Why A Video Game Does Not A Soldier Make

My grandfather fought the Nazis and was wounded. For years afterward, father recreated that war in games in his Brooklyn neighborhood, where some of the children playing had lost their fathers overseas. War games always require two sides, and someone in Brooklyn always had to play the Germans.

Even though I disagree with him, it's a well written piece. I heard on my way home from work - it's definitely worth listening too as well.

Fishy Fingers2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

It's actually an (extremely) old play on words, most famously,

"one swallow does not a summer make" - Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, a student of Plato and teacher of Alexander the Great. Basically, one smart dude.

HolyOrangeCows2871d ago

I knew people would come in here like "LOL Im teh gramar notsee" and think that they were correcting the title.

Jayjayff2871d ago

that would be different since translations get messed up if you do it literally.

dillydadally2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

People, please stop mocking the headline. It is correct. You are wrong. You only show your lack of knowledge by mocking it and look stupid to those more knowledgeable of the English language. It's a correct construct that younger people won't have heard as much. You want a source? I used to be a journalist and an editor and have been writing professionally for years. Listen to Fishy Fingers - he is spot on.

The Wood2871d ago

you and fishy are right but you have to see the funny side. People dont speak like this any more...Shakespeare isnt on mtv and olde english is the name of a cider. Mixing modern terms like video game and old English just isn't kool or apparent to all.

I do love Shakespeare though, Quentin Tarantino, eat your heart out

UnwanteDreamz2871d ago

" People dont speak like this any more"

True but you have to admit it sounds more intelligent than "OMFG youz guyz aint soldirz 4realz"

Plus all those commenting learned something.

The Lazy One2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

Since when did it matter if a headline was how people speak or not? It's still correct. All the 1.X comments up there ^ make me feel bad for the state of education in the world.

edit: The ones down VVV there too.

ReservoirDog3162871d ago

I knew there had to be some reason why they worded it like that.

a videogame does not a legendary, multi-million album-selling rockstar make.

You hear that all you pathetic inbreds who decided to drop out of high school to practice Rockband and Guitar Hero full-time?

Bnet3432871d ago

Retarded the headline is

wat6342871d ago

Excuse me, but how you use the word "retarded" is foolish.

Retarded means someone with mental problems, your sentence should be like:

"Foolish the headline is"

See it wasn't that hard, was it?

gcolley2871d ago

retarded used to just mean someone with mental problems, it has evolved. do you live in a cave by any chance? and why is the title foolish? ok, maybe because of the target audience. all they hear is yoda talking

karl2871d ago

or maybe

"retarded the writer is.. "

he is not though

Jack-Pyro2871d ago

All of you are in the wrong.

Retarded simply means "To Hinder"

I could say that somethings growth was retarded due to outside circumstances, an idea was retarded by close minded people.

Could all of you stop having such retarded grammar skills, please.

UnwanteDreamz2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

Retard is to hinder.

Retarded is the characterisation of retardation.

Headline is perfect grammar. Old construct from an adage, but perfectly decent grammar and you make yourselves look daft by rushing in without thinking whether the English on show might actually be a lot more correct than the English most of us use on here. Silly sausages.

SKUD2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )

LMAO at the headline. Classic N4G.

gcolley2871d ago

do you mean classic n4g as in let's all focus on the title and miss the point of the article?

FwanK2871d ago (Edited 2871d ago )
