Destructoid Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Review

Not only is the game completely unoriginal, it doesn't even manage to be seamless and competent with its copying like an unoriginal game needs to be. There's no justification for Lords of Shadow. It's simply a second-rate title that might have been good a decade ago, but doesn't need to exist in this day and age.

Good review, though I disagree with it. But hey, reviews are opinions.

Redrum0592902d ago

Shit review by shit reviewer.

kancerkid2901d ago

It's amazing to me that people still review Jim's reviews not based on how they are written, but because they believe his opinion is "wrong". It's even more amazing when they are mean about it, as though Jim is somehow not worth their respect or curiosity just because he doesn't see things exactly as they do. More amazing is that is when they haven't even played the game that Jim has reviewed, but they still claim to know something about it, and use other reviews as evidence that Jim's opinion is valid or invalid. "I haven't played the game myself, but because it's empowering to be negative and dismissive, I'll say that I think Jim's opinion is shit. However, since some other man once said that he had a similar opinion to Jim's about this game, then maybe Jim's opinion isn't total shit... this time." It's interesting stuff, and fun to watch in it's own way, but I can't help but think that you guys will look back on these comments someday and cringe.

solidjun52901d ago

Deadly Premonitio by Jim Sterling. 10/10.
Yea, that made me cringe.

Comments about Jim being shit reviewer? Nope. Not cringing at all. Get over it.

BlueTroll2902d ago

STOP GIVING THIS HITS! IT'S BY JIM STERLING!

WARNING!

chazjamie2902d ago (Edited 2902d ago )

"Gabriel is often wont to jump"

"Protagonist Gabriel can rappel from"

"Be they werewolves, vampires"

and then i stopped reading. this is a terrible review. Its has so many errors. i think the writer is no position to judge the game let alone write a review about it.

hay2902d ago (Edited 2902d ago )

Actually it's really valuable review. Take one favourable one(around 9/10) take this one and get all the good points from the favourable and all bad points from this review and you'll have nice and quite realistic view on the game. Even though destructoid overreacts with some flaws. But more favourable reviews overreact with praising the game on the other hand...

It's a good game with major flaws and lack of originality.

PS360fanboy2902d ago

I ike Destructoid but this is getting ridiculous. Deadly Premonition gets a 10; Lords of Shadow gets a 5?

Attention whores, that's what they are.

TRU3_GAM3R2902d ago

"its not a castlevania game" ok why not just reviewed for what it is ?

lightningsax2902d ago

"Seriously ... mirror puzzles in the year 2010? Why don't we all start riding horse-drawn carriages again while we're at it?"

Um... http://www.youtube.com/watc... . That was a pretty enjoyable mirror puzzle. Also, not that old.

Here's how this article went for me:

1) Clicked "Read full review"
2) Saw Jim Sterling was author
3) Backed out of review

Any game that is receiving high praise from the rest of the industry will get a low score from him. He's starved for attention.

kancerkid2902d ago

So all scores, from every website should be exactly the same for every game?

You understand people do not necessarily like a game just because everyone else does.

Why do you not argue against his points instead of bringing up irrelevant things like how it scored elsewhere.

BlueTroll2902d ago

I would, but then I'd have to read the article. Fuck that.

T9X692902d ago

I don't think everyone has to like a game that everyone else does, but at the same time, this is the guy who gave Blade Kitten a higher score than this game, if that tells you anything. Plus it's not like this is the first time this guy has rated a game very different from other reviewers, he does it all the time, either really high when everyone else is really low, or really low when everyone else is really high. Not saying his opinion is any better or worse than IGN, Gamespot, etc, but I do wonder sometimes if this guy reviews games with crazy scores just to get attention.

Redempteur2902d ago

jim sterling is a special case

you have to read how weird this reviews are to understand

DelbertGrady2902d ago (Edited 2902d ago )

I don't agree with all of what he said but I still think that if it didn't have Castlevania on the box it wouldn't get the warm reception it's gotten in reviews and by its fanbase.

I played the Star Wars Unleashed 2 demo yesterday and it impressed me a whole lot more than the demo for Castlevania.

clank5432902d ago

The demo is really not an adequate representation of the whole game. It gets much better than that later on in the game. I don't understand why companies that put out demos always put out the beginning of the game and I think they should put different parts out there.

Downtown boogey2902d ago

True... Like how Arkham Asylum's demo had three small separate parts stitched together in a seamless way to showcase more variety.

Seraphim2902d ago

my problem thus far has been seeing the gloating reviews. Is LoS a solid game, absolutely. But it seems like every score has been a 9. LoS is definitely not that good of a game. I'm certainly glad I only had to pay $40 otherwise I'd be a bit let down having spent more. To see a 5 though & this piss poor review? Ridiculous. Yes it's seamless, levels are short and choppy, it has it's flaws, & pretty much no game in this day is truly "original" anymore so to blast it for being unoriginal is as idiotic as one can be... tears this hack "journalist" a new one.

LoS is nothing more than a solid average title. Nothing screams excellence, nothing screams mediocre or worse. Just a solid game that's lacking a few things to make it an excellent experience and title. But it's certainly not "a second rate title" by any means. Yes it's not your golden amulet, it's not your Elite game, but it still has enough quality and character to be a top notch game in it's own respective way.

Maybe this journalist was too dumb to get past the troubling boss fights so he felt the desire to bash it?

I do agree w/ you though. Without the Castlevania name this game wouldnt be getting such high marks and gloating reviews. The journalists would either take it down a notch and give it the credit it deserves in it's own right or down right bash the hell out of it because it's no GoW or DMC.

There are a lot of peculiar inconsistencies in your post. Average but not mediocre?

CrzyFooL2902d ago

A 5 from Jim Sterling means the game is really an 8. You have to grade Jim on a curve :-)

Acquiescence2902d ago

A massive curve. He's essentially one great big infinite curve.
