Microsoft is gearing up for a massive marketing push to launch Kinect -- a controller-free Wii-killer for the Xbox -- and blow away the competition come Christmas.
May be they have 6 million ready for launch, rather than the 3 mil everyone is talking about. He will be bombarded with news Kinect new this week. Brace yourselves. Here comes Kinect.
Kinect is going to sell like crazy and will be impossible to find there is going to be lots of money in buying them and selling on Ebay
Yeah, a lot of people are gunna be taken advantage of on Ebay. Whether people on this site like it or not...Kinect WILL sell. Whether it will be a good product..I honestly can't wait to find out. "500 million dollars for marketing kinect is pretty much like a overkill Hopefully it pays off." I think it will. They HAVE to market Kinect primarily with Dance Central. Its the most promising Kinect game I've seen so far. A Kinect/Dance Central commercial during Dancing with the Stars is pure genius. Getting Bieber in Kinect ads is very smart as well. @Agent-86- I wasn't aware you already played the final version.
Actually, I think after X-mas, there will probably be a lot of them selling on eBay; after people realizes that it doesn't work as advertised and didn't live up to the hype. Just another one of those gimmick items that end up being sold or put in the closet after a few months and brought out on a rare occasions.
Balmer looks like a bald version of the snake-oil seller in Red Dead. With 500 mill on marketing MS could sell fire in hell
and it doesn't work as advertise, can they just return it to where they bought it in the first place?
Or izit already the Emperor of the Inter Galactic Empire in Star Wars? That is one sick resemblance.
and you are happy with MS abandoning hardcore for casuals. thats hardcore fanboyism.
However, its hilarious that a device that we all know isn't revolutionary, has no library of non-webcam/eyetoy games, and can't even do basic Wii-Rip-Offs' is going to be sold to people that think it works as some Minority Report device of the future to interact with Milo with. Good for Microsoft, they are proving fanboys/critics everywhere right. Kinect is an empty promise, with no game types being able to work on it minus "jump now! swat here!". But uh, 500 million.Im sure no 360 fan is going to agree 500 million makes a shit ton of content for the 360. So I wont even mention that fact. Enjoy Gears 3, Joyride, and a more expensive XBL gang :). 500 million. Microsoft officially spends more on image & advertising than gaming content. Sure guys, all Wii owners in the world will drop wii's for a device with nothing to play. Thats what is supposed to happen right?
Actually, it reminds me of the "I'm a PC/I'm a Mac" ad where PC is counting out wads of money: advertising, advertising, advertising, fix Vista; advertising, advertising, advertising, fix Vista. Then Mac asks why are you putting so few dollars into fixing Vista and PC says you're right...lets put it all into advertising. Sounds like MS is doing the same thing with Kinect. http://www.youtube.com/watc...
LOL I just thought of the same thing Agent. But you know what else Microsoft spent 500 million dollars marketing? Kin. And that was one of the biggest consumer electronics failures I think ever. But it does prove that Microsoft puts all their money into advertising.
I remember when they apple tried to force ms to remove their "PC finder" ads from T.V. And when market studies showed the the PC character was more east to relate to then the mac guy. And all the advertising apple had spent on their own shoddy products, like the original ipods. Apple and co are such hypocrites.
M$ sure cares about gaming...investing alot of money getting their product out there and buying expensive air time and advertisements. Yes it's true it's all for the might dollar but all of gaming comes out on top because of M$...especially Sony and Nintendo who are doing NOTHING right now but hanging on like parasites on a whale. I have a question...where is Sony in all of this. In the corner telling every one to buy 3Dtv's for thousands and showing the same level of KZ for the 100th time. Is GT still gonna launch during all the Kinect and COD hype...good luck
Money spent on advertising does not = good products. And just because a company spends that money doesn't mean that they will get good sales. @IntheKnow M$ only help to hurt the industry with it's massive hardware failures.
TABLOIDS FOR TOMORROW
lol the ppl tht disagrees are fanboys... OT: ppl said move wouldnt sell and no one disagreed about tht... overall this site is bs
Microsoft is really banking heavy on Kinect
"Banking" is the operative word. Half a billion dollar marketing budget! Even if it is a hugely successful product, how are they supposed to make money off this thing? Add in the R&D budget plus manufacturing costs minus retail markup and there can't be a profit there. MS must really be counting on this being a huge runaway success. And I fear for gaming if it becomes the next big thing. Luckily, I'm mostly a PC gamer, so I don't have to worry about this infecting my gaming experience.
If they have enough out there, they will be able to make the money back easily off of software sales, especially with XBLA.
there can't be a profit there. yes ther is at 150$
500 million dollars for marketing kinect is pretty much like a overkill . Hopefully it pays off .
Really? I'm hoping that it is the flop it deserves to be.
I think kinect will do just fine $500 buys you any image you want. Well it will sell like hotcakes then they will probably launch the next x360 with it built in it in 2013 at the latest. The real question is what will happen to the Wii as its sales have already started to slow, and how will move do in the wake of this advertising onslought?
That picture just makes me think of Emperor Palpatine....POWAAAARRRRRR UNLIMITED POWAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR
This is what I think of
you know i guarantee that if they made a halo game for kinect, they would deffinitely make good sales on kinect. just saying. you know its true. im not trying to flaimbait im just pointing out the obvious.
They don't just want to sell Kinects, they want Kinect to sell more 360's. This is why they are so focused on the causals over the core gamers with Kinect. It is because they have not been able to break into that market pre-Kinect. If they can add casuals to their base, they will grow the market very quickly.
can you imagine how to play a Halo game for kinect ?
of course loads will buy it but it will end up like the power glove lol. they might end up using the controller along with it in the end
I think it will definitely sell well but I just hope that if it is a success, that MS really gets devs to create something amazing that can win me over as a hardcore gamer. Also hope that they dont just brush off their regular software support that doesnt use kinect.
wow really? Kinect better be nothing short of revolutionary to justify this amount of cash
That's why they are spending the cash. It's no where near what they said it would be,but luckily people are idiots. It's proved time and time again, advertise it lots and it will sell, especially to the easily led Americans.
other companies put their money in their tech to ensure it works.. like the nypost article said. microsfot did this with the xbox 360.. while commercially successful.. its an unfinished hardly working hardware.. if a portion of that money went into quality assurence it would not need to be replaced and updated constantly.. they probably expect to release new kinect revisions every year and count on their fans to buy a new one every year.. workd for them sof ar..
ms will take a huge fall for this
I think they have a hit on their hands. In the UK preorders are enormous(we basically copy the US,mugs that we are).I've spoken with local Game managers and the preoerders are huge.It will sell but I think it will be the next balance board,it will just end up gathering dust.
Hmm 500 million dollar marketing campaign.....I wonder if any major game sites are going to risk losing all that advertising revenue by giving it a poor rating.
I've actually had the chance to try Kinect. Didn't feel right.
Thats it ... i'm buying it .. and selling it on eBay
Imagine MS spent just 200 million on new AAA IPs, just IMAGINE the awesomeness! Now I'll go cry at reality
will be $20 in garage sales in trailer parks all over america in less than 2 years....just be patient, plus, you can but up all those shovelware games for $2 a piece and a lady with 7 kids will give you a free vcr or racoon if you spend over $50!! lol....i hope this lame shit flops so hard....hop around in your living room, monkey....pretend you are about to go bowling, pretend to be fishing, pretend you know how to play ping pong like a real human..... when i play video games i wanna do something i can't do in real life, the fucking wii is to blame for all this nonsense.
I agree with you about blaming the Wii for all this crap. Because of that toy masquerading as a video game machine, the gaming companies now have to cater to the casual audience. I liked it much better when games were for gamers. This casual crap is the plague.
I know I rag Kinect all the time but now I'm concerned that if it fails, the shareholders will put an end to MS games division. They are already fed up with the billions in losses. Kinect sux but 360 is great - I'd hate for MS to leave the console business.
Nothing Microsoft makes can ever live up to the massive hype they give it. You would think people would have learned that by now. BTW everyone keeps saying Kinect hss massive preorders. Can you tell me what you mean by 'massive'? Have Kinect preorders reached millions? Or hundreds of millions. Or billions? The way everyone boasts as if they have numbers to back this up. If preorders have reached 500,000 for example that could be considered massive to a retailer but wouldn't be even close to target sales.
Hmmm, that Coke promotion starts soon right Sony? .........Right?
$500 million to market Kinect. That's just... *sigh* Imagine all the games that could have been funded with that money.
with that money, Ensemble, ACES Game Studio, FASA Studio, etc. could still be making awesome games.
10 AAA titles AND Rare would still be available to make games not shovel ware.
at least they market their stuff....
I don't know why people are so upset about this. After all, this just shows me MS is serious about the support for Kinect. They won't let it just be a half @ssed release!
People should be upset because MS isn't using this money to make games. They spend all this money on a device that in the end they will barely support themselves. They have almost no first party studios, which means they are basically paying other developers to make games for them. They should establish a few studios, and get moving on developing killer games for the Xbox. Otherwise they'll just have games that all end up like Mass Effect 2. Their is almost no reason to buy a console that has no real exclusive games (and I think a lot of love for Live has waned since the price hike that happened despite the fact that PSN has been closing the gap for free). You could argue that Kinect games will be exclusive, but from what I've seen they'll also be crap.
That would be enough for 20+ AAA titles.
Lol so true. Microsoft just doesn't work like that though. They're not in this business for the gamers
Not sure why people are putting Move on the same level as Kinect. Sony hasn't abandoned us to make 'casual crap' as you put it. They still have a stellar line up and Move is optional. You don't have to buy it or any of the games and Sony is not holding a gun to your head and forcing it down your throat. Microsoft has already jumped on the Kinect train and left core gamers at the station with almost no non Kinect exclusives until much later. In short Sony is still serving both sides as per usual while Microsoft is focusing on Kinect mostly. So don't put us PS3 owners in the same boat as you. While you pet Skittles, pretend to hold things and try to dance, we will be racing offroad vehicles, building games, fragging Helgasts, drinking magic potions, driving expensive cars and joining Sweet Tooth's gang. Enjoy.
Why do you and several others here love to bash Kinectimals? Obviously its not a game geared towards teens or adults. My 6 year old will love it.BTW, Is Eyepet "hardcore"? Move also has "try to dance" games too. You honestly think it will be better holding a wand or two as opposed to the game grading your feet movements too? I can see familes getting into Kinect. When my wife and kid have their fun petting Skittles, dancing, and joyriding, I can still blow things heads off with my controller later.
What a disgusting amount of money to sell on advertising instead of producing games. How can anyone defend it?
Microsoft launched Xbox in July 2000 with a $500 million marketing campaign, but part of that went to subsidies to make the hardware more affordable. Ok now where does it state that they will be pushing 500 Million for kinect lol!!!
I can't wait for Kinect. Seriously, I think this is a good new device and it will create major buzz this holiday season. 500m sounds like a lot, but it is not if you are MS. The EDD reported a 700 million USD profit last year and is profitable since 2008. So they really can afford this. And the good part is that the marketing for Kinect is not limited to this one device. At a $150 pricepoint, the hardware is most likely profitable or AT LEAST breaking even. And of course MS sell Kinect + consoles + games + XBL memberships with this marketing budget. ESPN and Kinect is a great move to get people paying for XBL gold. With Halo Reach and CoD Black Ops there are two games that will sell gold memberships to the core gamers alone. Maybe even the coop for Fable III will do something in this direction as well. The 3 million target for MS this year means 500 million USD revenue for Kinect alone. And people want to play games with it and maybe watch ESPN or play games online.
More like a 'Xbox360-killer' L0L
This thread is full of PS3 fanboys giving there 2 cents and spin. 500 million is a lot but don't get angry at MS for doing something Sony could not afford too do. Nobody knows the amount of money going into 360 or Kinect software so all this spin above about wasting money is irrelevant. Love it or hate it this device is going to sell very good and offer exclusive software that actually works.
This is an just Eye Toy for 360 with infra red, with that said thought, I do agree that MS has more potential to make this work with their deep wallets and massive advertising campaigns, but in the end this device is nowhere near as wow as Microsoft wants you to believe it is, and quite frankly I don't think it really appeals to families and casual gamers or to core 360 gamers with the current software line up...only time will tell.
I'm not sure how close it will come to the original idea but will give it time and see. Now as far as appeal goes time will tell as well and according to MS (TGS)core games are on the way next year.
it will sell well... the notion of no controller is going to bring a lot of new gamers (I think parents buying for their younger kidz). The economy is gonna be impt. to see if the parents are gonna dump that much $$ on a gift for the family
I don't get it?! Why keep saying the same thing like a whining girlfriend?! Oh I forgot, MS is the Anti-Christ of the industry. Fact is to have a game device for kids and adults to enjoy is a failure itself. Oh sorry, It it dosen't have Sony's name on it, it's crap. Fact it Sony has this tech years ago. Who's fault that they didn't stick with it and put it on the market first?! Some see the Move is just like a Wii clone. Wii came to the table wit a new way to play games. Move is better in HD over Wii. But Kinect comes without you using no controller at all to play games. So, people can be a fool and stay in denial saying Kinect won't sell. Hell, I pre-orderd my 250Gig Kinect bundle. Friday night dinner X Girlies (few drinks) X Kinect = Good Time! I'm sorry I'm not on the same level as you haters and fanboys are on. Love my PS3, 360 & Wii. Be a gamer, not a hater!!
Who really cares? I do believe everyone has the right to state if they think something is a bad idea or they believe it will not do well. Everyone in the industry puts down and scrutinizes every single thing Sony does. But everything everyone else does must be given a chance. We HAVE to give Kinect a chance or we are not true gamers people say. So where were these type of articles and protests when the PS3 was a new system and needed to be given a chance? Buy it if you want but please stop coming in here demanding that we should give Kinect a chance especially since we still haven't seen any proof that it even functions right or can do anything that is beyond what an Eyetoy did. Let's see how well it works for consumers at home before we start with the 'Wii killer' and 'Move killer' childishness.
lol at wii killer,.. Doesn't do 3percent that wii can do,..
A $500 Million campaign for this???? You how many good ways that this money could be spent?
$500 Million They could go for 10 AAA titles with $50 Million budget each and have some decent titles out. As it is Kinect games are low budget party games ripped off from EyeToy titles and should not cost more than $30 each. Or they could just give 3 Million Kinect devices away for free and spend the remainder on advertising.
