The (Impending) Death of PC Gaming

PC gaming has always seemed to have an admission fee attached to the platform. Of course, this is because the games you can play are purely based on hardware. Those who are of the console persuasion may think that this is an odd occurrence due to the fact that console gamers are also limited to what they can play by hardware, but in a very different way. Lately, though, more and more hurdles have popped up in the way of those whom would like to hang on to PC gaming.

The story is too old to be commented.
Anime-Vixen2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

Im surprised developers still make games for it. I understand in order to make a game you have to use a PC but you don't have to make the game available on that platform. With all of the piracy. I just don't know why developers try. If you not making a MMO. Don't even bother making a game for the PC.

wat6342823d ago

The pc will always be better than both the 360 and ps3 combined.

HydraxFFx2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

In some categories yes, in others no. Splitscreen, console exclusives, Microsoft/Sony support, PRICE.

jony_dols2823d ago

You could buy a ps3, xbox and wii and it still would be cheaper than buying an alienware rig.

Hmm would i sacrafice Uncharted 1&2, Halo Reach, Killzone 2 &3d, Heavy rain, Alan wake, God of war 1,2&3, GT5, LBP 1&2, Red Dead Redemption, MGS4, Gears of War 2&3, Resistance 2&3, Rachet & clanks, Mario Galaxy 1&2.......... for what?

A better looking version of Crysis 2.....emm community mods.........Ehhh Im drawing blanks.

ipwnall2823d ago

@jony_dols-

Well there's your problem, you're buying an expensive piece of crap. I got my PC for just $950 but I can play most games minus a couple on the highest settings. And let me tell you, there is nothing like PC gaming. Dedicated servers, mods, and tons of exclusives.

While the library can't compete with the PS2 + PS3 library, it's better than anything else. PS3 + PC, best of both worlds.

Xristo2823d ago

@jony_dols-

....you speak of a world of ignorance...just when you mentioned Alienware you discredited your whole post...

STONEY42823d ago

"buying an alienware rig"

Person that knows nothing about PC gaming confirmed.

jony_dols2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

So you discredit my post because i mentioned alienware.
Im just mentioning the expensive option.

Ok you go ahead and build a custom rig that can emulate and play all the console games that i mentioned above. Hope you like waiting another 5 years so you can download PCSX3 and run Killzone 3 at 10fps.

Enjoy missing out on the best games this generation, maybe your awesome custom built rig can transport you back to 1995, when PC gaming was on top.

Oh and BTW the PS3 is capable of both community mods e.g. UT3 and Valve is in the process of bringing Steam to the platform aswell.

STONEY42823d ago

I have a PS3 so I don't need to worry about that. Seriously, no hardcore PC gamer would ever waste money on an Alienware, when you could build an $800 PC that would run 2x better than a $3000 Alienware.

jukins2823d ago

and a pc with graphics comparable to 360 and ps3 cost more than the two combined see what i did there

Letros2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

$400 PC, MWF2, 720p, highest details, 4xAA, 77 frames per second, stop skipping math class.

solar2823d ago

"Oh and BTW the PS3 is capable of both community mods e.g. UT3 and Valve is in the process of bringing Steam to the platform as well."

LOL #1. How is Valve bringing "SteamWorks", not "Steam" to the PS3 = mods?

lost there.

LOL #2. "Hmm would i sacrafice Uncharted 1&2, Halo Reach, Killzone 2 &3d, Heavy rain, Alan wake, God of war 1,2&3, GT5, LBP 1&2, Red Dead Redemption, MGS4, Gears of War 2&3, Resistance 2&3, Rachet & clanks, Mario Galaxy 1&2.......... for what?"

ZOMG A LIST OF CONSOLE GAMES!! we know consoles have good games mate. you dont have to list them to prove your almighty point. which lacks any thought.

LOL #3. "You could buy a ps3, xbox and wii and it still would be cheaper than buying an alienware rig"

no shit.

LOL #4. "Ok you go ahead and build a custom rig that can emulate and play all the console games that i mentioned above. Hope you like waiting another 5 years so you can download PCSX3 and run Killzone 3 at 10fps."

the tech in the PS3 is 5 years old compared to PC standards when it came out. the games still dont run at 1080p, like i was told when i bought my PS3, or do 4D.

LOL #5. "Enjoy missing out on the best games this generation, maybe your awesome custom built rig can transport you back to 1995, when PC gaming was on top. "

and enjoy missing the PC exclusives. oh, and 90% of console games come out on PC. we get to play them too.

IaMs122823d ago

the thing is you dont need an alienware rig to play games maxed out at all. My rig now $750 max i payed for can play any game maxed 1080p, except for a select few which still run on high settings.

2.9ghz Athlon X4
HD 5770
4gb DDR3 RAM
850 W PSU
Thats the main stuff and i could have gone cheaper with the case and dvd/cd writer

jony_dols2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

This article is about the impending death of pc gaming,
im making the point about why would you bother spending $600-3000 on a rig when the truth is that undenieably the best games this generation are on consoles.

Every major developer sees the future of gaming is in affordable home consoles. I was making the point that even famous PC devs such as Valve have jumped ship to home consoles. If you siad that back in 1999, you would have been laughed at.

I never siad that Valve were implementing mods on their future PS3 games, but rather Epic had been allowed by Sony to allow mods on UT3 ps3 version and that it is 100% possible for community mods to run on the PS3

Top quality, high budget PC exclusives are few and far between,
does that justify spending upwards of a thousand dollars for a few games.

In my opinion, No. Unless your life revolves around video games.

KingKiff2823d ago

"the truth is that undenieably the best games this generation are on consoles."

HAHAHAHAHAHA That is an opinion and a very miss guided one at that.

To each their own I say but I stopped ready your post after that comment.

what a croc

PC GAMMING IS NOT DYNING, HAS NEVER BEEN OR WILL BE DEAD.

FUD ARTICLE...

Gawdl3y2823d ago

You seem to have left out something that someone above me mentioned. PS3 + PC = Best of both worlds. You get just about everything, save for the very few exclusives that the 360 still has.

solar2823d ago

"This article is about the impending death of pc gaming"

oh, the same article that has been written hundreds of times in the last 15 years? still playing PC games here mate.

as a console gamer, as you seem to be, you should be happy PC gaming is still around. we have a lot of great titles you cannot play on consoles. i can still play games from '92 on my PC. also, the fact that Nvidia and AMD are pushing graphics forward. which seems to be what console gamers like more then anything nowadays.

jony_dols2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

But over the past 10 years PC gaming has been dwindling.
I gave up on PC games after I spent a fortune to play Doom 3 on its release, since then i haven't looked back.

The only PC games i desired this gen are Starcraft and Crysis.

Hell i have a Galaxy S with Scummvm and i can play all the best Monkey Island and broken sword games, who needs to spend hundreds on a computer to play a game from 92, when i can just play it on my phone.

A good Graphics card alone can be more expensive than a buying a console.
Why bother?

Console gamers only seem to care about graphics?
Thats a pretty stupid arguement. Games like Heavy Rain, Alan Wake, Red Dead Redemption, Uncharted 2 were praised for their innovative stories, narrative and gameplay. Look at mario galaxy 2, Crysis is obviously better looking, but from my experience with Crysis Warhead on high settings and Mario.

Mario is the far more entertaining game.

Gawdl3y2823d ago

"A good graphics card can alone cost more than a console."

Lolwut? Nowadays, you can get a decent graphics card for $70 that can run Crysis on Medium-High settings.

jony_dols2823d ago

My mate bought a 2nd hand Xbox 360 with 2 controllers with Halo 3 and gears 2 for $120. Thats a graphics card, cpu, ram, gpu, casing, 2 gamepads and 2 quality games for 120 dollars.

A decent graphics card for 70-100, a good card for 100 to 200, a top end 200 plus. Rem thats just for a graphics card, you have to factor in everything else.

KingKiff2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

"But over the past 10 years PC gaming has been dwindling."

Show me some figures to support this opinion or GTFO!!! gaming has been picking up leaps and bounds over the last 5-10 years according to most good sources ie. Steam surveys, hardware sales figures etc.

The only thing in decline is in store games sales for PC and that is due to digital distribution.

You are just a console fanboy trolling PC gamers.

imvix2823d ago

Lol after consider the price difference on Games, PC being cheaper then console on every game bought.

PC is a lot cheaper in the long run to game on compared to any console.

Lets not forget PC really does everything, consoles just advertise to do so lol.

PC is an essential home product like a TV. Everyone has one these days. If its anything like 3-4 years old and is dual core all it needs is a GPU. A 100usd GPU is enough to beat the console experience.

By that count PC is a much cheaper option to go for, for most people.

ji32002823d ago

STOP PIRATE THE PC GAMESS!!!!!!! LET THE PC GAMING LAST FOREVER UNTIL PS4 AND XBOX 720 COMES OUT!!!!!!

smokysmoke2823d ago

i agree with you wat634 peopel are so stupid... im sorry but its true im sick of peopel compairing pc to ANY console or any other compition... PC will always be better and i am i ps3 fan and i know this. not even a fight.

evrfighter2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

"bu-bu-bu-bu-bu but over the last ten years pc gaming has been dwindling"

re-read what you're typing dude. You're coming off as a bumbling idiot. pc gaming has been getting this article for over 10 years. this is just another paper to add to the mountain. All of which were written by uninformed console gamers. Or people that don't gaming at all. Michael Pachters or HHG's if you will.

I've known people that didn't know you could play games on a pc. I had them try out some games on my steam account and were instantly hooked. You can tell they've never seen 1080p gaming at 120fps. I just recently converted a 360 diehard mw2 player to CSS. He doesn't even touch his 360 anymore.

1080p 60fps isn't even considered next-gen in the pc scene anymore. that's moved on to eyefinity super resolutions, or 1200p/1600p gaming. The "next-gen" console will just be BARELY getting what we've been playing for years.

But by then we will have been long gone. In another unattainable realm that console gamers could only dream about being in.

Console will essentially become VERY VERY VERY closed pc's. while pc's will still be pc's.

We will be able to continue doing what we do now on our pc's. While in the future consoles will have hard locked operating systems that only does what The CEO wants it to do after he has you guys grab your ankles every month.

ProjectVulcan2823d ago

Did anyone actually read the article? Its full of total BS, like bioshock only working with Nvidia cards. I imagine he had a POS ancient shader model 2.0 card, and he says that the nvidia card is a 'suggestion'. Maybe he means shader model 3.0 is a REQUIREMENT and has been for ages on UE3 games, should read the specs properly.

He also claims that a disc install of Left 4 Dead requires a large download from steam to complete the installation. This is nonsense.

Finally the comment about how Pc boxes are disappearing off store shelves is true, he seems to blissfully unaware (more like ignorant) that Pc game sales are nearly all online now. The majority of Pc game sales are online.

Its annoying when ignorant people write up about PC and get simple facts wrong in an attempt to bash the platform. If you are going to write about PC, at least have some idea of how the platform works

you don't need an alienware to do that lol. BTW to ipwn, alienwares aren't pieces of crap, i know cus I buy them and they actually last a lot more and are more reliable than my dell's, compaq's and toshibas. Hell my 5 year old alienware laptop still runs without probs.I agree they are a lil overpriced.

dirtydbz2823d ago

if it last longer you paid for quality ( some people don't seem to understand that) I don't own an alien ware but come on people wouldn't buy the things if they were crap

Motion2823d ago

They're not crap, they're just generic like every other mainstream computer distributor (dell, hp, etc). None of these companies make their own parts, just the case, then fill it with generic parts from other distributors. Alienware isn't necessarily going to be better than anything else, but it IS going to come at a higher price point.

Ilikegames762823d ago

problem, when a new game comes out for the PC, I always dread that my PC won't be able to run a new game. While on a console, a new game will definitely run smoothly on a console, specially if the console is into it's 3rd or 4th year life cycle. Developers have a lot of time to optimize a console game to make it run smoothly. While on a PC, we don't know what specs the games were optimized in.

DeathMetal2823d ago

that do not run smoothly, have missing blood grass, framrates in the teens at 720P is not smooth, screen tearing ect.

Narutone662823d ago

Those games are like that because of lazy developers or developers who are unfamiliar with the console architecture.

JsonHenry2823d ago

PC gaming is not going anywhere. As a matter of fact your console is slowing turning into a PC. Installs, patches, updates, DLC, internet connections... sounds like a PC to me.

Your CONSOLE is going to go the way of the dinosaur because it is trying to become a PC. Not the other way around.

Alvadr2823d ago

Devs make PC versions because its easy to do, and its easy money.

Games start out development on a PC, 360 dev kits are similar to developing on a PC so its easy for them to put out a PC version in most cases.

Also its easy money for them as they dont have to pay any royalties to a platform holder. Hence why PC games can be as much as £10 cheaper when first released.

kevnb2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

it seems some just want it to die for some reason. I like gaming on my pc better than any console so far, many of the games I like best are pc exclusive as well. Like CIV 5, starcraft 2 and amnesia just recently.

Anyway, this is just some random blog, I could right one about the death of playstation and sound just as stupid. I could start by going off about how all the exclusive playstation games are no longer exclusive, how many games are made for xbox and ported to playstation, how some games dont make it to playstation or come late, how great games like xenogears seem to be replaced with games I dont like such as uncharted (I dont much care for console style shooters) etc...

PC Gaming will always be above console gaming, IMO. Better graphics, Steam, mod support, and keyboard+mouse aiming is MUCH better than gamepad aiming. PC gaming is NOT dying, even with all the piracy going on.

Anime-Vixen2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

And PS3 can do Steam, mod support, and keyboard+mouse aiming. It not sony fault developers don't implement those features into their game. Also It not a huge difference graphics wise on the PC. So you seriously need to come up with some better reasons.

electricshadow2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

The PS3 can do STEAM WORKS. It is related, but not like the PC version of Steam. Also, the PS3 CAN do keyboard+mouse gaming, it's all up to the developers, you're correct. If Sony wanted to, they could make mouse and keyboard support mandatory like they did with trophies. As for the graphics argument, I'm not saying the PS3 doesn't have fantastic graphics, but the amount of detail of some random game, let's say GTA IV, the PC version CAN look much better than the PS3 version. Very rarely does a console port of a game look better than a PC version. I play games, not graphics. Just a leg up that the PC has on consoles.

EDIT: Like HydraxFFx said, dedicated servers. Sorry, my bad. I've been using my PS3 for gaming the last year as I don't have a PC. I will ALWAYS take dedicated servers over P2P.

Pandamobile2823d ago

Lol, Anime-Vixen doesn't have a clue what he/she is talking about.

Letros2823d ago

PS3 can't do x86, which makes everything you listed next to useless for PS3.

STONEY42823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

"And PS3 can do mod support"

Psh, only at the most basic level. Come back to me when you're playing with Fallout 3 HD texture, weather, and lighting mods on that PS3. Oh wait, hardware limitations. And not giving free access to folders on a PS3, like you can do on PC, doesn't help either for total conversion mods.

IaMs122823d ago

Hello! All the PS3 is turning into is another PC dumbA**

d3nworth12823d ago

The ps3 can handle mods on that level. (not without the help of a pc of course) Both the pc and ps3 versions of unreal tournement 3 can be modded. For the ps3 you just download the mod on a usb stick and import it. Characters, levels whatever. There is nothing wrong with the hardware I mean both the ps3 and 360 can out perform most home pc at the same price range. The ps3 can do alot more than most people realize its just that these features are hardly ever for some reason implemented. What it comes done to is accessiblity. For all the advantages a pc has it comes at a price. It more of a hassle compared to a console. Personally I don't think ps gaming going. Lots of great developers got their start making pc games plus consoles chage ever generation so there is a learning curve for developing for them pc is more improving than relearning.

BYE2823d ago

@Anime-Vixen

Graphics are a huge difference. It's bigger than most people might think.

Crysis for example, with texture mods in 1080p or higher on a TV set looks like a new generation already compared to console games.

And that's a 3-year old game!!!

DeathMetal2823d ago (Edited 2823d ago )

"Also It not a huge difference graphics wise on the PC." that could be the funniest thing i have ever read on here, call me when you get a resoultion above 1280 x 720, my Pc ran at those specs in the early 90's, go play mafia 2 or BFC2 on PC, they are worlds apart. consoles
can look good but are heavily linear scripted games for the most part.

ALAN WAKE WAS 540P!!!

SPLINTER CELL 576P!!!

MODERN WARFARE 2 1024X600

STONEY42822d ago

"Both the pc and ps3 versions of unreal tournement 3 can be modded."

Yes, I own UT3 on both PC and PS3. It supports maps, skins, custom gametypes, a few custom weapons, and mutators. Thing is, the PS3 version doesn't support the PhysX maps, total conversion mods (UT3 RPG, UT RTS, complete cutstom campaigns, ect.), things that go beyond the level of basic modding.

HydraxFFx2823d ago

Like I said in some categories yes, in others no. Splitscreen, console exclusives, Microsoft/Sony support, PRICE. And how could you miss the #1 reason why PC might be better then console, dedicated servers.

DeathMetal2823d ago

they have warraties for what 1 year, i know many people on their third xbox 360. My evga 8800gtx fried cause of a bad driver form nvida, a 4 year old card and they sent me a brand new 260 gtx for free. Both my motherboard and video card have LIFETIME warranties.

vickers5002823d ago

Controller preference is an opinion, so using the kb/m argument as a point in saying why pcs are better than consoles is just moronic.

KB/m takes all the realism out of aiming anyway and just makes you feel like you're cheating. Nobody in real life can do a full body 360 within a millisecond and get a headshot on somebody 100 yards away from them. Not to mention, kb/m is very uncomfortable for gaming (sitting hunched over a desk is just flat out uncomfortable), and to me, doesn't feel like I'm playing an actual game, it just feels like I'm running an application.

Not to mention the incompatibility, and spending an 30+ minutes just to find and download a patch just because the game cant run on your system for some crappy reason.

About graphics, well I'm sure that PC's CAN do graphics unbelievably better than consoles, but they aren't. The only thing that outclasses the graphics of Uncharted 2 on the pc is Crysis. Where are all these other amazing looking games you pc users speak of? All I hear are specs.

I bought a gaming pc about a year ago just to see what all the fuss was about, and honestly, I don't see it. Mod support is cool I guess, but only really serves as a novelty and isn't supported for every game. And I don't know a single pc gamer that plays anything but WoW, so the community/social aspect isn't even there for me.

Dedicated servers are nice though, but the better games (obviously an opinion) are on the consoles. I don't like RTS, or the hundreds of generic medieval RPGs, and since I don't like pc controls and don't know anybody that actually plays pc games, there really is no reason for me to switch over.

spdarksky2823d ago

NOTE:I played all consoles plus high end pc.

"About graphics, well I'm sure that PC's CAN do graphics unbelievably better than consoles, but they aren't. The only thing that outclasses the graphics of Uncharted 2 on the pc is Crysis. Where are all these other amazing looking games you pc users speak of? All I hear are specs."

Stop being a jerk and says that PC CAN do but only Crysis is better looking than Uncharted. HUH? Hey take Bioshock DX9/DX10 and compare to 360/PS3 Bioshock. Take all multiplat games and compare it to PC on LED/LCD TV and see which one looks better. Stupid Comparison.

Apotheosize2823d ago

No system wars, but PC gaming will never cease to exist.

Exactly. Unified consoles will cease to exist long before PC gaming dies as a whole.
