most of the xbox 360 / ps3 horsepower taking to make the game playable in HD 720p (this add detailes to the screen but do not make the game l0ok better ) .than big part of CPU/GPU power taking to display the game @60fps. both xbox and ps have OS running in the background that take 32MB of ram in 360/ 94 MB in ps3 in addition to power from CPU. add to that the relistic art style in PS3/360 game that require higher power to animate and display.number of chracter in the screen at once... to the end of the story.

the wii in the other hand display the games at 480i(saveing it donkeypower for the effects) few games support 480p .i have seen the water effect in mario galaxy and it is one of the best if not the best i have ever seen. the game colores are fu@king beatiful

It's pretty hard to take that out of context. They were talking about the visuals. The game looks better than a lot of the garbage that has come out on the Wii as of late.... but comparing it to ps3 & 360 games was just stupid. I just watched some of the trailers and lol'd.

Doesn't mean it won't be a fun game for those that like Mario... some of the levels look like fun platforming. But the game's visuals still look like sharp last gen graphics.

I don't see any wrinkles in Mario's shirt, or skin pores in his face. His body is not proportioned properly and I can't find any bump-mapping in the levels that give it a distinct realism.

I have seen of SMG do look really good. Definately leaps and bounds ahead of what other companies are doing with the Wii.

I think as the Wii gets bigger in it's install base 3rd parties will harness it's graphics more. Let's not forget that the Wii is more powerful than the Gamecube(about 2x) and the Cube could pump out great graphics. Resident Evil 4 anyone?

haha, I bet it's as fun as most of those games, it's all a matter of opinion. I like shooters as much as many people here do, and I like the Final Fantasies, playing VII through X. They are talking about the effort made to create the game...many wii titles are annoying ports, and I am slightly irritated by them. Especially since I was gonna get madden and tiger woods but EA didn't change the graphics at all. People will be making many titles for the wii soon cause of the install base, and it'll be great for Nintendo. Sony and PS3 fans will still get their games too, it's just a much higher risk (imagine a 5 million dollar game getting 6/10 reviews, they'd go bankrupt) but all the smaller devs will go to the wii, or somehow get sponsorship by the big companies.

right there, this guy made a point to compare it to PS3 and 360 titles, specificly the best looking. and he is entirely wrong. its a decent looking title, but nothing to brag about from a graphic's standpoint.

R&C alone looks much better, KZ2 and GEARS make his comparision laughable

Taken in context, IGN's statement holds. If you have trouble reading it in context then maybe you need to re-read it. They mean that the graphics of Super Mario Galaxy are fantastic for its style. Obviously, if the style was a realistic war simulator it wouldn't stand ground next to Gears of War or Killzone 2.

How is judging a snapshot that's re-displayed over computer screens with varying resolutions going to give anyone an accurate comparison of two games? Rachet and Clank Future is going to be incredible and the graphics are superb but they are comparable to Super Mario Galaxy. These two games are close to being on par in a graphical sense. Obvious differences would include computational speeds, computer AI, etc. but the graphics are very similar.

I have a 360, and it's great, but the Wii is by far the best system for playing with others. Great for drinking games.

like i said in my post, Mario Galaxy looks good. really good, to be honest, but to say it can stand next to the "*BEST-LOOKING" X Box 360 and PS3 games is a bit much.

the truth of the matter, is that last generation, the Gamecube was a formidable graphics powerhouse.

obviously, that approach didn't work for them (though i hardly count 25million units sold as a failure, personally), so they went with the "less is more" strategy.

this is working *FOR NOW, but what happens when you can get Killzone and Mass Effect graphics for the same price as a Wii? is the wand alone enough to justify ignoring the calls of prettier games that also (according to the reviews of games like Bioshock), and excellently playing games?

as a gamer for a long, long time, i *ENJOY my visual upgrades.

the Wii, as a gaming console, is weak to me, according to my *OWN personal tastes.

you can't get pissy with me because your console, factually, *CANNOT compare to the 360 and PS3, and we take it among ourselves to jab you a about it.

Everyone here is taking this way, way too seriously.

First of all, IGN is probably aware that Super Mario Galaxy isn't close to UT3 or COD4 in graphical complexity. Everyone is. There is obviously a difference in hardware, so the Wii can't handle PS3 and 360 standards like FSAA, AF, etc.

But I think we can all admit that Super Mario Galaxy is a very good game to look at. It may very well be as attractive as some games on the competing consoles. Not because it has more polygons or it has more advanced lighting or whatever- because it is a colorful, beautiful game with art direction that is perhaps unparalleled by any game I have ever seen.

No, we won't see Super Mario Galaxy win awards for its graphics instead of the competing graphical powerhouses. But it goes without saying that come November you'll have a lot more Wii owners that can look at their TV screens and say "Wow, that looks pretty darn good."

In fact, I think Mario Galaxy and Rachet & Clank are two of teh best looking games comming out in the near future. A game doesn't have to be photorealistic to look great. Some games are meant to look like Mario.

This has been proven many times, but as long as the art direction is good, games can really really stand out. In Mario's case, like R&C, they go for the cartoon look. How many polygons do you really need to get that really nice? Definitely not as many as say Gears of War, which is why Mario can still stand on its own when showing the game off to others, it has a very refined cartoon look. Granted if it was on a next gen system (sorry wii fans :P), the grass would look a ton better, and the textures for the planets would be more detailed. But would you really improve Mario or the enemies a whole lot? You really don't need to.
