IGN: Quantum Theory Review

Quantum Theory is a functional game, but that's about the only thing that can be said about it. If this is what the developers at Tecmo-Koei think western gamers want out of a shooter than they need an intervention. Its uninspired level design, terrible shooting, and frustrating instant-kill portions make this a game that IGN simply couldn’t recommend to anyone at anytime. You only get one life to live, and Quantum Theory isn’t worth a moment of it.

Dont worry I totally agree, played the demo last night and it was godly awful, It was that bad I didnt even finish the dam demo, just quit and delete, and yes it was to overhyped when it was a ps3 exclusive, all I can say is thank god it aint ps3 exclusive anymore cause now xbox can share the crapness of this game. And ps3 owners dont have to say this was ps3 exclusives.

I did the same thing.

I downloaded the demo the same day it was released on PSN and I just thought the gameplay was absolutely terrible.

Weapons were terrible and seemed to have little more effect than a water pistol, gameplay was so slow and clunky....it was just a terrible experience and I sooooo wanted the game to be good as I thought it looked very interesting and that it had some potential.

I didn't want to listen to the gaming sites saying it sucked but founf myself agreeing.

@frostyhat123 I didn't like the first Vanquish demo too much, but I loved the challenge mode demo that was on the Jap PSN store, hard as hell and fun.

As for Quantum Theory, the bullshots of it at first when it was still in development looked nice, but the demo was horrible. I only finished it hoping that something better was going to happen.

Ouch...

In my opinion, Gears of War truly set the bench mark of a great cover system. Even fantastic games like Uncharted 1 & 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, etc capitalized on the influence (these aren't considered clones, but good influences are captured nicely). The demo for Vanquish seemed like Gears of War on crack, but that was fun and well executed as well.

This Gears clone seems to be an utter failure. Heck, Dark Sector probably did a better job than this.

Dark Witness-I don't EVER recall anyone saying it was a Gears killer, do you? Honestly? I'd hoped for it to be much better as I quite liked the art direction of the backgrounds in the early screenshots(sort of a fresh Art Nouveaux thing going on) but, sadly, that seems to have been lost along with any semblance of a decent game.

Thing is even someone like myself, who had hoped it would be a decent game and maybe go a little way to filling a Gears shaped hole in the PS3 library never had MUCH conviction that it would do so-let alone actually "kill" Epic's great series. I just don't ever recall anyone ever saying anything remotely that bullish and unsupportable in this case(not that I'd be surprised if they had but I just don't recall people ever being that up for the game at any stage-even when it was exclusive). I'm still surprised, however, that they managed to go THIS badly awry-a TPS based on cover shouldn't be THAT hard to make OK.

at least that review justifies why they like it. In fact I think they give more justification to their score than this IGN review.

For exanple, why is it the game has to score low in graphics just because the reviewer doesn't like the design. Technically he doesn't mention any problems with the game, no graphical glitches or anything. Visually I can see they game isn't top class but it looks better than a 3.5 to me.

to attack and evade. Even funnier is they criticized the developers for "artificially extending the game by throwing wave after wave" of enemies when other well known games that do exactly that received IGN's top score.

Also precious is the 3.5 for graphics when it looks exactly like other games that received top scores. Oh yeah, and there's absolutely nothing in the review that proves that they actually played the game.

Now Tecmo knows what happens when you don't pony up the cash.

This is a pure hit job. This is how the top reviewing sites let developers know that, one way or the other, they'll have to pay the piper.

another thing is letting a game be published over all. maybe deals were already made before hand, or wtv, but you can't just BAR a game from being published like that, if that were the case, games like Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust and Damnation wouldn't have been released for PS3 either.

one thing is not associating the PS3 brand directly with a game by making it exclusive, another thing is just letting a crap game be released across multiple platforms because you get some cash for every game sold / licensing of game on the platform

I think freeing up exclusivity is more likely (like visualb said) than them blocking a game from release on a console at all, if either one had to be true.

There would be a very big bridge burned from banning a game from a console, however much sense it makes on paper, Sony wouldn't do any such thing to distance themselves to that degree. It would be a slap in Tecmo's face and would have larger collateral damage than it's worth. The more likely scenario if there had to be influence from Sony, is that Sony just allowed multiplatform status for the game, maybe from some portion of a contract, etc...

I have no clue why Sony would do something like what you're suggesting, it would be business suicide.

At least Haze had good controls and some good ideas in its game design. QT has nothing.

Haze was crippled by politics and late changes to the middleware meaning FRD had to quickly rush their own bits a bobs together and apparently the game looked and ran much better a year before release-according to a few people who claimed to have played earlier builds. The writing and acting, mind, were always weak but the core shooting was still good and with a bit of thought I felt the MP could still have been really good.

Lair, on the other hand, was killled by the insistence on being a "showcase" for Sixaxis controls that just weren't quite up to it(and not for everyone even if they weren't ever as bad as they were made out). I'd go as far as saying the patch for "normal" controls actually would have made the game a couple of points higher rated had it been available at launch and I really enjoyed the game despite a couple of glaring design faults like the lack of a minimap/radar feature to keep you orientated in battle and during longer levels. I also think that redoing it with a few more enemies onscreen, the feature I've mentioned and possible Move/3D support and trophies could make it the game it should have been. There's actually a lot more right about Lair than there is wrong but thoise early reviews and errors live long in the collective mind.

Basically, though, neither game are in the league of crap that QT inhabits as they have things they actually do well and Lair inparticular remains a great idea which just needed a few better finishing touches-cannot believe they went for just the Sixaxis controls looking back-should have been a great game and even now I'd suggest that Lair and HS of the early PS3 exclusives should be patched with trophies just to see if they can sell a few more as, to me, both deserve another chance. Folklore too.

Am I alone in feeling there';s actually a classic somewhere in the Lair premise that we can see the odd glimpse of in the finished game? It won't get one but I'd be willing to bet they could make an amazing sequel-flying about fighting on dragons is cool I don't care what anyone says and couldn't they do amazing controls with Move and a nav? Seriously, to me it's one of the most under rated games this generation and is definitely worth the five quid it will cost you used if you're the slightest bit interested in dragon dog fights and ground strafing!

Hunh? What do you take developers for? No first party would ever say that to a developer, especially if they aren't publishing the game themselves. You will only risk your future relation with the developer by trying to bully them around like that.

Secondly, before it went multiplatform, there was actually hype for QT, you simply have to do a search here on N4G for the old articles to get a glimpse at how people felt.

Third, a developer doesn't go out and make a bad game. It's hard to say whether they knew it was a "bad" game or not. Perhaps by their standards, the game was great. After working on a project for so long you get kind of attached to it and it gets harder to notice the flaws.

Also, neither Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo have THAT much power to simply look in on what a developer is doing with their platform until the developer lets them.

...I'm betting it's far more likely Tecmo/Koei was pursuing development assistance and/or marketing support from Sony. Upon seeing the game, Sony wasn't interested in using their own internal budget to support a game they weren't 100% behind.

Realizing this, Tecmo/Koei had one of two options...eat the budget themselves in a risky release (they aren't a big company these days), or go multiplat to even out the sales demographic and possibly turn a profit.

Simply put, it doesn't matter how many consoles get the release, it was destined to fail from day one with negative impressions at each and every show.

Just have the confidence to back your own talent and your own ideas and the rest will fall into place. Do you imagine anyone is saying to Kojima or Ueda "nah, mate, make it more Western"? Obviously not and there are tons of good games coming out of Japan even with this western obsession but they all tend to be those not worrying about whether they're too Japanese and just getting on with being great sodding games. Can't believe Capcom farmed out yet another franchise to western devs with DMC-didn't the Grin debacles teach them anything? Didn't shoehorning in co-op to RE teach them anything? 47 - Wake gets a bad wrap just b/c of sales. AAA...? I don't know but it is a DAMN good game, damn good. Amongst the best I've played all year (others would include GOW3, ME2, Heavy Rain to name a few - so yes, not a fanboy, have all consoles).

Homicide - Lair too I believe gets a bad wrap. I personally find it to be amongst my favorite PS3-only games...maybe top tenish or so (edit: no, not ten but perhaps 15 - just looked over my games)? Not sure exactly where it fits but that game is also damn, damn good when you DL the control pack that allows for normal analog controls. Admittedly, I couldn't play it w/ the Six Axis but I do know others that absolutely loved its controls.

Lair, I will say, is definitely not AAA - at least I think (?? - I'm torn) - but Wake, it maybe, just maybe, could be tossed into that boat. Honestly, I may even be undervaluing Lair on this and as I sit and think if that is the case, the sole reason I can come up with if it is so, and why I'm torn, is that I believe more elite AAA exclusives reside on the PS3 nowadays and those that dance that thin line just pale to the elite-ness of some of the heavy hitters.

Worst demo ever. I played less than 5mins on PS3 then deleted it. Downloaded it again on my 360 to just give it one more chance. It was deleted after 3 minute. This is an embarrassment to gaming. This is how a 'dev' (I use the term very loosely) throws money away. A game made in a 24hr competition is mile better than this.
