find it rare for someone not to defend every single title that comes out on the Wii nowadays, I parted ways with the wii fo now and quite sometime now and headed to the ps3, ima pick up a wii again soon for some titles I missed out on like monster hunter tri, red steel 2, no more heroes 2, donkey kong return, super mario galaxy 2, golden eye, epic mickey and metroid other M, but I have no doubt there will be future droughts again, thats why Im glad I stoped playing it for so long because now I have quite abit of games to catch up on.

AndrewRyan2795d ago

The Wii loses some respect from me and a lot of hardcore gamers when we see games like Wiifit, or Wiisports, etc etc. My Nintendo glory days were Super Nintendo and N64. Gamecube was a bad idea, Wii was a great idea, but some of the games just turn me away. 3rd party developers are too blame.

ChickeyCantor2795d ago (Edited 2795d ago )

Wait you are mad because of Wii-fit, but were okai with the "casual" games in all other generations ?

Nugundam00792795d ago

So do the PS Move and Kinect lose respect from you too? cause at this point they're pretty much doing the same thing >_>

Midori2795d ago (Edited 2795d ago )

Nintendo needs new IPs? They have more franchises than the amount of games some companies have made in their entire history. I'll just name a few that have been featured/are coming this generation. Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Golden Sun, Pokemon, Wario, StarFox, Excite, Punch-Out!!, Kid Icarus, Battalion Wars, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Sin and Punishment, Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros., Chibi-Robo, Custom Robo, Starfy, Big Brain Academy, Disaster (Day of Crisis), Endless Ocean, Captain Rainbow, Rhythm Heaven, Pikmin, ArtStyle, Nintendogs, Elite Beat Agents, Steel Diver, Electroplankton, Magical Starsign, Hotel Dusk, Trace Memory, ASH, Fossil Fighters, Pilot Wings...
Huff...huff...that's like 40 or something. That's not even going into sub-franchises like Metroid Prime, Mario Kart, Yoshi, etc. Nintendo has TOO MANY IPs. -_-

I'm not gonna bother disproving the rest since it would take too long. If you don't like the games Nintendo releases, that's one thing. More than 10 of the things I listed are new IPs this generation. Just don't confuse "Nintendo doesn't make games I like" with "Nintendo doesn't make new IPs or old ones."

Long story short, Nintendo makes new IPs, AND releases many old ones. Your opinion of their quality is one thing, but that is indisputable.

Vizion262795d ago

The majority of Nintendo games receive poor reviews? LOL Stay off the drugs, man.

Most of the top rated games this generation for Wii and DS are by Nintendo.

Gue12795d ago

Miyamoto is Nintendo IMO. Or at least 80% of it...

grog20062795d ago

Is that a good thing though? I mean, it's a matter of opinion so I ask out of curiosity: are you happy with the direction nintendo has taken? Review scores aside, how many wii games have been truly excellent in a core gamer market? And anyway you slice it, the core market is important. The core defines what is a 'gaming console' and what is a toy.

kaveti66162795d ago

Games made by Nintendo for Nintendo are usually excellent. Third party shovelware made by Ubisoft is not Nintendo's fault.

Urahara2795d ago

Nintendo, and japanese game makers for that matter, don't even know what innovation means anymore. All they can do is follow a formula that says if something works don;t make new, just recycle the IP to death with countless sequels and spin-offs. They need to take a chance and stop relying on the formula before people stop buying and they are no longer making money period.

grog20062795d ago

Agreed. The evidence is in the stocks. I wouldn't say they are losing money, per se, but they certainly are performing below par.

How dare you use logic against these holes they seem to dig!
How very dare you!

GuyManDude2795d ago

Look at Mario-centered games:

Donkey Kong
Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 2
Super Mario Bros 3
Dr Mario
Mario's Time Machine
Super Mario Land
Super Mario Land 2
Super Mario World
Super Mario World 2
Super Mario RPG
Mario 64
Paper Mario
Super Mario Sunshine
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
New Super Mario Bros.
Super Paper Mario
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2

20 games, and that's not including Mario Kart, Golf, Tennis, Strikers, Party, Olympics, etc. and all the re-releases on GBA, DS, etc. With those it's probably closer to 40.

thelifatree2795d ago (Edited 2795d ago )

I haven't even liked mario since Mario 64. But.

The Star Wars Games.

Call of Duty hasn't existed near as long as mario

big_silky2795d ago

last count i saw said there were over 200 games featuring mario.

GuyManDude2795d ago

You listed several ports, expansion packs, and phone games. I count at least 7, bringing your total down to 11 in 8 years. I only listed console (18) and handheld (2) Mario games.

But if you want to include every game where COD is featured, I could do the same with Mario. With re-releases, ports, etc. that number comes in at about 210.

Or how about this:

2004: 7 Mario games
2005: 11 Mario games

COD did 18 "titles" in 8 years. Nintendo managed 18 Mario titles in 2.

jneul2795d ago

sorry but everyone knows that mario is the most milked game ever, go look it up on wikipedia just how many games have mario in it, and that is even over cod which is starting to become really disgusting having one per year!!

new I.P's created by Sony
Uncharted
Resistance
Infamous
LBP
Modnation Racers
Demon Souls

new I.Ps' created by nintendo
The Wii-Range (WiiMusic, WiiFit etc)

even I much prefer the N64 and gamecube days, nintendo just seem to be milking more and more nowadays, I WISH THEY WOULD CREATE SOMETHING NEW WHICH IS NOT CASUAL AND HAS A PLAY TIME OF ABOUT 1 DAY BEFORE YOU GET BORED!!

Mahr2795d ago

I actually wish Nintendo would milk its franchises more. Been waitin' six years for a new Pikmin. :-(

tunaks12795d ago

"new I.P's created by Sony
Uncharted
Resistance
Infamous
LBP
Modnation Racers
Demon Souls "

infamous is developed by Sucker Punch Productions, they aren't 1st party

Demon Souls is developed by From Software, they've made games on the wii, and 360

We are already seeing sequels to those ips you listed. If sony was in the game industry we would have seen milking of those ips.

More Marios,Zeldas and Metroids is a bad thing? This gen is retarded.

nintendo has a lot of creative staf, and it would be silly to ignore them.

eji anouma is the director of the 3d zeldas
The dev team behind mario
Sakamoto
all of retro's staff
and every single nintendo developer
Project Sora
Iwata (created Kirby)

ChickeyCantor2795d ago
