Gaming Today: Live Demo of Mass Effect Really Was Disappointing

A Gaming Today editor who saw the Mass Effect demo at PAX agrees with Destructoid's unfavorable preview. He writes that the show was disappointing to watch -- because the 20-minute demo focused too much on talking and making decisions and showed only 5 minutes of action.

However, the facial and character animations in the demo are the best the editor have seen in a game... ever, and the conversations are about as interactive as a game could get.

The editor writes that while conversations and dialogs may be fun to play, they are not too much fun for other people to watch -- the show was not very entertaining to watch, but the game could be loads of fun to play, (like Knights of the Old Republic?)

Wow, first Destructoin says Mass Effect demo was disappointing, then G4 and few others say otherwise and now GamingToday agrees with Destructoid. Either some of those people were drunk when they saw the game or they are really biased against or towards the game.

How a single demo get 2 disappointings and 2 praises? I for one, have perfect faith in this game until I saw it's bad with my own eyes and hopefully that won't happen.

The point of the article is what they show at the demo, the talking and making decision, is the kind of thing that is fun to play but not entertaining to watch. Action is fun for other people to watch; conversation is not.

That's why the SHOW is disappointing; the GAME is not.

I think Destructioid and this site only saw the PAX demo, which was probably near the beginning of the game with lots of talk, whereas the sites that are praising have seen the gunplay and the action of the game.

I think this whole thing is just because these two sites have not seen any of the game except that one part. Whereas the sites with access have seen a lot more. I think this game is still going t be great. I don't think we can go by anyones opinion who only saw it at PAX.

I did read the article and I still think they say it was disappointing. Why? Because seeing someone talk in a game and showing the social aspects of a game in demo could be really fun and interesting to watch, not just play, specially considering Mass Effect's unique dialogue system and design. They say there wasn't enough action in the demo and just beautiful animations and dialogue. Well, someone should tell them that ME is a deep RPG first and last.

And comparing Mass Effect's demo with Assassin's Creed in someway (A deep dialogue / story driven RPG with an action/adventure stealth game) is simply stupid. They say it lacked action but it should, Its a classic RPG not a shooter or action so if the action deosnt impress like Assassins Creed, its because its NOT action. What were they thinking?

UPDATE: Thanks DarthBillBoy.

That might be your opinion, but it sure as hell isn't the opinion of Gaming Today. Let me repeat this part for you:

"The editor writes that while conversations and dialogs may be fun to play, they are not too much fun for other people to watch -- the show was not very entertaining to watch, but the game could be loads of fun to play"

So stop twisting what they said.

While I never saw the presentation, everything I have seen looks great to me. I imagine it wouldnt be the best game to watch someone play. I guess we will have to wait to see whats said by these sites after a full review. Full RPG's tend to have a much slower pace to them howver that doesnt necessarily make them boring to play.

Best facial animations ever seen in a game = disappointment ?

I don't care what ANY reviewer thinks of Mass Effect, I loved KOTOR & Bioware always delivers. I think alot of folks will be eating their words in November.

"maybe it’s because these are the same folks that brought us Knights of the Old Republic" doh!

"This could just be one of those games that isn’t very entertaining to watch, but loads of fun to play." yeah like KOTOR. I dont think I will have fun watching somebody else play it.

And comparison to Assasin's Creed is pretty stupid

MK_Red3711d ago

So true.

They say the demo wasn't as jaw dropping as Assassin's Creed's and that it lack enough action. Do these people even know that the game is RPG!?

xCAPTSTONERB91x3711d ago

this is like when people give crappy movie reviews ta good movies.....mass effect will pwn

highps33711d ago

And thats what this whole game is built around. I imagine graphics will be great and so will the interaction with fake characters but the gameplay is going to bomb imo..

ktchong3711d ago

that's the whole point of Western RPG: talking to NPCs and making choices.

"However, the facial and character animations in the demo are the best the editor have seen in a game... ever, and the conversations are about as interactive as a game could get."

He said it was SOME of the best, not THE best he's ever seen in a game. Big difference there buddy.
