Ten Years Ago, FPS History Was Made

It's hard to believe, but it's actually ten years since GoldenEye was released on the N64. It was groundbreaking game on all fronts; visuals, weapons, controls, and of course, multiplayer.

The interesting part is, GoldenEye was barely marketed, and when it was shown at E3 a few months earlier, it received almost no attention at all. It took everyone by surprise when it was released, getting perfect a score from many publications, and went on to sell 8 million copies worldwide. It is undoubtedly one of the greatest game ever made, and holds a special place in many gamers' hearts.

This game is the reason I even play FPS. Best multiplayer game I ever experience(back then) with lots of choices of weapons.

only 007 game that got my respect

ALI-G3742d ago

Memories, my first digital murder was in Goldeneye. And now I got no idea how many digital characters I have killed.

This is Rares IP, hope they put it up on xbox live soon, with online multiplayer. ;)

I was actually playing this a couple of days ago. Maybe I'll go play it again. It's definitely a classic.

Venom_Blood3742d ago

Cool, I was watching some 007 movies 2 days ago. nice game this was

Dr Pepper3742d ago

Yeah, and then after that I put in 007 The World is Not Enough for N64. It just wasn't the same. :(

MK_Red3742d ago

While it was a masterpiece, I've got to disagree. For me FPS History was made by Doom2, followed by Half Life and Unreal Tournoment. Golden Eye was a true classic but I love UT, HL and Doom 1&2 more.

risk3742d ago

ut brought FPS to a new genre of speed.

Bnet3433742d ago

Don't know about Doom or Half Life 1, but Unreal Tournament was the trend setter for me. That's what got me into FPS's.

Rooted_Dust3742d ago (Edited 3742d ago )

UT was one of the greatest Multiplayer FPS's of all time, it went beyond what was generally just death match multiplayer. HL revolutionized the way FPS relayed stories, through the eyes of the player, instead of cutscenes or pre-mission outlines. It also introduced scripted sequences, which brought games an almost cinimatic quality. The reason most don't recognize these games or their qualities is because untill recently games like these could only be found exclusivly on PCs.

@ MK

I agree that DOOM series was important to the FPS genre, but those games were still in the "introduction" phase of FPS's. Goldeneye took the FPS genre to the next level with solid controls, great weapon and map selection, as well as classic characters and character models to play with. UT is also great, but they just built upon what previous FPS had already established.

We can always agree to disagree.

GOLDENEYE WAS/IS THE SHIZ!!! Great Memories!

MK_Red3742d ago

Good point. Doom was in introduction phase of FPS's. But I still believe games like UT, Quake and HL (Counter Strike and homebrew) were also big part of FPS history.

Agree to disagree :)

But I agree that GoldenEye was THE history for console FPS games and a true masterpiece.
Hoping for a day that original team of GoldenEye (Which has lost many of its key members) makes a real sequel to GoldenEye as well as the lovely Perfect Dark.

On a more personal note, While I do believe that GoldenEye is a true classic and the best FPS on N64, my favorite FPS is Turok 2! I just love that game.

BubblesDAVERAGE3742d ago

This was the first console FpS to gain attention. Rare where are you now..

Mr Murda3742d ago

It's pretty much a big disappointment for such a legendary developer to be doing what they are now. I've played Viva Pinata and enjoyed it, same with Conker, but PDZ for the 360 was a disappointment and really made me wonder what happened to RARE. The more I think about it though, Goldeneye and PDZ were premier for their time, but now you have shooters like Halo and Unreal Tournament/Championship, which have reset the "bar".
