GT5 Delay Decision Was “Made Yesterday"

“We’re really close, but this was an executive decision that was made yesterday,” said Taku Imasaki, the North American producer for Gran Turismo 5, in a phone interview. “Realistically, we thought we had a good date. We’re not happy over here.” (Gran Turismo 5, PS3, Sony)

They even delayed the announcement of the delay?? :P (I'm kidding of course)

There isn't much people can do now. I hope they give us a reason. Right now it's "they want to create a perfect experience". Now, I assume every good developer has this expectation and I know of many who have made, what IMO, are (near) perfect experiences in much shorter time.

You may say that GT5 is much more ambitious, but I have to say that some of the games others have made had much less people and less funding yet they managed to make ambitious games.

I'm not exactly sure why GT5 requires so much time, I do get concerned that there is a hidden reason when I see a delay 20 days from launch. I'm not that majorly upset because I was never a huge fan of the game, but I know of die-hard GT fans that are majorly pissed. And I'm glad to see people not blindly defending the delay. Sometimes enough is enough, and though I respect the desire to make a perfect game I do think that toying the patience of the community comes at a price. Never dangle a carrot in front of a donkey because eventually he will kick. I worry that if the game isn't perfect it's going to get a lot of backlash over even the tiniest of flaws.

It's somewhat easier when you have complete creative freedom, like the games you've listed. Modelling 1000 cars to the millimetre, their handling, breaking, acceleration characteristics takes time (a LOT of time). Recreating 20+ tracks exactly. etc etc. This takes a huge amount of time, a huge amount of resources.

Do you realise the amount of red tape that has to be completed when dealing with other company IP?

It's easy to criticise when you dont really understand the volume of work.

But does it really take THAT much time to do all that? My comparisons may be too unfair to use, you are right that GT5 is a game based on simulating real life and not making a free game.

Honestly I don't care ultimately for the delay, it's the fact that they dangled it in front of fans for so long, and then, with only 20 days left, they delay it. I just wish they gave us a good reason because it just seems suspicious to do. I doubt it's for marketing purposes, but at the same time, what could delay it for just a month? People were more OK with a 6 month delay or a longer delay because it meant there was more to be added, but a one month delay doesn't make much sense to me.

There were bugs in the latest build, and maybe it's for issues like that. Regardless, my complaints may not mean much since I've never been a big fan. I'm not trying to antagonize anybody, but I'm just trying to say that the situation could have been handled better.

well, alpha polyphony said each premium car took something like 180 days to build. Have you seen those cars? And its not just the looks. They try and make the driving experience feel like the car in real life. All of this, everything in the game theyre trying to replicate perfectly from real life. That takes more time and research then most games where they make whatever they wanna make

But i totally agree with the anger of this delay. Its just a little bit ridiculous now

I don't think they have a good reason (from a fan perspective)to delay the game or they would have given it to us. I am not happy but what can you do?

I waited this long and I'll be damned if I am not going to be there day one and that is part of why I am mad. PD knows that its fans will buy it anyway after waiting this long. Loyalty like that should not be abused.
Christopher  +   1945d ago
***But does it really take THAT much time to do all that? ***

Not to defend PD or anything, but if you're developing to match real-world elements specific to existing items, it does tend to take a lot more time.

Other racing games that aren't necessarily attempting to match real-world specifications don't need to worry about the physics of each element as it is designed in the real world and can just fluff it up. Nor do they have to worry about the differences between what tires are being used or the struts being used and so on.

If GT5 really is matching real-world items to the physics of their world, it will take a much longer time to get this done in a manner that reflects its real-world implementation. There's also a lot more graphical work involved in texture creation and sizing. Going from 14" rims to 17" rims and on top of that designating the type of tire/tread.

Again, not to say that this is why they've extended the release date, but if the game truly reflects real-world physics I can definitely see how it would take a lot more time than a game where you can create the physics of the world based on real-world experience but not intended to match it in any way.

The problem is, many devs manage to pull off an extraordinary amount of work in far less time.

The other issue is that PD have their priorities mixed up! Make a functional game FIRST, then worry about modelling cars to the millimetre. Nobody is going to CARE if a car is a millimetre out, so long as it drives mostly realistically and is fun. You know, who cares that such and such a corner is 1 degree sharper in RL? It's unneccesary detail that might be nice to have, but doesn't justify a buggy game and an extra delay.
BulletToothtony  +   1945d ago
as much as i hate it as well this is all about $ most people buy stuff within a week of the release date.. they will make more money by releasing the game in december that it will in november..

Hideo_Kojima  +   1945d ago
But all of the 1000 cars, all of the 180 days spent on each Premium car, all of that should/must already be done.

It explains why it took 5 years but not why it got pushed back with just 20 days to go.
PS360PCROCKS  +   1945d ago
200 cars x 180 days is 36,000 divide that by 365 days and you get 99 years worth of work. Lol so you take that and figure it out to 40 cars a year over 5 years. The studio only has 110 employees according to their website. So basically 1/5 of their studio was designing just premium cars for the past 5 years. Guess that explains what's taking so long. Haha

il try to make things clear from a business perspective. Sony is getting ready to launch their 3D tvs...the delay of GT5 is pure business strategy.why? because it is the perfect game to be shown in 3D booths next to the 3D pick up GT5, and u experience it fully in 3D, ur more likely to buy the 3D tv with it...GT5 is essentially an advertisement for their 3D cant argue with Sony on that one, their a business, and their doing whats best for the company.

It takes more time because its a simulation, not an original unique game based on fantasy. If you're trying to recreate real life things, i'd imagine that takes more time and effort to perfect then, okami for example. Youre criticised on how true to life and real your game is. Okami isnt going to be criticised for not being real enough cos it has a wolf that likes to paint pictures

i see the disagrees flooding in. cmon then, tell me why im wrong....

I think you are wrong because if you model stuff after real life things(in this case real cars) you have specs from the manufacturers to go by.

And also, Polyphony have already been through a similar process 4 times before this game. It isn't the first time they make a racing simulator, you know.

I'm lucky they delayed it, I wouldn't have been able to get the game until the 20th in anyway. So I would just be being teased. Although that's not the case for most people, seriously what changes in the game can they do within 20 days?

I don't want to shout any upset fans down. Not playing GT5 isn't an option for me at this point. Really pisses me off that they have me by the short and curlies.

They probably just discovered a few bugs that needed ironing out. Hopefully it's the last delay and we see it before christmas.
Strikepackage Bravo  +   1945d ago
This is our fault
so many of you defending them saying its only been one delay, made them feel like they would be fine to delay it again.

This is why I say, it is not good to defend these companies, we as consumers need to demand only the best treatment from them, you act like a bunch of brain washed zombies and they will treat you like it, now make a stink about this people, Sony is way too nonchalant about disappointing its customers.

The fact that once again, after 6 years in development, GT5 STILL does not have a release date, shows what they think of you.
phosphor112  +   1945d ago
Here's an idea.
They probably don't have enough copies.

It would make sense.. Russia says they can't get their hands on any GT5's... preorders stopped for many sites days before hand saying "sold out."

Why all the complaints?
This game is doing things a GeForce 7900GT (the GPU on which the PS3 is based) is not supposed to do.

The resolution, frame-rate and sheer quality of the visuals seemingly defies the laws of physics.

With such a bleeding edge engine running such a complex game on such complex hardware, there's bound to be some surprise bugs here and there.

While I doubt they'll eliminate them all together, they surely wouldn't want too many videos similar to these on youtube:

Three full AAA racing games from Turn10 since Gran Turismo 4 was released on PS2. Will Forza 4 come out before GT5?

PSP games and Prologues don't count.
Steve_0  +   1944d ago

"PSP games and Prologues don't count."

Why not? In that case, Forza games don't count, just because I said so. I dont think any Forza game really competes with GT so therefore none of the games to me count as a competitor. Things like the modeling detail, lighting, 16 cars on track at once, track editor, sheer number of cars and tracks, dynamic weather and day-night cycle... Forza just isn't nearly on the same level. When they have the equivalent of GT Academy I might consider it - the huge international competitions are proof that GT is much more than a game - It's the racing experience as accurate as they strive to make it.

Have fun re-buying Forza 3 in the "Ultimate edition" form just to get some DLC which is unavailable for you to pay for, even though you gladly (and blindly) would.

EDIT: Since you lack any more bubbles, I would love for you to PM me a response - I'm looking for a laugh this morning.

Every developer knows that the word "perfect" doesn't exist within their realm. Cause in the end they will always say that things could be done differently.

Even though i'm not going to play this game. I do agree however. Im kinda surprised its taking them this long. By now they should at least have editors for almost everything. But then again, modeling a car could take time...

Oh, if it's a demand issue, then I guess Sony doesn't really care if people do cancel their preoders because there are going to be people with money "by then" to fill those cancellations by simply walking into any retail stores.
AceofStaves  +   1945d ago
Wishful thinking there? Or do you truly believe millions of people are going to cancel their preorders because of the game's first official delay in the West?

GT is just one of those gaming franchises, like Halo and Pokemon, that sell millions. The series has gotten along quite well without my money; I've never bought or played a GT game. A few nerds canceling preorders because they can't wait a little extra time will be like a rock tossed into the ocean.

I don't think GT has any reason to fear CoD. They are two entirely different games for two entirely different audiences.

I also don't think Sony would selfishly seek to maximize holiday profits for GT5 at the expense of pissing off the community like this. Maybe they have a hidden feature, maybe there is a serious internal issue, maybe they want to add finishing touches. I just wish they have a straight answer.
jc48573  +   1945d ago
^^if it's not Black Ops then I really don't know what is. There are millions of people out there and how do we know that GT is only designed for that "specific audience" you speak of.

Graey  +   1944d ago
I can't see them delaying it because of that. Personally I think COD is only popular because people all want to be in the in crowd. People all want to let others know that they are playing that, and to not play it means your not cool.

Yes I know sounds a bit crazy right. Take a look at the Iphone, the Ipad. Yes they may be great devices in their own right. But do you really think everyone has one just because they are great...or more so because its a keeping up with the joneses type of thing.

Same with Starbucks: You ever notice how people go there to read, or use their laptops to write their "novels"...seriously . Only so people can see them. Its all and ego based thing.

COD: same way...we now that no one really gives a crap about the sp of the game. Why, because it's all about the MP. Bragging rights, being the first to do something, getting all those kills, being Uber.

WOW: is a perfect example as well. I play the hell out of this game by the way. But Being Uber/Leet is not an agenda of mine.

So...that being said COD is going to sell regardless and if Sony is trying to defend against that with any game, they are going to have to push that game roughly 2 months before or after COD. COD is going to sell in the millions, but take into account its also going to be on multiple platforms.

GT5 is going to sell millions as well, and its on one platform. But also add that its also a racing game. The pinnacle of racing but still a racing game. I have no doubt COD will sell more, but GT5 is legend, COD is a fad. Not saying the game won't be good, but there is suddenly a shift from what is good and what is "in" with this series.
bunfighterii  +   1945d ago

From what I think of here's why the delay was made:
-Needed time to fix technical glitches that was found during game shows demo.
-A clever marketing to avoid Kinect launch window.
-Or a trick to tick people off before, "Its release on the week before Christmas."

Still at least we have a launch window instead of the usual "delay, no time frame." Can't wait til I play the definitive driver sim.
KEEPNITREAL  +   1945d ago
Very well said sir.You forgot the call fo duty one.Sony is smart to delay the game.WHY? you ask ! I'll tell you why, think about it people, why would they release the biggest ps3 game this year against KINECT and then call of duty the week after and then assassins creed, need for speed hot pursuit the week after that. Thats stupid. It's alot about money.Best time to release gt5 is december. Similar things happened to Alan Wake and Mod nation racers . Very good games with crappy sales !
Graey  +   1944d ago
Id have to disagree on a couple notes.

AC, and need for speed are no competition. Your going to have to release the game sometime. But it would be wise to release the game during a time where people are out looking for "games" for the holiday season.

Christmas block is the best time to release for this. Black Friday...a PS3 bundle/GT5.

If COD delayed until this same time I think there would still be no competition. Simply because with GT5 you know what you know to know you want the game. I don't know how to explain it other than, you don't go to bestbuy for example to choose between GT5 and COD. You go because you know you already chose one or the other. So its like, if you've already sided with Gran Tourismo and you see COD standing on the shelf right beside it your going to glance at it and still pick up GT5. Simply because you already know you wanted it.
badkolo  +   1945d ago
theres to many games coming out, kinect and move havent really started, cod is coming out and tons of multiplat games all in the next month and a half.

do you really think they want to throw the best racing game ever made out there with the risk of losing sales. this is the best thing they can do, whoever's bright idea it was to release 3000000 games between oct and nov is a moron.

and each year they continue to do it instead of spreading the games properly throughouyt the year, this cause big top tier games like gt5 to have to fiddle wih release dates.
Orion  +   1945d ago
...bubs to u... and I must add, in these times, not everybody can afford buying two games in a time frame of 10 days or 2 weeks... no big foreseeable release for Xmas... big money for Xmas... if GT5 has millions of sellings in november, in xmas they will multiply...
Graey  +   1944d ago
I think
the reason why they release like this has something to do with summer not being a prime sell time. So winter is when everyone is indoors...what do people do besides that. Why they play a crap load of video games. Add onto this family and friends getting together during the holidays, which less face it starts around the end of October. There you go a sure fire strategy.

Defiantly a slow end to a good year for Sony, Move which is great but has no credible software, LittleBigPlanet2 which got delayed til January an GT5 a game we have been waiting 6 years to play, but because there so scared of Cod an Kinect which are completely different games we have to wait another month (or whatever). But this sucks ass for fans, delayed 20 days from release, I understand the frustration. :/

Why is TheSixthAxis even mentioned in this "story"? It's just a link to the NY Times site.

My guess is...
They didn't want to compete with Call Of Duty Black Ops and Kinect. I know not many here are Kinect fans, but it seemingly is doing well and Gamestop is even doing a midnight launch. So I think it's too much competition for what was supposed to be Sony's "Big" title for the holidays.
The Pre orders weren't that impressive for it to be honest. I mean Kinect Adventures was doing better. So this isn't a surprise for me.
Strikepackage Bravo  +   1945d ago
I think your right
Kinect is going to be all over the news. I dont think they want to share the hype spotlight with Kinect, or CODBO for that matter.

Odd, since you would think they would be confident GT5 can stand on its own. The only thing that make me woner is if they just are pushing it back for marketing reasons, why then do they not have a new release date already.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is pushed back to March 2011.
Mr Marbles  +   1945d ago
Not surprised
when are you guys going to learn, this is what happens when you put all your faith in far eastern companies and developers. They are different form us, to them this absolute spit in the face to millions of customers is no big deal.

Bungie or Epic would NEVER pull a stunt like this, who the F%ck doesn't know they need to delay a game until less than a month before release?!?!

Your nuts if you defend this, everyone should be outraged, and frankly im not sure Poly or Sony deserves your business, this is huge disrespect to the customer, they need to learn that.

Can you imagine M$ pulling this with Halo Reach, they would have been crucified by the media and the fans, but Sony will get away with jerking around millions like its some kind of joke.
PirateThom  +   1945d ago
Everyone is outraged, but everyone isn't throwing their dummy out of the pram and refusing to buy the game. That's stupid.
Mr Marbles  +   1945d ago
Well why should
the customer miss out on the game when it does come out, no reason for that. I would just buy the game used, or rent it from gamefly and buy it used from them.

But to put up with being jerked around is not an option here, I would at least cancel my pre order. Not just saying that cuz its Sony either, if it were MS or Bungie I would do the same thing. When you look at how loyal most PS3 fans are, this is a really crappy way to say thanks for that loyalty.

you need to get out more, there are far more serious problems than a video game getting delayed in this world.
Graey  +   1944d ago
seriously man
We as Americans have a tendency to go off the handle on minute, insignificant things. Just because we can doesn't mean we should. want quantity instead of quality. Which by your statement is what your asking, or at least that is what I'm getting from it. Should they not strive to make the game better?
Dlacy13g  +   1945d ago
well...finally someone giving some straight talk
No pr spin... I actually tend to think that rumor at the end about lack of actual units might be somewhat true. If Sony got a late jump on pressing discs or as has happened in the past, pressing got underway only to see a change needed and all the discs to that point were tossed. they may actually be having shortage issues and if they were big enough then it makes sense to hold off on release.

this is a very ambitiuos title, that encompesses every aspect of racing, from traditional racing to darfting and everything else in between, while at the same time trying to get everything as accurate as a video game possible could being a simulation.on top of that with 1080p output and the best graphics this side of uncharted 2 and crisis, you guys understand this is a VERY HUGE undertaking for any game dev to accomplish.while nothing perfect, these guys are trying to get close to it.there not willing to put out some buggy garbage that will piss off 15million fans of the series.delays can be a pain in the ass, but a broken product is far worst then any delay i can think of. and with all the content thats packed in this game your likely to be playing gt5, for years to come.if they can get this just right this well go down as one of the greatest games every made.a game thats everything to a genre has never been done before.

In my case at least this news provides one shining light, It gives me more time to invest in a new Hdd and an external harddrive to do my back up on. I have barely enough space on my 60 gb to install gt5. I know itll be here eventually in any case.
djfullshred  +   1945d ago
I think it was George Lucas who said no movie is ever completed, and they are just abandoned when you run out of time & money.

I think it is about time for Polyphony to abandon this project, and put it on the store shelves. They don't seem like they are ever going to be satisfied, so get over it, and sell what you got.

It will be worth it.
I have not been disappointed yet with GT and still remember how much the original on PS1 blew me away. I would rather they polish the product as much as possible before its released.
ULTIMATE_REVENGE  +   1945d ago
Since it's been delayed they might as well make use of the extra time by fixing the ugly trees, how can you make the cars look ultra realistic and then have PS2 level environments? the graphics should be consistent and not inconsistent as it takes away the sense of realism.

The only thing that I don't care about are the spectators but the detail in the environments need great leaps of improvements because they haven't changed much since the PS2.

By the way I'm not bashing GT5 and I plan on buying it day 1 just like the rest of you.

People at the Eurogamer expo said GT5 was a major let down when they got to play it. I'm telling you there is something seriously up with this game and Sony are crapping their pants at the reaction it's going to get from reviewers and fans.

i dont care if its made yesterday, last month, last year or last century. the fact that sony (the console maker) has delayed 4 games this quarter is VERY VERY VERY DISSAPOINTING. im tired of defending sony. im nothing against the developer. but the fact that sony cant predict the development length shows how clueless they are about their OWN CONSOLE!

well sony im pretty sick of your excuse. im tired of defending this game. im tired saving money to get this game. F* you sony!! F* you big time.

guys, even if you're sony fanboys (i am too), please stop defending sony on this. it will make them feels ok delaying stuffs! its 4 game in one quarter! its madness. never before a developer so clueless about their development process.

ps: i dont care if you bubble this down
SoapShoes  +   1944d ago
Shut up, you're an idiot. Games have been delayed since games have first come out and unpredictable problems can arise, this is unfortunate but ridiculous to get upset over because it simply happens.
