"Bollocks" does 3D hog CPU - Evolution

Eurogamer writes: "3D games don't crumble under immense CPU hunger: that's "bollocks", MotorStorm maker Matt Southern has said.

"You do need a little bit more processing power, but I don't think it's quite the hit that some people are claiming," Southern said at his Eurogamer Expo 2010 presentation. "That might just be the fact that we've been doing it for years now and have kind of got really optimal code.

"I've seen people say that it takes a huge chunk of the processing power. Bollocks. It takes a little." (Evolution Studios, Motorstorm 3, MotorStorm: Apocalypse, PS3)

Just like anything it has to be optimized, probably coded...or it will hog the cpu, but if done efficiently, probably little over-head. Kind of like how that dude from Microsoft said there is no need for chip on Kinect to do tracking, can be handled by the Xenos.
shazui123  +   1388d ago
im sure
It CAN be handled by the Xenos, however, it clearly needs more processing power than is available to it. More tracking "points" maybe? so that it's accuracy is higher and you don't get the glitchy twitching and limb morphing that you have in almost every kinect demo so far.

3D split-screen???
I guess there will be no side by side split-screen for a while...At least not in 3D.

The 360 has all the horsepower it needs to run a 3D game...the problem arises when you look at the HDMI 1.2 situation. Same with Sony's HDMI 1.3 connection.

In order for Sony to run full 1080p other areas of the video/audio spectrum will have to be compromised...Sony has said they do not want to do that. It's not much better for the 360 as it only has HDMI 1.2 and will require even further reductions for a higher resolution.

It doesn't matter...3D is being rushed in by Sony ( as well as others ) as a last desperate attempt to make a profit on the struggling ( by Sony's standards ) PS3. It's a double edge sword for Sony...on one hand the PS3 is somewhat capable of running 3D and on the other, there is alot of cheaper alternatives out on the market. Add to that, Sony's own number crunchers have said they expect that 50% of TV's sold in " 2014 " will be 3D COMPATIBLE. 2014 is a long ways away. 1% of households now have a 3D compatible TV.

Also...Sony lost out to Panasonic recently the rights to the biggest selling 3D movie to date...Avatar. Avatar will only be able to be viewed on a Panasonic 3DTV.

There is no doubt about how great 3D looks. The problem is the medical " issues " associated with 3D...lazy eye after prolonged exposure, especially in children under 8 years of age is a REAL potential problem. The cost is another stumbling block...and of course the infamous geeky $150 glasses. Toshiba has said they have developed a glasses-less 3Dtv to be marketed in 2011. Wait and see is the order of the day.

inthe know

you do know hdmi 1.3 and hdmi 1.4 are the same just that

hdmi 1.4 can handle resolutions as high as 4k by 3k and
hdmi 1.3 is doing resolutions as high as 2560x1600
hdmi 1.2 just lacks the ability to out put high bandwidth audio and video

the avatar blu ray is a timed exclusive

"At launch, running through an undisclosed period of time, the disc will only be available to consumers who purchase a Panasonic 3D Viera plasma TV. The promotional offer will likely take the form of a variety of bundles onto the purchase of Viera 3D TVs and related equipment, although exact details are still to be announced, the company said."

and i wouldnt bring up that medical stuff either because its been with us since tvs came out

remember dont sit close to the tv now look at us sitting close to computer screens

HDMI 1.3 has the same bandwidth as HDMI 1.4 so I don't think the HDMI version is a limiting factor for the PS3

**Agrees with Cyrus
The Xenos CPU does not work like the Cell processor, so I think most of the 360's tasks are done by the GPU alone. Just like my C2D don't do much for gaming since my GPU is considered "outdated" according to experts.

thats tottaly different people were expecting kinect to have its own cpu so it can be used somehow with games that were already out

like ps3 and the move

3D doesn't significanly load the CPU
however, 3D does "hog" GPU. In fact, that's precisely what the developer said.

As for Kinect, that's a whole different problem. That really is a CPU hog since all the processing burden is on the CPU, not the GPU. According the IBM tests, the Xenos CPU is pretty slow. As a result, Microsoft had to scale back accuracy (they use a low precision point cloud) yet it still has massive amounts of lag.

Good. Hopefully this means alot of 3D games. Hopefully Sony shares what they know with 3rd party devs so we can see more games in 3D.

3D is awesome.

Try it.
nickjkl  +   1388d ago
did the 3rd party want to learn the cell processor
did 3rd party want to use more space on blu ray
did 3rd party use mlaa even though sony offers it to all studios

and devs say it could be incorporated in an afternoons worth of work

lol... only third party dev used it and that was for the saboteur...

except it has been proven the saboteur does not use mlaa

Did you guys see that he said it was running full HD in 3D?!
SMW  +   1388d ago
Yes.

I saw it.

It made me...... Happy =D

1080P HD for now....
Hopefully the final product would be such. This would mean a literal 1080P 60FPS, in order to achieve the target rendering of 720P and 30FPS in "stereoscopic" 3D (you know, since games are already, in 3D).

I played the new Motorstorm at the Eurogamer Expo, and it was epic (I Got the top lap speed) :)
The 3D side is okay but even though it is in pre-release state and needs much more work, the game lagged during major explosions and many and I mean many times did I walk pass the booths and people was getting the PS3's resetted as they had crashed.

so 1080p 3d confirmed?
xAlmostPro  +   1388d ago
nope.. he clearly said they're "aiming" for 1080p :P

Depends on the technique, and the CPU used, really. If they're rendering the scene 2x, its mostly a GPU expense, and not CPU at all. If they're post-processing the image with a 3D depth shifting algorithm, that probably takes an entire core a good few milliseconds to do.

The PS3 could do either, although you would think devoting a SPU to post-processing the image would be faster than rendering the scene a second time on the GPU, when the GPU could be working on the next frame instead. The 360, on the other hand, would probably be better off with just rendering the scene twice, although I suppose some games might be able to spare a CPU core for the job. The 360 eDRAM would get in the way, though... its too small to do even 720p 3D without a lot of slow, tiled rendering swaps... but that's another discussion.
