Good read and story chronicling Nintendo.

Joule2625d ago

Maybe it did that by being the cheapest console on the market?

SilentNegotiator2625d ago

*Looks at history of best selling consoles*

Pretty much.

Misterhbk2625d ago (Edited 2625d ago )

Nintendo did it with a great game plan. Their console is terrible in my own opinion simply because of all the shovelware, but their strategy was executed perfectly.

They were able to make it seem as if they had this whole new technology that would revolutionize everything about gaming and to top it off you could get it for much less their either of their opponents consoles. What's that you say? New tech? and it's cheap?

People ate it up obviously. Good job this gen nintendo. Lets see if they can keep this up with their next console iteration.

Seijoru2625d ago

Sounds like what MS is trying to emulate with Kinect.

sashimi2625d ago (Edited 2625d ago )

Except Kinect isn't cheap and it's an addon instead of a stand alone console and cost almost as much as the Wii with games retailing at $60 with no existing franchise like Nintendo does to push early sales.

JIronMan2625d ago

next gen will be a challenge.....

chrisgay2624d ago

I think its unfair to write off the Wii because of all the shovelware- there are still a ton of great games, regardless of how many bad games there are.

DarkFantasy2624d ago (Edited 2624d ago )

"Nintendo did it with a great game plan. Their console is terrible in my own opinion simply because of all the shovelware,"

Nintendo has some quality games like Monster hunter tri(bad ass game),super smash bros brawl, super Mario galaxy 1&2,harvest moon, rune factory,NSMB,metroid,Zelda,No more hero's,Red Steel 2,Punch-Out,MadWorld,Mario Kart,Super Paper Mario,FF games and others just because its not HD dose not mean it sucks the ps2 didn't suck cause it wasn't HD if your foolish enough to buy shovelware then thats your problem,Nintendo has some of the best games to offer just like MS and Sony do.. there's more to gaming then HD graphics.

BarbWire2624d ago

wii isn't terrible itself, it's the 3rd parties' falt.

they took risks = true way to success!!

thats why Sony went from 2nd to 1st to 3rd:
PS3 was a BIG risk, and it backfired at the start

as we say in portuguese "Quem não arrisca não petisca"
as in
If you don't take risks in life you don't get anywhere =) sometimes the risk fails, and you suffer

but when it succeeds...OH how it succeeds!

DNAbro2624d ago

Well sony's risk with the ps3 is now paying off. Nintendo's risk just payed off from the begining.

GeorgeAnimal2624d ago

The biggest risktakers are oftentimes the biggest success stories except for when they fail misserably like you said.

ULTIMATE_REVENGE2625d ago

"back to 1st"

one word "casuals"

AaronPal8112625d ago

One more word: elderly

In all honesty though it really has been a platform that has expanded the industry and those "casuals" will probably one day become hardcore.

Stryfeno22625d ago (Edited 2625d ago )

On more extra word "Nintendo"

Never count the big N out...They have been doing it to long.

duplissi2625d ago (Edited 2625d ago )

naw. they were desperate and had to try something drastic. without the gameboy (selling alot consistantly and keeping them afloat), and then the success of the ds(i think it really validated the move to the wii as both are similar in concept) i dont think things would be where they are. in fact i imagine they would have a bit more in common with sega.

kesvalk2624d ago

same can be said for sony and MS this gen, without their other products, they would have closed doors...

the only things that kept them from doing so was other products they sell, like windows and office for MS and all the TVs and microsystems for Sony...

eagle212625d ago

That's how far ahead of the pack Nintendo is in consoles. In handhelds? Try 70 million.

Not 10 million, not 20 million, but 30 million. And throw another 6 million on top if you are really feeling like a hurt fanboy. :)

sashimi2625d ago (Edited 2625d ago )

Well Nintendo has always dominated the handheld market and Sony is the first to even get some of that market and expand it.Nintendo does dominate the console sales though.Never count Nintendo out since they have some of the most popular franchises in gaming.

AaronPal8112625d ago

The casual gamer will eventually become the hardcore gamer I think.

ULTIMATE_REVENGE2625d ago (Edited 2625d ago )

That's not a good thing, they should stay casual :)

AaronPal8112625d ago

Gamers like you and me probably entered in an age where Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter II, or Tomb Raider were the games of the day so we were instandly "hardcore".

If you're a kid growing up now you honestly have Wii and DS titles that are both for the hardcore basically newer versions of Mario, Zelda, etc. with a mixture of casual like Wii Fit, Sports and so on.

They'll evolve into hardcore gamers with a liking for casual stuff as well. I think it's a good thing.

Biggest2625d ago

That isn't what is happening with the Wii. The casual players are staying casual. Certain games sell well. Everything else doesn't. The main "doesn't" games are what we consider core games. But it is what it is. No skin off my back that Nintendo is making money again. Maybe they'll find a way to go back to their roots and produce new products. I think they're out of ideas for actual games and dip into the old well one too many times. I would LOVE for them to prove my thoughts wrong. They tried with games like Mad World and No More Heroes. But the owners of the Wii care more about virtual dogs and Mario's multiple parties. I hope they find a new idea and stick to it through the casual's slow acceptance.

DNAbro2624d ago

@Biggest

Actually yes they are, maybe not the adults but you can sure bet a lot of the kids will be. Most kids first game is something like mario may lead up to other games as they get older.

Anthonynoonz2625d ago

i don't think that nintendo could ever truly fall out of the videogame industry nor go being just a 3rd party.

TheLastGuardian2625d ago

It's more like they went from 1st to 2nd to 3rd then to 1st. They're only 1st this generation in terms of sales. 2nd in terms of games.

PlayerX2625d ago

Mario Galaxy 1&2 are the highest rated games this gen so I think they are first all around.

Biggest2625d ago

Two games out of 1000 hardly makes for a winner.

Seferoth752624d ago

Games is just an excuse from Sony fanboys who cant admit Sony isnt first any more. They had to come up with a category and think if they say it enough the rest of the world will adopt some new bias method for finding the winner of each console generation.

Ask these same fanboys who won last gen and why. When you look into their own reasoning, you'll find that the hundreds of casual titles on PS2 last gen mean it didnt win and instead the Xbox or GC did because both had a higher percentage of good games to bad games.

JeromeRichfield2625d ago

Nintendo is going to stay #1 for a long time thanks to 3DS.

Britney Spears2625d ago

yea but they were doing great with gba even when they weren't doing so hot in the consoles with n64 and gc during that time. Different markets.
