Portable Gamer: To fully understand what was great about the original Monkey Island series, it necessary to jump into a time machine aimed at the early to mid 1990’s. At the time, LucasArts was one of the top names in the PC game world and in many eyes, could do no wrong. Really, how could they fail when they had the three headed game development juggernaut of Ron Gilbert, Tim Schaffer and Dave Grossman in their bullpen? But as is the case with all good things, they had to eventually come to an end, with Monkey Island 2 marking the last time that the holy trinity of adventure game designers would unite under the same banner. With a stellar pedigree, the game has been treated as sacred by adventure game fans, so can the recent portable revival even remotely approach the quality of its original’s subject matter?
