Final Fantasy Versus XIII: Would Xbox 360 Release Hurt PS3 Users?

Product-Reviews writes: After the exclusivity saga involving Final Fantasy XIII, gamers shouldn’t be too suprised to hear fresh rumors that Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be appearing on the Xbox 360, despite initial perception that it would be a PS3 exclusive.

Square-Enix console exclusives used to mean a lot more special a few years ago, but not now since they have opened their arms to multiplatform. Because of this, you have to wonder if Square-Enix has lost a fair portion of their once-die hard fan base.

As a PS3 owner, would you be upset if the game came to Xbox 360, or have you stopped caring after FFXIII?

Personally, I don't care about it's exclusivity as long as Versus doesn't get delayed till like 2030 or whatever.

I doubt we'll be seeing Versus in US/Europe till 2012 and Japan will probably get it by the end of next year.

We the fans are scared of FF Versus sucking but have hope because of Nomura. The creator of Kingdom Hearts with the staff that created FFVII gives us hope that the battle system and story will be good! Also the setting is different and the characters are far more mature than FFXIII. Anyways just by watching the CGI it's obvious that there will be a lot more interaction with NPC's and a far more interesting story.

Even if it still sucks it's kind of hard to suck more than FXIII (I could be wrong though, I didn't think anything could be worse than XII)

A few weeks ago I saw some fanboys making comments saying nothing good comes out of SE anymore! I wanted to send a sarcastic comment considering that some of them were the ones saying how great Versus was going to be, just to point out their ignorance, but was in a place where I couldn't make a comment!

I see that your a little slow so ill break it down for you. FF13 was exclusive to the ps3 at first, it had extra content, towns, places to wander off and explore, more story, it was almost a real FF. But then Microsoft gave Squeenix a fat check, so Squeenix had to fit the game on several disc, which after 3 disc Squeenix has to pay royalties for, so instead of making the game like 8 disc, they had to cut out most of the game just to put it on the xbox platform. How do I know this you might ask? Its cause Squeenix themselves said they cut out so much content that they had enough to make a whole other game with. It came straight from the horses mouth.

While it doesn't explicitly say that huge content was cut because of DVD9 it does heavily hint it.

Regardless, I doubt the content reductions have anything to do with it's bad gameplay. I think the gameplay was always destined to be mediocre.

Although, the removals of towns etc could have been due to DVD9.

The reality of it is that FF didn't have time to include the features it wanted, stuff needed to be cut. They were working on this game for far more the projected length of time which adds to production cost.

Higher production cost that couldn't be made back in retail. Probably one of the reasons it went to 360.

I've long lost faith in SE and FFVs XIII but still hope it can be something to redeem SE. If this game goes multiplat, the chances of me buying this game will significantly be lower. You have to be a fool to think DVD9 has no impact on a game with more of an open world style (it better be open because if it's not, I don't think too many people are happy after FFXIII). Don't even bring FO3 and GTA4 into the discussion about how it's open and can fit onto a single DVD9. Those game looks like vomit and outdated. I expect breathtaking cutscenes and graphic from a FF title, not puke.

Also, that 1 million in sales for the 360 is almost meaningless in the big picture. This is an FF title, and by FF standards, the total sales doesn't even show a big impact. All it shows is that some fans didn't have to buy a new console or are achievement whores. Had the sales shown a 50/50, then it might have said something. It didn't, in an area of 360 dominated players, PS3 outsold the 360 version 3 to 1.

SE, don't think of your fanbase as an abused wife who keeps coming back even after you constantly lie and two time everyone. Sooner or later, you won't have anyone by your side.

If SE cares about the long term sustainability of their company along with their reputation, I hope they smarten up and make the right choice.

on ps3 look what happened to the other version of ff13 like someone posted 50 percent content cut. and failed to live up to its hype and downgrade was involved also took longer to come out for west release of ff13 . should had been out for retails late 08 early o9 to buy instead we had to wait till 2010 even late 08 the ps3 version was 90 percent completed they didnt start work on xbox version until after. fast forward 2010 the ps3 and xbox 360 version came out the same time . if vs goes multi then nomura vision will be thrown out because alot of content will not be in the retail version. just like what happened to ff13 then ffvs 13 graphics will have to be downgraded again i dont think nomura will be pleased . and if it goes multi then it will be the end of square for me and vs 13 will failed to live up to its hype if it goes multi . wouldnt be suprised square goes bankrupt

In short.. yes. People will be upset. Both fanboys and regular PS3 gamers. Well, at least if those people are aware of the situation with FFXIII going to the Xbox 360. (Just read comments #1.2 and #3.1.2 for a summary).

I think if Versus XIII is developed solely to PS3 specs first with no other platform consideration, that would be perfectly fine. But if a console using DVD9 storage is added to the equation during development, say hello to a game comprimised for the lowest common denominator.

That is how it would hurt PS3 users, as they would be receiving a lesser game. There's no guarantee that would happen with Versus, but it's pretty damn likely looking at how Final Fantasy XIII turned out.

To be honest, its not even the fact of it being on 360, its truly the fact that Square Enix lost their touch. Yes I do prefer it stay on PS3 only just to see how well it goes and I'm use to the traditional Playstation Final Fantasies but I must say that 360 is not much of the blame, its really Square Enix, They suck now and believe me, I use to be a huge Square fan from since 1997-2004, then I began losing interest and faith.

i just dont want content cut again. from what i could recall, there was enough content cut from ffxiii that it could have been its own standalone game. Im not putting the blame squarely on the 360, so much as putting the blame on SE for making compromises to a game that could have been/were game changing. Though it is easy to blame the limited disc space of the DVD, at the end of the day, SE made the decision to develop on 360, made the decision to cut content, and thus deliver a game that probably could have been much better.

SE still made some good money from that 360 release. Its hard to ignore that 1 million+ that may otherwise not have been sold had the game been exclusive only. Not to mention that the game didn't even release for the 360 in Japan yet. As far as sales go, it seemed to be a win/win/win for Square, Sony, and Microsoft in one way or another.

but they are trying to capture the hearts of americans by catering to what they think the american console owners, the 360 gamers, want..

Agreed. Aside from the 360 limiting the PS3 from making FFXIII the game it should have been, what bothers me most is how they always decide on it at the last minute. I mean, FACK FF13 could have been released a lot earlier WITH more content if it wasn't for the multi-platform decision, and the same thing could be true for the upcoming Versus. Money and a wider scale of attention is all Square-Enix cares about nowadays. It's pretty much clear to anybody that the Jrpg market on homeconsoles is doomed. At this point whether a Tales game goes multiplatform or a Final Fantasy game goes multi makes no difference: the very few niche titles left for homeconsoles will go to PS3, the remaining big hitters in development on both PS3 and 360. This until 3DS comes and steamrolls us all.

When a game exclusive it means a developer can cater to one console and focus on using the technology to it's fullest but with multiplatform that just isn't possible.

We hate the 360 not only because it takes away exclusives, but it also holds the PS3 back from making games so much more awesome than they are. 360's capabilities are so weak compared to what the PS3 can do, but companies are cringing because achieving the full potential of a game can be quite straining. It's only a matter of time though until all games are as amazing as Uncharted 2..so laugh while you can XBAKS.
