Bedivere, from Front Towards Gamer, gives his impressions on the Arcania: Gothic 4 demo. The game comes out on October 12th for PC and Xbox 360. A PlayStation 3 version is due out in March 2011.
I was about to stop playing early in the Demo as I didn't like the interface and the feal of the game. But after I met the witch and got move power and weapons, I no longer had those issues. I would have prefered Two Worlds2, But if I can get this for $50 on the 360, I might buy it.
I played the demo (on the PC) and was going to quit early on as well. But once you get the magic and better weapons I didn't want the demo to end!!
A PS3 version now thats something! :) (hoping that isnt a bad port)
A different studio is working on the port. We don't know who it is yet, but I hope that it's good!
I am really looking forward to this game. I've played all the Gothic games to date and even though they are not always quite as polished as some games, they are a must play. The latest iteration looks to be much more polished. PC for me.
Played the demo on xbox 360, and it has some of the worst voice acting I've ever heard, the AI doesn't do much, graphics look ok from afar but when up close to things they look naff and foliage just disappears.
The foliage disappears when you walk within a certain distance so that your view is never obstructed and you can find bodies/weapons in the grass and bushes. You can turn this off in the PC version if you don't like it. Not sure if this is possible on the console versions or not.
PC fixes this. I did notice the tearing and the performance on 360 was a bit sub par. It does seem to be worth persisting with, although the lip synching and the acting is a bit amateurish.
The engine is definitely aimed at the PC. The Trinigy Vision 7 engine takes advantage of some DX11 features, although Arcania doesn't directly support DX11. Xbox is still using DX9 code, so it's not optimal. The 360 version doesn't look awful, but it's starting to show it's age.
luved gothic 2. diddnt play 3 because of the plethora of glitches i heard it had, hoping this one is safe to buy :)
I jumped into Gothic 3 this summer and played about 30 hours of it. I gave up on it once I played this demo. 4 is sooo much better than 3. The combat in 3 is just plain broken and glitchy. 4 has a better UI, a mini-map (which 3 doesn't have, and it makes questing a pain), and much better combat. 3 also had horrible frame rate issues. It dips down to under 10 FPS sometimes, while 4 runs at a constant 60fps for me.
Fans don't seem to be happy with this third installment. I'll pick this game from the bargain bin one day. For now I'll just wait for TWII, drops in three weeks here in EU.
